Since being stood-up in 2017, Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFABs) have provided the U.S. Army with unique capabilities and immense flexibility.
In this interview-driven film, we examine the SFAB mission, hear what life is like as an advisor, and explore the challenges SFABs will face in the future. The film features Major General Donn H. Hill, the Commanding General at Security Force Assistance Command (SFAC), as well as Lieutenant General (Ret.) Michael Lundy and other leaders from SFAC and the SFABs.
Among other topics, these leaders discuss how SFABs strengthen our allies and partner forces while supporting U.S. security objectives.

At first the security force assistance brigade had a green beret but for obvious reasons they changed it to brown

People said the same thing about SF after Vietnam. The Security Force Assistance mission is only growing in demand. I can only speak on Africa, but each year more and more countries are requesting SFAB Advisors to come and work with their military. I doubt we're going anywhere anytime soon.

Its telling when you have the surgeon talking about berets and they don't have any lower enlisted "Advisors" talking about what they do. These guys are essentially OC's (like 1st Army) except for foreign militaries. They won't be the first ones in or see combat. What they've devolved into is a group of senior leaders who have nothing better to do than micro manage and have their "highly skilled and trained Advisors" preform skill level 1 tasks

The SFAB concept actually makes sense. SF should be linking up and leading local "partisans" in actual direct action combat operations, not just training them.

CSM Chris Gunn was the first BSM for the SFABs former Ranger. He was the epitome of the professional noncommissioned officer. I’m not sure what became of him but, if he was able to impart any of himself into this organization, they will do great things.

Question. Im about to graduate college with a bachelor in political science this upcoming fall of 2024 and im bilingual and i would like to join the SFAB. How do i join? Can i still go through OCS and apply for SFAB or do i have to go enlisted ?

SF lite. They needed more FID teams during the GWOT because the ODAs (that normally do FID) were doing DA missions. Now that we aren't in war we will see it fizzle out.

SFABs are part of a U.S. Army security force assistance (SFA) triad which also includes U.S. Army Special Forces and and the National Guard State Partnership programs. All three contribute to SFA with their own unique focus areas.

Generally none, but in my personal experience we usually have an interpreter if needed. Whether that's through an English speaker from the unit we're training, or something else coordinated with the embassy

I get it but why try and make the comparison to SOF or even bring them up like they're trying to compete but "not compete " with SOF? Their mission set sounds like glorified middle school teachers to some and elementary school to others nations. They're not ever going to become MAC-V. Also some of the speakers are a turn off to the program to me.

It's a complimentary roll to the SOF mission set, not the same mission set. And it gets brought up because people still have a misconception about SFABs and their relationship to SOF.

Not at all. SFAB has a different mission that frees SF to do its primary/higher mission -- linking with and leading local partisans in direct action combat operations.

I actively saw the Chinese and Russians "competing" with us in the exact context we work in while in Africa. It's called competition "phase" for a reason. It's a spectrum of warfare so to speak. Don't get so hung up on a doctrinal term

That might have been some people's mentality in 2018-2019 when the Brigades were being stood up. But not a single person I've worked with since being in the unit in 2022 acts or thinks we're SF or SOF. People talk a lot of shit about something they clearly don't understand or know enough about.
