Episode 4 - Part 1 - This is the Complete Guide to Sega's mode button. Part one covers how the original 3 and 6 button gamepads work, what the mode button does, and why some games have issues with the 6 button controller.
Keltoigael I didn't touch on it in the video, but I purchased this game the day it released (it's the same copy I used for the review). I loved it back then, played for 100s of hours with various friends, and found it quite impressive visually for its day. Sadly, it just didn't hold up well for me. I will always have fond memories of this one though regardless.
I still have my original cart and box as well. My 32X shines as a beacon of pride in my collection. Can you imagine if Sega delayed the Saturn by another year and got someone like SNK to port games to the 32X? We could have had really close to arcade ports of some really great games. The 32X version of MK II is still my favorite version to play. Almost Arcade perfect port. No loading screens.
Keltoigael good to hear, I love the 32X and will eventually have a video review for every game on the system. . I love the Saturn, but it breaks my heart that North America lost out on so many games due in part to rushing games and hardware out before they were finished. We also missed out on a number of exclusive 32X games that were in development when Sega gave up on the system.
Researching for my upcoming podcast episode on Golden Axe 2, which cannot be controlled properly with a 6-button controller unless the mode button is held down on startup. Had a Genesis my whole childhood and never knew what this button was for! Thanks for explaining!
Simply brilliant! And to think, back in the day I had no idea so much thought went into my Genesis controller. I just thought it was neat the system could whether or not the second controller was connected. Keep up the great work! Subscribed!
1:16 The 3DO was not compatible with Sega and Atari even though they used the same physical plugs. Also, you must not connect a Sega 16-bit controller to a Commodore 8-bit machine because it can hurt the machine.
@@Jenovi After staring the Genesis with the mode held in, it's working perfectly. Before both the jump and the turning around simply didn't work, I was about to return the retro-bit controller, But this is a fix, Thanks! this made a world of a difference.
I'd like to see videos examining how the Sega & EA multi-taps work. I'd especially like to see a breakdown of how the Codemasters' J-carts worked. After dissecting the J-cart, you can see that each port has either a multiplexer or a microprocessor hard wired to the cartridge's PCB.
I’ve been thinking about this too. I still need the EA multi tap and I have a bunch of other projects in the work, but I can see this happening down the road. A future episode of my Sega Formats series will cover the J-Cart, unfortunately my request for an interview with the people involved has gone unanswered.
Jenovi I wanna know why multi taps even existed like why not just make the system have 4 (or more) controller ports to begin with Sony was the last one to put for controller ports on the system and Microsoft made you have one wirless controller if you wanted 4 player because the original 360 only has 3 usb ports
Talk about something that would make an interesting video. I think the most telling example is the Atari 5200. It was the first game console to release with 4 controller ports and was revised later eliminating them in an effort to cut cost. One interesting note is of the 40 or so games (on the Mega Drive) that offer two-player support, around 5 were released in Europe with the extra ports built into the cart itself. In North America we received one of these games.
One of the issues I think of regarding sega genesis 6 button on an older game that you have to use the mode button is Ms Pacman. I know its probably not related here but the new recently released big sega six button wireless controller by retro bit has control issues too. If you play Virtra Racing Genesis issues with the dpad is present. You have to go to 3 button mode to steer car. Just letting you know along with anyone who reads this.
@@Jenovi i really like it. Its the size of the old 3 button but with six and shoulder buttons. If compatibility issues are fixed I think we have a winner here.
I have one of each controller I use on Genplus for the Wii. I like both but I only use arcade sticks for fighting games. Trying to play with anything else is pointless
Wow I always wondered that....I have one with l and r buttons as well....what games ever used those? Haha anyway from now on I'm using that mode button bc I think somehow with my luck I hit jump on the wrong cycle a lot haha now I know why it doesn't work 100% thx!!
+Daniel DeMayo I believe those are programmable to map buttons a b or c to the L and R triggers, or they came pre mapped. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know you found this series useful. It means a lot.
My Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego cartridge for Sega Master System doesn't work with the 6 button controller for Sega Genesis. The player start walking immediately like i was pressing the left on D-Pad. Press the Mode Button don't works too.
I have only used a 3 button controller and the actual shape of the controller looks like it was changed when they went to 6 buttons witch makes it look uncomfertable and small
+CyclonesWorld No one knows for sure, but some common theories all revolve around the idea that add ons were in the work that would fit into this slot. Things such as a rumble pack, wireless adapter, motion control, etc. I personally feel it makes sense, but the controller was never that popular so no expansions were ever developed to take advantage of the slot.
I have very few games that actually support it, which was a bit disappointing. The theory makes sense however, and it's clear how much of an influence it was for the Dreamcast controller. Loving your videos btw, found you randomly, and quickly subscribed!
This has been a few years back. Essentially, there was an issue for a number of videos that did this when processing for upload.. I never knew about it until someone left a comment letting me know. There's maybe 10 like this unfortunately. If I went back, I wouldn't fix them, but redo the video completely. Thankfully, I've really grown paranoid about this kind of issue though some things still slip though the cracks.
There are a few systems for the Mega Drive and they each work a bit different. This means the game has to be programmed around that piece of hardware. My guess is that they go through a lengthy series looking at inputs for each controller individually, meaning only one controller is recognized at a time per port. The game is designed to know set A is controller 1, B controller 2 etc. Being a 3 or 6 button doesn't really affect this as long as the game is programmed to anticipate it being there. I hope that makes sense.
i was a sega user and i think it handicapped me i just could not get used to the shoulder buttons on playstation people with snes got a bit of head start
I can see how that was an issue. I was lucky enough to have both systems in my house growing up. Thanks for checking this series out and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.
This is the first part of a longer episode. There are 3 parts in total. Part 2 covers games that need the mode button to work. Part 3 covers games that use the mode button. A version of this including all 3 parts is on my channel, feel free to check it out when you need help falling asleep. Thanks for watching.
