When your seedlings block the light to other plants it's time to transplant them to seedling flats or seedling trays. Doing so also stimulates root and stem growth which will pay off with a plant that can take up more nutrients and water, withstand disease and pests and product more fruit.

I'm so jelly over those beans. My bush beans haven't sprouted yet, but I've started them in the beds using the SFG system, even with the row covers on it hasn't reached warm enough temperatures. Totally switching to the Mittleider at my next home. Your results are just way better than anyone else I'm seeing on RU-vid.

***** Thank you. I have heard many others tell the same tale with their results from SFG. I felt I approached all gardening methods with an open and inquisitive mind. The one that works best for me is the Mittleider method.

I'm curious. Could you use vermiculite instead of the pearlite?

So the Nitrogen is never added except when they go in the ground?
@LDSPrepper
@LDSPrepper 8 лет назад
+steve mulherin Nitrogen is added whenever the plants show they need it and when they are transplanted.

I would love to see how you transplant the beets to the beds when they are ready. Usually a very fragile seedling.

How much does all that stuff cost?
@LDSPrepper
@LDSPrepper 9 лет назад
BUDDY LIGHT Much, much less than what the average gardener spends on plastic pots, fertilizers, expensive potting mixes and reduced productivity. The soil mixture for an 18"x18" flat costs about $0.02. The flat about $2.00 (it lasts decades not months). The fertilizer is fractions of a penny. I added up my fertilizer cost to grow a pound of tomatoes. It was less than $0.02 per lbs.

I really like your seed trays. How well does that soiless mix retain water? In other words, does it dry out quickly? How often do you have to water the trays?

Why not just plant the seeds that far apart and not have to transplant seedlings to another flat?
@LDSPrepper
@LDSPrepper 9 лет назад
davjan4 It saves on space, soil, water, nutrients. I can get a lot more seeds to germinate on the heat mat and get a strong start under the grow lights. It allows me to "shock" them or promote root growth when I transplant. It allows me to plant them deeper in the soil to give the plant more support. Basically all the reasons commercial growers transplant this way.

does transplanting into the holes along the outside close to the edge of the box, does it crowd the roots or does it not seem to impact them?

The light that you use, how many watts does it consume?
@LDSPrepper

Jorge Pontes I can run 2, 4 or 6 lights. Each light is 35 watts.

When do you bump up cucumbers? They are 4" tall and have first true leaves now. Time to bump to bigger pots?

I have a love of growing things, but have also become disenchanted with the organic movement, because even in it I have had to use "organic" pesticides, that are harmful to bees. I have watched almost every video you have on your channel and am intrigued with the Mittlieder method, no pesticides! I am planning to make a shift toward this system for the next season. It seems like you have to extra prepared, something that does not bother me, in this method. I am on a very strict budget, and know I will be able to order my book and fertilizer in two months. I need to plan now for seeds, I have many in my bank, but there are some I would buy locally in February, March, and April. If I am going sprout everything like you are doing I need many before my local supplier will have them. Do you have any suggestion for quality seeds that won't break the bank? I don't mind bulk, I'll freeze for the future, but it seems like most seed companies what you to use a retailer.

Is this organic if you use fertilizer?
@alchemicalanarchist
@alchemicalanarchist 8 лет назад
Technically Mittleider isnt organic, but it does use all natural Mineral and Elemental Fertilizers. So it kinda falls somewhere in the middle between organic and chemically grown crops. I think of it as a Hybrid way to grow. Its sort of like doing a Passive Hydro system.

Do you use supersoil or chemical synthetic ferts? If so, it's all for money, not for health. GMOs are more harmful than anything. Much love for your videos though on the process.
