@@artisticsolarninja I think the reason why R.O.B was added is because Rob is small enough to not be overpowered, so he was given every generic Robot trope that Sakurai could think of. The other reason is that Robots are everywhere in games like Sonic and most importantly (Joy mech fight).
@@orangeslash1667 although that makes sense, I wish they didn't go so generic on his final smash, in Brawl it was understandable but after that they could have used something different. I mean, Rob was such a major part of Subspace Emissary, so why not give him something like the subpace bomb, or turn him into the Ancient Minister? This is just nitpicking and throwing ideas really, but that's just fun to do when it comes to Smash
Here's an idea: Team Chaotix (Espio, Charmy and Vector) as the game's equivalent to Pokémon Trainer by referencing the Team Switching mechanic from Sonic Heroes.
Or Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers forming the New Line Trio because Freddy and Jason had a crossover in 2003 with, well, Freddy Vs. Jason. And Michael Myers would tag along since Rob Zombie made his own Halloween reboot, so Dimension Films also joins in.
In order to unlock segata sanshiro’s armor, shop, and weapon in Elden ring, you must beat every single boss by not taking 0 hits, but by taking -1 hits. Also you have to do this on the Sega saturn
I'm going for a guess to where we go from here: - Capcom Smash is the obvious one - Konami Smash is could be interesting - EA Smash has a lot of stuff to pick - Square Smash would be my pick for next year, but then I'd be happy with a build the roster for a Dissidia game with some guest characters from outside the Final Fantasy séries
If I had to pick a next direction, it would just build off this video... Console War Smash, Nintendo versus Sega, top 25-30 characters from each side regardless of release date.
@@christopherwallace7903 I've put a lot of thought into a Disney roster, but it's been really hard to settle on anything. Even if you take a LOT of liberties, there are just so many iconic Disney characters with no fighting ability whatsoever. Even in games like Sorcerer's Arena and Heroes: Battle Mode, they're relegated to support roles. So you're stuck either taking C-listers to represent the big movies like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, or you have to leave them totally unrepresented. A lot of tough calls IMO.
@@rachelespiritu4215 Part of what makes crossover fighters like this so special is that it allows us to see characters that we would never expect to see in a fighting game actually being able to punch and kick people. Crossover fighters have taught us that even if a character doesn’t seem like they would fit, they still can. Phoenix Wright in Marvel Vs Capcom. Villager and Isabelle in Smash Bros. Helga in Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl, and probably dozens of other crossover fighters that I have never heard of. Characters like Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan, Maleficant, Ariel, Beast, Simba, Stich, Wreck-It-Ralph, Elsa, Maui, and more would be excellent characters to see in a fighting game. We also have characters from Pixar, like Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Incredible, Mike Wazoski, Joy, Wall-E, and Miguel Rivera. And if we want to compete with Mutivesus, then let’s put in some bought characters, like from Marvel and Star Wars. We could even throw a few Fox characters in there like Homer Simpson, Charlie Brown, Scrat, and Peter Griffin. Heck, there’s even a franchise staring a certain spiky-haired boy with giant yellow shoes and wields a giant key as a weapon and has appeared in a certain crossover fighter, that is all about said key wielder teaming up with various Disney characters to fight various baddies. As for the franchises that can’t work as fighters like Finding Nemo and Up, just make them stages and have unlockable content based on them. Simple solution. Like I said, the competition is doing, so what is stopping us from doing it as well?
28:54 Fun fact, Shenmue was originally being developed as a Virtua Fighter RPG where you play as a young Akira Yuki. It eventually became it's own thing with Akira becoming Ryo, but he still carried a few things over like the same birth date and facial scars. So making him Akira's echo fighter would be very fitting.
I know a lot more SEGA series out there. Not just obscure or plain old games like Ristar, Super Monaco GP or Vectorman - but also Billy Hatcher and Jet Set Radio among other obscure games.
As a Sega fan myself, finally seeing ToeJam & Earl and Puyo Puyo characters being included together in a Sega fighting roster like this makes me SUPER happy as they're two of my most favorite Sega IPs
I have an idea for the drivers in Crazy Taxi. Have them fight with used taxi car parts. Taxi door for a shield bash, kind of like Samus' dash attack. An attack from a tailpipe, kind of like Bowser's neutral B. And an attack from a used tire as a bouncy projectile. So on and so forth. And have all the drivers be different skins and call them 'Taxi Driver' for the game like 'Hero' in smash ultimate.
