If angels come from heaven, what is “heaven”? “Heaven” can mean at least five different (but related) things: 1. A human state of mind, intense joy. (“Oh, I’m in heaven!”) This “heaven” can mean anything you want-chocolates, for instance. If heaven is only a state of mind, it isn’t any more objectively real than Santa Claus. Angels don’t come from this heaven, from your mind, like Santa Claus. They aren’t myths or metaphors. They are real. 2. The sky, the firmament, what you see outdoors when you look up. No one thinks angels are birds, so this is not the “heaven” angels come from. 3. Outer space. But angels are not material creatures from other planets in outer space. They don’t come in flying saucers. 4. The “place” beyond outer space where God lives, the place you hope to go to after you die, the alternative to hell. This is the place orthodox Christians, Jews, and Muslims believe God, angels, and saints (saved souls) inhabit. This is a real place, but not a material space somewhere in the universe. You can’t get to heaven in a rocket ship. 5. The very inner life of God, God’s mind. This “heaven” is proper to God alone, but Christians believe God-incredibly-has chosen to share it with men through Christ the God-Man, who has both human life and divine life. Thus, if they accept this gift of being adopted into God’s family and becoming Christ’s brothers, men are exalted even above angels! Angels have only angel life, which is superhuman but subdivine. But the blessed, the saved, those humans who go to heaven, have human and divine life, like Christ. They become little Christs-very little Christs, yet very little Christs.
