I used to take my puppy to the fairground area near my house. It’s a small fairground so no crazy rides and things like most fairgrounds but whenever a new fair came around, normally every week, so she would be exposed to all kinds of different things. Maybe a renaissance fair or a farmers market was held there one day and then the next week a livestock and trade show appears. It gave me so many opportunities to expose my puppy to different people, things, and environments. It’s was great!

i have found with my dog that working on pulling first works best. he is very smart and if he gets away with pulling even once then it wont ever stop. pulling first, ground scents later.
@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 4 года назад
That's great advice! In my opinion dogs should be allowed to sniff on most walks. Sometimes it can be hard to stop a puppy from pulling. For example, we don't have a fenced in yard so our puppy was outside on a leash from day one. We also have a lot of different people walking her, and I cannot get them all to follow no-pulling rules (sigh!). We are not super strict about pulling when she has her harness on, but use a flat collar for proper leash training (with people that will not let her pull), so now she knows to walk nicely with the collar but when we use her harness she can do more of the stuff she loves.

@@zeno9580 Good luck to you, I have no easy answers. I think all the trainers out there give good suggestions. But the most important thing is how you structure the free time. My dog turned one yesterday and he is so good at his training he used to never listen when we said sit or down etc. aka he was very stubborn although he was a lab he knew every command just didn’t do it but now we say the command once and he does it. Also I recommend a gentle leader so interia doesn’t pull when on walks.
@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 4 года назад
The gentle leader is a great tool if you're in a situation where your dog might pull despite being trained not to, but it's not really teaching the dog not to pull when you take it off. Using a tool that pulls your dogs' head to the side on every walk can cause them to use their bodies wrong, especially when they are still young, so you still need to train your dog to walk to heel instead of trying to go forward and being stopped by the gentle leader turning their head to the side. I have a front-clip option on my dog's harness that I use if we are around lots of people and she gets too exited. It works great to stop her from pulling and walk nicely through a crowd, but her body stays kinda crooked and she does not use her front legs freely, so I switch back to using the clip on her back as soon as possible. In short, using a gentle leader can be a good option (although maybe not all of the time), but pay attention to how your dog uses their body when they wear it and don't forget to also teach proper leash walking on a flat collar or a standard harness.
@Kai-ef2rm
@Kai-ef2rm 4 года назад
as a way to minimise pulling I recommend a 'front leading harness' Its is a gentle harness and doesn't hurt the dog. The results are magical at least for me and my dog as it stops the dog from pulling you forwards they feel the lead on their side.
@faithm.4084
@faithm.4084 4 года назад
Bumble Bee in a way it does actually hurt the dog, and I would never ever use one especially on a puppy because, yes it works in a way that minimizes pulling, but could cause deformities in the dog because it causes the stride of the dog to be abnormal (since it is so close to the the dogs shoulders that the dog can’t walk normally) therefore the dog walks slower which equals less pulling but because it causes unusual movement in the dog, the harness could cause detrimental harm to the front legs in the long run

I just read several extremely critical comments. Maybe I usually just surf past that stuff, or maybe the trolls are out in force. One way or another, I find the nonsense extremely irritating. Inertia is a FIVE-FREAKING-MONTH-OLD DOG that already possesses serious obedience and trick-dog skills - and otherwise behaves like an utterly normal, VERY well-socialized Border of her age. There's more than one way to train a dog - but if you have really, actually been watching Zack work with Inertia and think he doesn't know what he's doing you're just ... I honestly don't know what you are. Note 1: Is she a little high-strong? No duh! What, did think you were watching a video about a senile basset hound?? She's a pre-adolescent WORKING-LINE BORDER COLLIE for crying out loud! This dog is absolutely wonderful - the same way a Ferrarari is wonderful: bloody awesome - and a real handful, particularly at this age. When people criticize a celebrity dog trainer (no matter what the training philosophy) by saying, "Let's see how he/she does with an actually challenging dog" - they're basically talking about raising THIS DOG. Note 2: Something that I find particularly commendable about Zack's documentaries is that he goes to considerable lengths to show his dog NOT being perfect but learning to deal with normal canine challenges and developmental issues. Take the two human encounters in this video: It would be unbelievably easy to put the sequence backwards: First show Inertia being reactive around noisy people, then have Mr. Amazing-Balls-Trainer doing something wonderful, then show her being super friendly with some other people. But that's not the way life works - and Zack and Bree are doing us all a huge service by showing us that.