That last part is unnecessary. All of the taxi drivers are named, and for Bowser Jr., he and all of the Koopalings have their names intact on the character select screen.
@@brandonwilliams6119 Exactly. Very similar situation to Captain Falcon; I reckon Sakurai would employ similar ideas to OTL when designing the Crazy Taxi rep
Love this vid, but there's a severe lack of Sega Genesis classics, Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Kid Chameleon, Dynamite Headdy, Decap Attack, The Ooze, Comic Zone, etc. to fill out the roster even further. The dragon from Panzer Dragoon would be cool too.
@@liammcnicholas918 Yeah, he's a third-party, but that shouldn't excuse him. And he was heavily associated with Sega early on, and exudes that early 90's style and attitude. This goes for several any other third-party characters, wouldn't hurt to squeeze some in for DLC at least.
I can imagine there's a lot from the Sonic franchise alone to fit into a fighting game all their own, particularly if Sega can work around legal issues and self-imposed restrictions to work in characters from alternate continuities or lesser known games. As for Smash-ish stuff, I'm still curious how an Xbox fighter would turn out.
@@nicholaspeters9919 There’s two actually. One we don’t talk about because it’s just worse virtua fighter, and the other one we don’t talk about because the story mode makes us cry
@@nicholaspeters9919 I like both of them just fine thanks. So ic the Fighters has these quirky animations and Looney tune physics I just can't help but enjoy.
I think SMT would be on the table for the DLC. Roy showed up in Melee, even though that game came out before his actual debut in his home series. A one month difference seems like enough for them to plan ahead.
I mean yeah kinda confused why they didn't pick the nahobino for that season since the design was actually revealed in July if I'm not mistaken, and off topic lol but honestly flynn from smt 4 would probably fit in Sega smash 4 well due to it being a pretty recent megami tensei game and it being the second best selling one after persona 4 Basically megami tensei would've been the fire emblem of Sega smash
Okay, the amount of effort you put into this, it just astounds me. I love this. And on the subject of the Subspace Emissary Story Mode for the Sega characters. . now I'm just picturing how this'll all go. . Heh, and thinking of that moment where Tails meets Kazuma. . yeah, like after Sonic is kidnapped, he's just walking around what players will recognize are the streets of Kamurocho. . the street gang confronts him, they're speaking Japanese. .and well Tails can't understand a word of it. . they get closer and closer, intending on beating the shit out of him . . we cut to repeated shots of SOMEONE approaching. . and just when one of them takes a bat to swing at Tails. . The mysterious person catches it. . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ihEJaxzSAQ4.html The camera dramatically reveals it to be. . KAZUMA KIRYU. . he takes the bat and just SMASHES IT into the assaulters face. . knocking him back, the street gang looks freaked out. . but then more and more street gang members start to surround the two. . Kiryu and Tails look to each other. . and silently nod. . and get ready to FIGHT. . (Considering in the story mode of Smash Brawl, there wasn't MUCH in terms of voice acting)
dude you know damn well in the summer time when singing will at least get some voice actors to be a part of the story hell like Sonic it will probably have a much bigger story than subspace emissary got to be honest with you right now the main reason why I saw the games are so popular is because of their story and voice acting as a part of the story so even though it will be a littlethe mute in some cutscenes most of them would have voice acting and this would be one of dumb
I'm pretty confident that if Sega Smash had started in the Saturn era, then Sakura would have been right there from the beginning, rather than having to wait until the Brawl equivalent. The franchise was really popular at the time.
Agreed, the whole ‘Marth debuted in Smash Bros’ will probably be known as ‘Sakura debuted in SEGA Smash’, like how(and I am ripping this from AlternateHistory) in Burying the Hatchet, Sakura debuted in Melee(the first chance she got), so the TvTrope was ‘Sakura debuted in Smash Bros’, although they said it could either be ‘Marth debuted in Smash Bros’ or ‘Roy debuted in Smash Bros’
Tbf Marth was planned for Smash 64 before being cut, so I could see the same happening to Sakura That said, yeah, she’d probably be in there from Melee
I also was confused at him saying Jack is "like piranha plant." He's a classic icon of JRPG's and has an endless amount of personal merchandise. But I guess he just sees him as just a common persona 5 enemy, so that's why he thought that was a fair comparison.
I was waiting for him to say Demi-fiend but it never came, him or Raidou would've been easy picks for SMT reps. You know, people who can summon other demons and not just Jack Frost
It's almost upsetting how Sega really doesn't use its older franchises. It really does suck as I'm a huge Sega fan and I love games like puyo puyo, nights, and yakuza. I'm not gonna lie I've truly loved this video I'm extremely happy with it.
