Here is a list of fall crops that can be planted during October in Florida.
Cool Season Crops:
• Arugula
• Beets
• Broccoli
• Brussels Sprouts
• Cabbage
• Carrots (Direct Sow)
• Cauliflower
• Celery
• Collards
• Endive/Escarole
• Kale
• Kohlrabi
• Lettuce
• Mustard
• Onions & Shallots (Direct Sow)
• Radish (Direct Sow)
• Spinach
• Strawberry (Bare Roots or Plugs)
• Swiss Chard
• Turnips (Direct Sow)
Herbs:
• Basil
• Cilantro/Coriander
• Chives
• Dill
• Fennel
• Lemon Balm
• Sage
• Thyme
I use 30% - 40% shade cloth to temporarily shade my seedlings until the weather cools enough for them to be in full sun. Shade cloth can be found here: amzn.to/3C2z35a
Row Cover (This is a multipurpose plant covering that can protect plants from insects, provide some cold protection in winter, and can also provide a small amount of shade): amzn.to/3nreXh5
Here are links for many of the products I use in my vegetable garden. Note that a lot of these items, like the fertilizers and the trays/saucers, have gotten much more expensive lately (like everything else). I shop around to find the best prices on the items and if I can't find something at a reasonable price then I will just do without or find a substitute):
7 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/2XaJ1mp
5 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/3ht2wNP
10 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/3k4WpkB
14 Inch Diameter Grow Bag Trays/Saucers: amzn.to/3tAkzqc
16 Inch Diameter Grow Bag Trays/Saucers: amzn.to/3AiP724
Sustane Organic Fertilizer (4-6-4) 20 lb Bag: amzn.to/3lztPHJ
or
Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer (4-4-4): amzn.to/3EdxeV2
or
Espoma Organic Fertilizer (3-4-4): amzn.to/3EbvJ9P
For Berries: Espoma Berry-tone Organic Fertilizer (4-3-4): amzn.to/3jlD8dA
In addition to the above fertilizers I occasionally use these seaweed and fish fertilizers to give my plants a boost of nutrients. I also use some of the seaweed fertilizer (half-strength) on my seedlings right after I transplant them (Note: I don’t use fertilizers with fish in them for seedlings):
Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Powder): amzn.to/3uWO9ak
Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Liquid): amzn.to/37uA0JJ
Neptune's Harvest Tomato & Veg Fertilizer 2-4-2 (Note: this formula is best for first few weeks of plant growth, as it encourages lots of green leafy growth. For fruiting/flowering plants, I switch to the Rose & Flowering formula after the first few weeks. Also, this contains fish and the smell attracts animals, which will dig up the plants trying to find the source of the fish smell, so I use it early in day and water it in just before dark to minimize the smell). amzn.to/3r8OJ40
Neptune's Harvest Rose & Flowering Formula 2-6-4 (Note: this formula is best for later stages of plant growth to encourage more flowers and fruit to grow. This formula also contains fish so everything I said above about attracting animals applies to this formula too). amzn.to/3KqBino
The Following Organic Soil Amendments Add Trace Minerals To The Soil.
Green Sand (Organic Soil Amendment Adds Trace Minerals): amzn.to/3z5uG7B
Kelp Meal (Organic Soil Amendment Adds Trace Minerals): amzn.to/3tz2lFH
Dolomite Lime: amzn.to/3CbclIl
Self-Watering Grow Boxes:
Patio Pickers: amzn.to/3vrhHhW
or
Earthbox: amzn.to/39VfsaX
Drip Irrigation: amzn.to/3uzbhuV

I’m in Northwest Florida in Pensacola right on the border between zones 8b and 9a. There was a silver lining to Hurricane Sally back in 2020 as it took out two massive oak trees in my backyard, at only the cost of my deck and fence, but now I have enough sun to grow some vegetables. As you know, Florida weather often has a personality disorder and can’t decide if it wants to be summer or winter. It’s the middle of October, and our temps have been between the high 80s and sometimes the 70s during the day, but have gotten as low as the 50s during the night. Generally night time temps are in the 60s which is great for some of the fall crops, but I have tomatoes blooming that I started back in August. I have bush cucumbers that are growing nicely, but I don’t think they’re going to make it before it gets too cool. I’ve transplanted tons of cool weather crops, cabbage, collards, lettuce, and have Brussels sprouts and short day onions about ready to transplant. I direct sowed turnips, mustard, rutabaga, radish, carrots, and beets. My beet seeds were five years old, and I took a chance and planted them in a 4’ x 4’ section of raised bed, and it seems as if every one sprouted. After several weeks of watering and watching them, I was about to give up on my carrots, but I’m starting to see some sprouts. I’ve got about 225 sq. ft. of raised beds, and all the beds are just about full. I found a source of free horse manure that’s not too far from home, and I’m headed there today to load up my truck and fill my compost pile. That will top off the beds in the spring. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Wow! Your garden sounds awesome! Someone else in NW Florida just posted that there's a freeze warning up in their region for Wednesday night. I hope your cucumbers and tomatoes will be ok. Sounds like you've put in a lot of hard work. I hope you get to enjoy many bountiful harvests this fall and winter. :)

@@floridavegetablegardening thank you! I have definitely gotten the gardening bug. You know you’ve got it bad when you’re super excited about finding free horse manure 😜. I don’t think it will freeze in my area, but we’ll have lows in the 40s for the next couple of days then a return to lows in the 60s with 80s during the day. Hopefully it will stay warm long enough to get some tomatoes. I just noticed my first tiny green tomato today. The cucumbers have blooms but I don’t they’ll make before it gets too cool. It was worth a shot. All the lettuce, cabbage, collards and greens are loving it though. The great thing about cool weather is the bugs are not as bad. I’m enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I find your videos so helpful in understanding when it's the right time for planting! Thank you so much for the time and work you put in to help other new gardeners to Florida. While 30 years experience helps with the pest & diseases, it doesn't help at all with understanding the planting times or conditions down here 😆

Hi there I'm in 10 a FL and planted tomatoes, eggplant, peppers from seeds about a week ago. You are right about the zones. I usually research each veggie seeds for my zone and don't rely on package. Thank you again.

Where do you get your seeds/plants from? I’m in Kissimmee.
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
I start all of my plants from seeds that I buy online. Most of the seeds used for the plants in this video are from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Some of them were also from the website heirloomseeds.com, but sadly, it appears to be gone now. I also get a lot of my seeds from Seed Savers Exchange and Johnny’s Seeds.

It looks like most of Lake City is in 8b, but parts of it might be 9a. You can zoom in on this map and find your neighborhood to see which zone it's in: www.plantmaps.com/interactive-florida-2012-usda-plant-zone-hardiness-map.php You should be able to plant any of the cool season crops and herbs listed in the video (They are listed in the description under the video as well). Happy Planting! :)

What's your opinion on using Walmart seeds?
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening 2 года назад
I've never seen Walmart's seed collection and haven't bought seeds from there before, but I looked online for what seeds Walmart sells, and it looks like they are mostly selling Burpee and Ferry Morse brand seeds. Are those the brands your Walmart is selling? If so, then they should be fine to use. Those are both reputable brands and are some of the same things you would find at Home Depot and other retailers. The prices look pretty good too. I would just check the dates on the packages to make sure they aren't super old, but I would think they should be good. I hope that helps.
