Another great video! I bought the Mittleider Gardening Library on cd a few weeks ago, and am looking forward to studying the material and incorporating the principles of the method into my gardening this year. Thanks for the great info.

I had started using the plastic seedling trays, but decided to build the seedling trays instead. Good choice! Very quick, easy project. I threw out the plastic trays because you're right, they're flimsy and break quickly. I modified the seedling trays, though, to fit my homemade PVC grow light stand -- the boxes are 12"x24" -- because I don't have an in-garden greenhouse, so I'm growing them indoors. But that's one of my first spring gardening projects. Looking forward to this gardening year. Thanks!

Awesome! I'm glad to hear you like the wood trays you built. They will last for years and you won't have to worry about them breaking like plastic trays and dropping all your plants.

We are enjoying wind chills way, way, way below zero. You gave me hope that spring is coming but we don't dare start planting outside until at least June...but since a long hard winter is predicted, It might be after June 1st. Another Michigan you tuber said we have not had this much cold and snow in a long time. We are expecting more tomorrow and the schools are closed for the third day in a row because it would endanger children to go out in this wind chill. This started just before Christmas and It continues....I might have to do some winter gardening this summer! Been reading up on it, lol.

Another great video! I just love the look of your wood seed starter and table. I agree starting from seeds are so much better and rewarding. I enjoy giving away extra plants. I'm starting my seeds in plastic mini greenhouse inside a 6x6 greenhouse. Its warm and dry so I have to keep a bucket of water inside the greenhouse. First time having a greenhouse. So. Cal.

I AM A BEGINNER IN REGARD TO ANY SYSTEMATIC GARDENING. THOUGHT IT IS A HEALTHY AND USEFUL RETIREMENT PASTIME. OUR FRIEND MR. PEP HAS ALREADY SET UP SOME SEEDLING SYSTEM SIMILAR TO THIS, IN OUR YARD, AND AM GLAD THAT LDSPEPPER CAN HELP US FURTHER IN THIS GENIAL ADVENTURE!!

The MitL method may very well be one of the most productive, but considering you're into prepping, wouldn't a method not depending on external minerals, fertilizer, and sawdust be preferable somewhat? If you have a video answering this I'd gladly watch it. Thx.

I don't know why I resist. As you may recall I tested a somewhat modified Mittleider garden last year against a standard Square Foot Garden and the MGM far outperformed the SFG. This year I'm moving more towards MGM, but find it hard to completely abandon the SFG method (I've gardened this way since Mel Bartholomew's original PBS TV series in the early 1980's). But I continuously have spotty seed starting success. And while I just built the seedling trays, I'm using more Mel's Mix than MGM sawdust/sand. I haven't had my seeds sprout yet and am thinking of starting a new batch with sawdust/sand just to once again compare the two. Do you think going to Home Depot and asking for their sawdust from the chop saw and panel saw they use to cut down customer boards would be a good idea?

Great advice, I steer clear of any GMO seeds! Don't know if I will grow a garden this year unless we get snow the next two months. Will have to conserve water as our reservoir is critically low after 3 drought winters!

You don't have to worry about steering clear of GMO seeds. You can't buy them.

LDSPrepper I have called Gurney's and a couple of others and all they tell me is they don't knowingly sell GMO seeds. That is not a good enough answer for me! I buy all organic and heirloom.. I save what seeds I can. I have a whole shelf in my freezer that are heirloom. If you have information that these places do not sell GMO I would love yo read it. Thanks

1994abbygirl It wasn't so much that I was worried about buying GMO seeds myself (tho it was in the back of my mind), but rather I wanted heirloom seeds so that I could start seed saving and know that what I saved would grow again the following year. So this year I went all heirloom seeds. I bought mine from Terroir Seeds and High Mowing Organic Seeds. They're about $1 or so more than the pack you might buy from a big box store, but I'm happy knowing they're heirloom AND I'm supporting small businesses

It is also called 200 PSI PVC. Check Home Depot.

The only time I do seeds is when I can plant them outside in the garden. Every time I do it inside so I can transplant, they come out stringy and leggy, even if I use a grow light just an inch or two from the plants.

So do ours. It is because even with 16 hours of grow lights it isn't enough light. If you do them inside take them outside as often as you can when it is warm. They will not get leggy. And don't forget to prune the leaves twice before you transplant them to the ground. This will shock the plant and make it stockier.