According to supplementary lore and various games' story modes, the characters in Puyo Puyo are the ones playing the game as a way of fighting each other. When Puyos (the blocks) pop, they release a burst of magical energy, and all the characters have a technique to absorb that energy in order to fuel their spells. In the Puyo Puyo Tetris games, the Tetris side of the cast are from a parallel universe where Tetriminoes do the same thing, so someone like Tee could technically work as a guest character. If a Puyo/Tetris character was introduced in Sega Smash 4 or Ultimate, they might have a resource gimmick akin to Hero's MP that can be used to power up their specials, though they would have to manually gather more like Inkling or Steve as opposed to it regenerating over time/with normal hits.
33:33 see, the thing is, the main obstacle to Fire Emblem getting into Smash 64 was that the _games_ weren’t localized at the time. This is not the case for Shining Force, so it seems more likely that a character from it would be in Sega Smash Saturn
I actually like Arle being introduced in Melee as a sort of Marth-like character in the aspect that she's there to promote a Japanese exclusive series to a western audience. For her moves, she'd 100% have her signature spells like Fire, Ice Storm, Brain Damned, etc. Her down special could be Diacute which works exactly like the original, powering up the next magic attack, and it can be stacked twice similarly to Incineroar's down special. When Final Smashes get introduced, she would 100% have her signature Bayoen attack. Carbuncle would appear in her taunts, kinda like Morgana in Joker's taunts. I'll be honest, I was caught off guard to see Amitie get added. Of course she'd be similar to Arle, but definetly have more Puyo focused attacks. Her final Smash would be Fever Mode, causing TONS of Puyos to rain down from the top of the screen and cause huge chain explosions. Hell, maybe it can reference that old animation where Satan has a nightmare where he's trapped in a Puyo board. If Amitie caught me off guard, I was NOT expecting to see Yu Narukami on here. I kinda forgot about P4 Arena until seeing him, but he just makes sense. Minato/Makoto is my personal preference since I have his headphones, so I'd probably play him over Yu. I get adding Ringo as an echo, but Schezo is WAY too iconic to leave out, plus he'd be just different enough to be a unique character. He's a sword fighter that would probably focus more on that and magic rather than Puyos. He's too important to leave out since he's been there since the very start with Madou Monogatari. If I had any say in the Puyo Puyo reps though, I'd say Arle, Schezo, Satan, Amitie (as an echo). I would like to break the rule once and add in Hatsune Miku since she IS one of the larger characters Sega has the rights to for games. I get that she's not originally from a video game, but I'd actually make the R.O.B. argument for her. Miku would bring in an audience from Vocaloid, rhythm gamers, and anime fans. Plus she's got references to Puyo Puyo and Sonic in her games, so Sega isn't opposed to putting those three together. (Hell, there were Sonic themed Puyos in one of the Puyo Puyo games, and Project Mirai DX had a Puyo Puyo minigame against the other Vocaloids) Also I'm just really biased and want Miku to be in more things that aren't rhythm games.
Kiryu in Sega Brawl wouldn't make a lot of sense to have a stance swapping system. Those were exclusive to Yakuza 0 and Kiwami that came waaay after Brawl. I'd say a good substitute is picking a random weapon like a bike or traffic cone, with the rare chance of a home run bat. Also I mean... honestly I think the Guest character should still he Snake.
Maybe have him as a gauge character, incentivising aggression to build up heat and then using heat moves, maybe have the final smash be a feel the heat segment with you mashing a certain or in Brawls case, maybe waggle the wiimote.
@@arctic8511 honestly, yes. heat is a major part of the yakuza franchise, and has much more importance than just the fighting stances. yagami's stances are also more unique than the ones in yakuza 0, so that'd make for a much more interesting character.
I say just cut that and add that later since unfortunately 1 issue Yakuza 0 and Kiwami(the games with style switch) came in 2015 Smash 4 came out 2014 and Smash Ultimate came out 2018 Yakuza 6 reintroduce the 1 style mechanic so to compensate I say Kiryu will have his style switch but make it only 3 styles DE Dragon as his base Rush and then Beast as his others making him kinda like Shulk And also for Smash 4 Kiryu Final Smash would be his Dragon Rage from Yakuza 5 ending in Essence of Dragon King
I am still thinking of potential guest characters for this game, most of them have connections to SEGA: A bit of a change for SEGA Smash Brawl Snake(Metal Gear Solid) Sega Smash 4 Ryu(Street Fighter) PAC-Man DLC Terry Bogard(Fatal Fury) Nightmare(Soul Calibur) Kirby Sega Smash Ultimate Strider Hiryu Fighters Pass Volume 1 Pikachu(Pokémon) Bill Razer(Contra) Earthworm Jim Billy Lee(Double Dragon) Fighters Pass 2 Scorpion(Mortal Kombat) Simon Belmont(Castlevania) Kazuya(Tekken) Neptunia(Hyperdimension Neptunia)
This means not only would we have Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur, but also Street Fighter, SNK Fighters, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken, all of the most iconic fighting games of all time ruling it out.
