How to become the envy of your classmates in 1993: Own the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat.

My Dad’s late friend was a MASTER at this particular version of the game. He knew all the moves, secrets like Reptile, tricks, the blood code, you name it-he’d outclass even the BEST of players at this game from plethoras of hours of practice. Unfortunately, he couldn’t play anymore due to arthritis. He eventually passed away because he refused to see a doctor for his long-ailing condition (for those who aren’t in the know, he passed away years before COVID-19 reared it’s fugly head) in the mid-2010’s. In the end, I ended up finding his box of old Sega Genesis games: one of them being Mortal Kombat. He had special moves written for each character written on pieces of paper, his copy still had the manual-cards still intact for collectability & authenticity, also whenever I see the Sega Genesis version of MK, I think of my Dad’s childhood friend whom we visited from time-to-time. RIP Woody.

MK's music is an important part of its DNA. The fact that the new movie music didnt even try to pay homage to the unique sound of MK music is such a missed opportunity

Best music version on genesis.

I'm forever impressed at the quality of this sound track even to this day. Whoever reworked this sound track for the Genesis version, WITHOUT using Gems engine should be real proud. It's still my favorite version sound track wise of any of the home ports. The quality of the percussion samples and the variations of those drums just blew me away even as a kid. Most games around that time on the genesis still cheaped out on the drums and it fills me with hype and nostalgia every time.

I love this version of the soundtrack. Matt Furniss is damn good in rearranging (recomposing) the original Forden's versions (1st and 2nd MK for SEGA).

Used to play this for hours and hours with my friends as kids... I still dust off the old genesis a couple times a year and pop in mk1 and put the beat down on my kids and finish them off with mind blowing fatalities. A true all round classic game.

The Mortal Kombat games and movies are the reason why now as an adult I love Arabic, Hindi, Oriental, and other music of the Middle East. It planted the seed in my head and gave me the 1st taste of the different instruments and these styles of music. Not many people make that connection, but when I play that type of music to/for them and they say hey I like this, why do i like this, why does it seem familiar like I've known this music my whole life. I ask them did you play Mortal Kombat games and watch the movies? And their mind is blown like holy shit you're right it's been there all along.

"Entrance" at 14:09 at the end is the best one. Brings back so many memories my gawd.

Man, the music for Goro's Lair in this version SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME when I was 7 years old! It was almost like nightmare fuel because of the brooding, eerie feel it had. And the skeleton in the background didn't make me feel any less afraid either.

Such sick beats and sounds for its time. The Genesis version is amazing alone just for this soundtrack alone.

Goro's lair theme is so badass.

Matt furniss did pretty good here, really hoped we could get the arcade versions of the music. I did read up that there was heavy limitations to the memory and storage. I think the music has had to take a hit as well

Man this was the first game I ever got with my Genesis back in 1998! Yeah I know I got my Genesis right at the end of the 16-bit era but my parents didn't have a lot of money. My sister figured out how to use Rayden's special move and to this day I still can't figure that one out. >_> Unfortunately my original copy broke, probably just needed to be cleaned but I was young and didn't know better so we threw it out. :( I need to replace it still but for now I have a Mega everdrive and Everdrive so I can still play it.

So eerie and sinister like, the genesis’s original music is so much better than the muffled super Nintendo’s attempt of the arcade soundtrack.

My first ever game system was a Sega and my cousin knowing I was getting one brought me this game to the family Christmas party. The image of this cartridge blasphemously on top of sonic and knuckles is my childhood.

7:51 - The Pit... my favorite as a kid playing this back in 1993 when I finally had it for myself. I always loved playing as Liu Kang and performing his fatality so the opponent would fall down and be impaled on the spikes below in dramatic fashion.

I always loved Hall. It's so sinister and heavy sounding at the same time.

Played this game with my older brothers when I was little. Now hearing this again, I never noticed how awesome the drums sounded! Those samples sound amazing, but when you play in game some of them get interrupted by other SFX which I guess is normal for that time haha. Thanks for the upload!

People seem to neglect these tracks when they do a "Best of Genesis / MegaDrive music but this is some of THE best on the system! Sometimes it's honesty hard to believe it's actually the Genesis.

Dare I say that the MK1 music by Matt Furniss for the Genesis is as good, if not better than the arcade, depending on the music you're in the mood to hear at the time. This music is amazing.

It seems Acclaim took some of the Arcade tracks and mixed them up with the their own tracks. For example: 12:51 Is the Game Over track in the Arcade. 14:56 Is that jingle when Reptile wins. 15:07 Is the title menu in the Arcade.

The combatants respect each other as warriors, no matter what degree of hatred they have for one another... a code of honor. Another type of code could be defined as an arbitrary system of symbols or letters for transmitting messages... a secret code. Mortal Kombat adheres to many codes, but does it contain one?

I was born in 1999 but my dad owned this amongst other games and I just to play it so much growing up!! Sonic the Hedgehog, Driver and Ecco The Dolphin were also my favs I was so lucky to grow up playing Mega Drive, Ps1 AND Ps2!! Great childhood

I was the first classmate to own this game for home consoles in my school classroom. I own the first 3 for the Genesis, but the original game to me will always be the best for the SG home console. Endless memories from years past when life was really good!!

SNES is superior hardware wise, but the music here is objectively better

I may enjoy the arcade more for its arcade feel, but man, by the time I played MK on the genesis on my rom, it has some great beat with the music that I just lay my hands dead on the table and just enjoy the beat.

Growing up with the Snes version of the game. I must say I would of much prefered the opening theme from the Genesis version. It sounds so much more tribal and fitting the animalistic nature of the combatants imo.
