Cambodia is home to just over 20 ethnic minorities, with the Kreung being one of the country's largest groups. Traditionally, Kreung girls and boys approaching adolescence were given their own private huts outside the family home.

These “Bride and Groom huts” - often incorrectly referred to as “love huts”- gave teenagers a chance to live independently and experiment with premarital sex without judgment or social stigma. Now, as a result of mobile technology, there is no need for young people to stay overnight in personal huts, as they may have done in previous generations. Cell phones are making it faster and simpler to communicate with potential love interests, which is changing the dynamics of dating. Filmmaker Charlotte Pert shares one young couple's story in this fascinating short about the evolution of courtship in Cambodia.

I don't know if this tradition is unique to this particular ethnic group or culture but basically, traditional Kreung houses don't provide a lot of privacy, so when a daughter be comes a teenager, she would tell her father that she would like to start dating. He would then find a place that's reasonable distance from their house and build a hut there so that his daughter would have privacy when she meets with her boyfriend.

The most alarming thing was when the girl said they use the phones so they won't miss each other. I think that is a crucial part of relationships. If you dont have a chance to miss your partner then will you ever truly live them? I believe in the old saying "Absence makes the heart grow fonder". Back in the day a husband and wife had to wait till dinner to fill the other person in on their day. Now if I dont text my gf constantly all day with a play by play of my life then I'm a bad boyfriend. I dont want to be in CONSTANT communication with anybody. Smh

Hello! I’m Cambodian but when I watched this video for the first time, I heard the old woman talked and I thought that “ what kind of language is that?? “ and when I heard the lady spoke she kinda took sometime to pronounce the words properly cuz maybe they used Khmer language to only contact when they go to the city. This people called “ Kreung “ ( I live in Cambodia about 14 years right now when I was in my mom’s belly and my parents are originally Cambodian ) I never heard about that group of people before, so today I knew it. They have a really really far traditional, culture, lifestyle, language, etc. from Cambodian that live in city or provinces but they also live in some provinces like Rathanak Kiri, Mondoul Kiri ( only know two of that provinces ) and that group of people live on mountain or like normal. That just my opinions, so this video I learned about “ The Small Group Cambodia 🇰🇭 “

Think of when you met your first crush in person; of how powerful that was. Now imagine just having text, emojis and photos. Not even close to the same. Texting your buddy is one thing, but meeting that special someone in person and seeing all the visual signs that they really like you too, taking them by the hand and holding them and knowing them in person should not be traded for all the text conversations in the world if you can help it. It's sad to think of the memories kids are missing out on when they just experience these muted interactions.
@RefinerSimilitude

Inhedonia Hrtz Nothing is evident from your statement other than you took my benign post, written to help those with open minds, personally; it seems to have struck a nerve with you though I can only assume why. I can't help but notice that your avatar appears to be a modded playstation controller. If you have / had a romantic online / digital relationship, I'm not judging you at all. Please do not take my post out of context. Simply put, communication through text / emojis / pictures alone is not as complete or rich as it can be. At best, it's like reading a novel and letting your imagination fill in the blanks, which is a sad comparison to draw. Wouldn't you rather live a really good novel instead of just reading about it's plot if given the chance? Face your fears and meet the person face to face if you really want to know them.

I'm not going to comment on his concept of reciprocal love but if affordable mobile technology can help these people stay connected in remote villages than it's already a huge step forward. As for traditions being lost due to technology, I think that's debatable and relative: some traditions stand the test of time, others don't, and this applies to all traditions around the world... remember that it was once the tradition in many places of Europe to make food offerings to the gods!

They had cities with millions of residents at a time when London's population was under 30,000 people. Got colonized by the French - colonizers aren't usually too focused on educating the natives - just enslaving them. Then came the communists and then Americans fighting the communists - lots of death and bombing and torture. That usually isn't great for development.

This is probably the most ignorant comment I’ve seen. You couldn’t come up with any scenario at all as to why they can’t be developed like “everyone else.” Consider the history of the country and the government. It’s kinda hard to develop when the government is hoarding all the money. Also, they’re still recovering from a Communist Regime era where every material possessions was completely destroyed.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, with technological advancements, access to education, and medical access the old traditions will cease as new ones take their place, personally I see culture as a something fluid that is constantly changing for better or worse on one hand we don't connect in the same sense as previous generations but previous generations also had things like slavery, child brides, and would be quick dismiss science as witchcraft so I'm all for progress, think about how your great ancestors might have suffered let's say 100 years ago compared to how you live in this society
@7EmpathicBeauty
@7EmpathicBeauty 5 лет назад
@@superscaredcorncutt1202 Quite the contrary. My professor in an evolution class once asked, "what do you think causes the most problems in the world?" Most of the class said, "HUMANS". I agreed. Yes, we progress but nature is not that simplistic. Every step we take forward causes something to go haywire...for instance, social media. On the outskirts, social media brings the world together BUT, at the same time, narcissism, exposure, stupidity, and depression has increased. I don't think it is progression if everything we touch has a consequence (some dire. Some not). The internet seems to be causing more awareness but there are far more negatives that I can think of. With this spreading all through the world, I know laziness will increase but what else comes with it?