I think the only thing missing was an actual main line SMT rep, probably Demi Fiend being introduced in Sega 4. And as much as I love Makoto and Kotone, I think Aeigis or Elizabeth would be more fitting Persona 3 reps
Now this one was sorely needed. I've been diving into more of Sega's franchises beyond what my 98 baby self grew up with, new and old, and I've fallen in LOVE. I've seen many in crossover stuff but actually playing/seeing playthroughs of their games has me realize Sega has MAGIC in their vault and unlike many others, they're making serious effort to actually utilize them. Some still need dusting off, but overall like you says, there doing a WAAAAYYY better job than many other companies. No joke, I kinda vibe with their larger library more than even Nintendo's, these franchises, dormant or active, just bring a joy to me playing games I've never felt playing games since I was a kid (not that I ever stopped enjoying games but I feel a special happiness with Sega stuff). So thanks for this video Thorgi, have the algorithm boost and I hope this does numbers and spreads Sega IPs out there more. I have my own roster picks I would've done a little differently, but that's the beauty of our interests and priorities when crafting this stuff, and I'll watch the other channel you mentioned with their take. Quality stuff as always
As a 97 baby who also grew up with a similar view of the company I really relate. My friends and are have been obsessing over the Dreamcast lately and what could've been
I want more Sega All Stars games, and just for Sega to bring back classics like NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Billy Hatcher, Space Channel 5, Samba de Amigo, Skies of Arcadia, etc.
You know a Sega-exclusive guest who would be pure irony? Pulseman, from Game Freak. One hell of a deep cut with a very good moveset and possibly his gimmick of charging up electricity as he runs, so he can use some moves
This was a very interesting roster and learning about Sega games was pretty interesting. If I were to pick one guest character, I’d go with Neptune from Hyperdimension Neptunia. Sega did have help with making the 1st game and Neptune is a character that’s a personification of Sega consoles and games and it would be pretty funny to see the Sega characters have a battle with what is essentially their goddess.
13:51 Actually, mounted beasts aren't the most impressive things one can do in Golden Axe, but the top tier spells make for VERY IMPRESSIVE Final Smashes. And besides, riding on a beast would go against Smash Ultimate's "Straight to the Punch" rule they put on Final Smashes.
Wow! Sega has so many likeable characters in it's gaming legacy. For a possible 2nd Season Sega Smash Ultimate DLC, I'd probably include these: Sakuya - Shining Blade Tee - Puyo Puyo Tetris Pai Chan - Virtua Fighter Shirogane Naoto - Persona 4 Raquna Sheldon - Etrian Odyssey Demi Fiend - SMT Nocturne
As much as I'd love to see Tee, he's technically owned by the Tetris company instead of Sega, and I don't think they would let Sega put him in. Maybe Ally/Rafisol as an alternative since Ally's considered a protagonist?
@@kiwikarp9509 hmm... you might be right. Ok, Ally/Rafisol it is... and what do you think of these Shining characters? Rage Sakuya Rick Neris Ein Touka Kanon Roselinde Altina Fried Shannon Kilmaria Ryuga Pairon

@@kiwikarp9509 Roselinde huh? I'd honestly think that Sakuya might be the coolest name for a Shining character followed by Kilmaria, then Touka, then Ein and then Rage.
I feel like there's a lot of untapped Puyo potential with just how many characters it's gotten over the years. More than effectively three Arles, anyway. Heck, it could be a Build the Roster video of its own!
Yeah, but the guy has a lot of research to do. As I'm typing this he said "Puyo Puyo still keeps getting games nonstop" as if it hasn't been like 13 years since the last Mainline Puyo Game. Moral of the story: SEGA please I know you're probably working on Puyo Puyo 8 just give us a sign
@@heyoyo10gaming4 If I remember correctly, the devs said they’ve moved away from numbered entries, stuff like Chronicle is pretty much as mainline as 7 was.