what type of frisbee are you using. Though my dog is good at catching stuff, she is a bit scared of the frisbee and waits for it to fall down.

You’re videos are very helpful. I was wondering if you can give me some advice regarding my rescue dog. When we first adopted our dog, he started out liking both of us. Now he only growls at my boyfriend when he pets him and never listens to any commands my boyfriend gives him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Zak how do you get your dog used to the car? Do you have a video on this? My pup gets so car sick 🤢 i also just got my pup and he’s afraid of everything. He darts away (on the leash) as soon as he hears or sees something scary. Not sure how to handle this

Love all your videos, we have a puppy who is15 weeks old now and Havnt been able to get him to go on a walk yet. I can't get I'm to go out the front door. I did carry him once to take him out but he glued himself to the floor and wouldn't move. Do you have any suggestions

Take some stuff (toys, dog bed, treats, pee pad, water) from inside and put them just outside the door, have your dog on a long leash so he can choose where he wants to be. Sit down outside with the door open and read a book or check your phone, don't call him, and don't give attention to him if he is not showing interest in the door. Calm praise and treats if he looks at, comes closer to, or goes through the door. (Don't try to lure him further out with the treats, throw them inside where he feels safe so he can practice getting closer to the outside many times). If you live in an apartment, tell your neighbors beforehand so they know what's up. When you're able to hang out with your dog a little further from the door, you could also offer a safe place like a crate to go into in case anything scary that is out of your control happens. Just make sure the treats, toys and attention from you happen outside the crate. Keep the sessions fairly short, by taking him in when he starts to enjoy himself you'll keep him wanting more. Make the inside of your home a little more boring than the outside. If possible, feed all meals close to the door or outside. Your dog has more or less passed his early socialization stage, which means you'll have to work very hard to make him have positive associations with everything he encounters outside. All of his food should be used for training, put away his food bowl. As soon as there is a sound, sight or smell that you think might be new to him, give him calm praise and treats. Repeat this enough times that you are sure the dog does not mind the stimuli and then go on to only praise for that stimuli. Do not go too close to scary stuff, looking from a distance is better at first. If you encounter any problems, call a trainer that uses only positive reinforcement methods a.s.a.p.

I am trying so hard to continue to train my Boston terrier puppy. She’s only 1 year old and I guess we obviously dropped the ball on potty training her. We are having major issues with her going to the bathroom in the house. I wish you could come help me lol! I don’t know what else to do but thanks for the videos!

Megan Mixon Bless she is only tiny so I would keep taking her out every hour to potty then she will know she should only go outside it’s what I had to do with 3 puppies and at 4 months old they go to the door now when they want to go out it’s not easy but really worth it praise her big time even with a biscuit when she goes it works.Good luck Megan.💕

Hi Zak, can you give tips on how to eliminate guarding of toys against other dogs? I have 5yo dogie that never exhibited this behavior cuz he grew up with 2 other pups and they used to play keep away and share the toys without any problems. But about a couple of months ago I noticed when he and other dogs play keep away, he gets really defensive against the toy that he will get into his possession. Thanks!

It is generally not advised to keep toys out when dogs are playing together, unless they know each other well and you are sure there won't be a problem. Many dogs are completely fine around toys and other dogs, but some dogs just are not. Throwing balls and sticks is a big no-no unless you ask first. You can train your dog to give their prized possession to you and then put it away to stop a fight breaking out over it. Otherwise it is safer to remove the dog that is trying to get to the toy than to approach a dog that his defending something.
