FamilySearch has made some big changes! Many relate to communicating information better to ensure people don't alter or merge someone they shouldn't.
From changes to viewing sources and attaching them to layout options, memories and a new "About tab." But my favorite is FamilySearch's new alert notes! All these changes were announced November 9, 2022.

Great updates. I especially like the urgent note feature. It can be really frustrating when someone new comes in and starts changing your tree around based off limited knowledge they have. Usually hearsay with no sources.

Loved this! It's taking a while to get used to the new person page but I'm starting to like it. Will likely start utilizing the notes tool as I fixed some erroneous relationships.

Thank you for the explanation of the Alert Note. I never would have figured that on my own. And I didn't notice the difference with Memories because it was probably in October when I last submitted photos or scanned documents. Wow. Nice! Thank you for this informative video with all the other explanations.

The old version of the person page will go away sometime early in 2023, there may be the occasional bug where you need to revert briefly over to the old version so send feedback detailing the bug and they will fix it. Had one or two myself, they had them fixed within a week.

My main concern is I wish they would have kept the Brief Life Stories at the top of the page instead of moving them to the bottom. I know I can move it for myself. The main issue is that new people may not know to look at the bottom for that info. The Brief Life Story is also a way for people that are new to researching, or even new to Family Search to determine if that is their person or not. With it being at the top before it was right there when someone clicked on the profile so they could easily see it. Otherwise, I like the changes too.

Good point!

I did want to add that they are trying to move people away from putting “notes” into the brief life history and have it be truly the history. They are wanting to use the notes and alerts function instead as they think that will be more effective in communication. I do agree with FamilySearch on that one.

Hello! Thank you for your video! One change that I heard about at Toots Tech was the ability to share a living person's tree, did I understand that correctly? If so how might one do that?😊
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Год назад
I heard that talk. They mentioned it is in the works. They haven’t released that at this point (March 2023). But that will be cool. The issue is privacy for those in the living tree.

great tutorial, I find fs, a little complicated in some instances. I'm getting used to the new person page layout. Still find it confusing to add a source to a person, etc. will see if you have video on that next. Thank you

I use Family Search to look up records, but I do not have my tree on it, because of the Collaborative nature, I have so many errors in the tree, and one tree with so many errors. If I put the correct data, then someone can come along and say it is wrong and change it. One example is David Prothero's wife Mary, every tree I've seen has her maiden name as Williams because of the 1851 Wales Census it has her mother as Elizabeth Williams, I was not convinced of this because the only marriage record I could find was for David Prothero and Mary Lewis, right place, right time (1826 Abergavenny, Wales), so I thought her mother had re-married. I also noticed that the trees also stated Elizabeth died in 1862, so I went to GRO website and found an Elizabeth Williams who died in 1962 and looked like it might be the right one, so I ordered the pdf fromt he GRO and it stated Elizabeth was the widow of David Williams, so I looked for a marriage record for David Williams and Elizabeth (these digital images were from FMP) and found a marriage record of David Williams, widower and Elizabeth Lewis, widow who married in 1834. Then thought this may not be enough proof for some people, so my next thought was, they had a couple of children born after 1837, so the youngest Henry was born in 1842, and ordered the pdf from the GRO it stated his parents were David Prothero and Mary Prothero formerly Lewis, so this is positively proves that Mary's maiden name is Lewis. On the same vain, every one says Jonathan Prothero's wife Margaret died in 1906, I ordered the Pdf and found this was not our Margaret, is one was married to Walter Prothero, then thought maybe she re-married and found an Aug 1891 Marriage record for her where she married Isaac Davies. I haven't been able to find either Margaret or Isaac on the 1901 Wales Census, so they could have died in the interim, but their are so many on the GRO in that time frame, haven't been able to narrow it down, I have also tried to find an obituary, but haven't found anything yet, the search goes on. These are just two examples I have found.

Great research! I really like the opportunity to add the note that is highlighted in a way others will see it better at the top of the page. It's a shame to not share all you have gleaned!

Aimee, can you tell me if you can trace your ancestors back to the home country, if so, about how many % of your ancestors can be traced so far.?
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Год назад
I’m not sure %. Of my great grandparents 5 of the lines are all back. Two are early Americans and those lines are more complicated because they spread so much. Many of those are back but not all. I have one great grandfather that is a brick wall. His parents are a mystery. YDNA and autosomal DNA haven’t solved it yet but I think in time I’ll get that figured out. He’s a character. This question makes me want to work on my own stuff again! To be honest, In the last 10 years I rarely get time for my stuff. I’ve been working on everyone else’s! Looking over my tree to answer this has been good! It has lit a fire under me!! Thanks!

@@AncestryAimee I'm glad to hear i inspired you! We have brick walls too, i guess they appear for all. the most common is if the mother was unwed when she had a child, the vicar never wrote the fathers name. I suppose you don't have any swedish ancestors? They came mostly to America after 1850. We have a tv show, where people with wrong, or unknown fathers discovered through DNA, get help finding them, they only use church records and DNA. Here we have parish genealogies in book form, ans some on CD, i find they helpful, since the further back in time you get, yes it get more complicated, getting and reading records.

I don’t have Swedish ancestors. I’ve got Swiss though. That’s good to know about Swedish records. Yeah my guy may be illegitimate. He also wasn’t honest and consistent on records. That’s the line I’ve been working on through DNA lately since traditional genealogy wasn’t getting us there. It’ll happen someday! Since I went pro I really have neglected my stuff. But I’ve learned so much in the last decade. I really work to be constantly learning for my clients. I need to apply it to my research now. Thanks!!