Something about Arle. In the Puyo Puyo games, the characters each have different phrases they call out when they make combos. In Arle’s case, those combo names are a variety of magic spells from those early RPGs she was a part of. So I’m thinking that she could have a system where she uses Puyos for attacks, and the more attacks she lands and combo explosions she pulls off, the more of her spells become available. Maybe almost like the Dragon Quest hero, except her magic menu would be static. She could have a projectile that throws puyos, one that spins them (and the opponent) around, and one that creates a tower of garbage blobs for her to jump off of. And her down special could be her spell menu, with Fireball, Ice Storm, Mind Blast, and Bayoen Her final smash could simply be her pulling off a massive Puyo combo, and burying the enemy in garbage blobs.
Didn't realize Sakura Taisen and especially Sakura herself was so beloved. I love Sakura myself too (she was one of my classic fictional crushes way back in the day) to the point I do have her in my wishlist for Smash as a Sega rep XD.
I gotta say, I was completely immersed with this video. As a 1999 baby I did get into Smash growing up, but Brawl was the first in the series that I got a chance to be invested in from the start of its announcement. So seeing this roster build up, all the while culminating to the introduction of Sega Smash Ultimate? I could just imagine the pure *HYPE* from seeing SoR4 Axel Stone, Bayonetta side-by-side with Jeanne, Toejam & Earl presumably coming back if 4 was as kind to them as it was to the Ice Climbers, I was getting SO PUMPED for the occasional new character for a game that doesn't even exist. I really did find myself drawing back to that hype of going back to our dial-up internet and seeing all of the returning characters for Nintendo Brawl, all of the new stages, all of the features and modes, especially the stage builder! And that hype building with every new entry, all the way to Ultimate which blew me and so many other people off our feet with that reveal announcement. You did such a bang-up job with this video, I swear. Bless you.
I as a big fan of Valkyria Chronicles was SO HAPPY to see you include characters from that, I was even shocked you went for Welkin over Alicia, even as a possible Selvaria Echo, but it does make alot of sense in that Star Fox way considering he did still get out of his tank to fight. May have popped harder though for you managing to find some way to imagine how Football Manager could feature. Overall, cracking job with this!
I'd love a Sega VS Capcom game, but Sega has more than enough series to pull from to make their own fighting game Can't say I agree with having 3 Persona characters but, aside from Jack Frost, no Megami Tensei characters. I'd say replace Makoto Yuki/P3 protag with Demifiend from SMT3 Anyway aside from that, banger roster
23:29 To be fair, they’re reflecting on the entire roster as of Ultimate. And due to the several move set changes from Melee to Ultimate, Fox /Falco and Mario/Dr. Mario have a bunch of notable differences now that would make them stand apart from each other compared to like say how similar Simon/Richter and Daisy/Peach are, so referring Falco and Dr. Mario as echos in Ultimate wouldn’t be accurate
Hmmm...a very interesting(as well as informative) video. Although not Smash related, I do have some ideas for build the roster episodes such as: -What if there was a rival to Marvel Vs Capcom....made by thier OWN rivals(DC Vs SNK) -What if Nintendo and Sega had actual VS game(Nintendo Vs Sega) -A Fighting game Smash(Not that it play like Smash, but just all of the original fighting game franchises all in one game)
In an alternate universe, Sonic made a Build the Roster about a hypothetical RU-vid fighting game and put Thorgi in it, then went into a deep explanation about him being a fan favorite or something and that's why he deserved a spot.
I'm so fucking hyped for this, let's gooooooooooooooooooooooooo Maybe you could do a shonen jump smash Bros next, that would be cool But I think this one deserves the ultimate treatment, so probably not next year?
Since Roy debuted in Melee before his own game even released, something similar could have been done with Kiryu being added to the Sega Melee before the first Yakuza game released.
Its a real shame more Sega reps weren't in smash bros. I don't wanna be the guy to complain about sword fighters taking up the roster but it's really such a shame. But this here is good. Puyo puyo, yakuza, nights, pluseman, ristar, and hell even persona are stuff that I'd love to see in a Sega fighting game.
If you want suggestions for future Smash-clone BtRs, one idea I’ve had for a while: Super Robot Smash Wars. Super Robot Wars is a huge series of crossover games between a bunch of giant robot anime, with chibified designs that’d work great for a platform fighter, and it even added Sakura Wars as dlc in its latest installment so it’s kinda on topic for this video. Another idea I had for a Smash clone would be Madoka Magica. The series features some crazy inter-dimensional battlefields that’d translate well into platform fighter stages, and while it might initially seem like its cast is too small for a fighting game, it’s got a huge expanded universe to pull from.
Madoka Magica Smash? How about Magical Girl Smash that features characters from Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Precure, Yuusha De Aru, Nanoha, Symphogear, etc?
@@HeartAino193 I was thinking about that too, but the problem is then a lot of really cool characters would be left out for the sake of the main characters. Like, for Symphogear, we might not even get Miku since she doesn’t fight a lot, which would be sad since HibiMiku OTP. Besides, all of the series you listed would work better as their own stand-alone fighting games, and I chose Madoka Magica specifically since I think it’s setting would provide the most variety in platformer stages.
A few ideas for Build the Roster topics: Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion 2 - Nickelodeon has already jumped in the fighting game pool, but CN already has a platform fighter series and something like this (obviously done better and with more characters people want) would see them directly competing with Nickelodeon. Instead of people just comparing Nick All-Star Brawl to Smash, imagine a reignition of the CN vs. Nick debates. DreamMix TV Fighters 2: Konami vs. Hasbro - Sounds weird, I know, but the original DreamMix game (a Japan-only crossover platform fighter) was a crossover between Konami, Hudson Soft (which has since been bought up by Konami), and Takara Toys (basically the Japanese Hasbro which owns the Japanese toy rights to some of the same franchises that Hasbro does). Capcom All-Stars - You yourself said you always felt like Capcom should've had an internal crossover fighter and I'm sure you're far from the only one that thinks that, yet the closest Capcom has come to that since the-game-which-shall-remain-nameless is the card game Teppen. Xbox Superstar Deathmatch - This might be if you want to do something a little different because I could see this being more of a hero shooter (in the style of TF2 or Overwatch) rather than a fighting game, but if Microsoft were to do a crossover of their biggest gaming series, I honestly think a shooter would fit them better.
Disney Smash Bros: With the competition making platform fighters, having attempted to cross over their franchises many times, and even having a character in a platform fighter, you’d think that there would be a Disney Platform Fighter right about now. Nope. I say that needs to change. Console Wars: What if Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox decided to settle their differences and work on a fighting game together, where the most iconic characters from each console would duke it out? Disney vs. Nintendo: Two of the biggest companies in their region, and there has been a crossover with characters associated with both, (Disney owns Marvel and Capcom is basically Nintendo’s best friend at this point), why not have the legendary matchup of Mickey Mouse vs Mario?
@@boydixonentertainment And it looks better than Nickelodeon Smash. Thorgi should do a video where he rebuilds the roster and creates a better one, because the one we got was not that great. Also where is Dante from Huntik? How could they messed that up?
@@basilofgoodwishes4138 To repeat what Thorgi said though, I really feel bad for the Devs of Nick. You got this company worth who knows how much, and they barely give you much resources or time to work with,
1: Really? No Arle on the Sega Smash 64 roster? 2: If Brawl came out in 2008, Silver would make the most sense as another Sonic rep, being one of the main protagonists of Sonic 06. Or even Blaze since when was in Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure as a protag on top of being a secondary character in 06. 3: 1:37:47 The best you could do is Demi-Fiend, protag of Nocturne (which got a remaster recently) and a Superboss in SMTV as well as one of the Digital Devil Saga games, where he's considered one of if not the hardest bosses in RPGs.
Love the video, this is absolutely one of the best you've done so far but some of the picks are very odd/redundant to me. Firstly I would switch out the Persona 3 protag for Demi-Fiend from SMT 3, if this alternate universe were reality the fact that we would get 3 Persona reps and 0 SMT reps (Jack Frost aside) would cause more bad blood between those fanbases. Then I would switch out Ecco The Dolphin for a Vanillaware character, either the Amazon or Sorceress from Dragon's Crown, Momohime from Muramasa: The Demon Blade or Velvet or Gwendolyne from Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, mainly because I cannot imagine how a dolphin could fight on its flippers . And lastly switch out Segata Sanshiro for the Nahobino, at the end of the day Segata is a commercial mascot and SMT V was only released 1 month after the last dlc which isnt a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Thorgi this was pretty darn great, you managed to not only make 4 rosters but make each one sound both believable and entirely hype for the era that they came from. Yet again you've made me desperately want to see the existence of a game that will likely never see the light of day and it was especially cool to highlight all these sega franchises. Some reactions to the videos commentary Lol at that Skies of Arcadia Fanboying. Personally, I was really underwhelmed when I played it but no disagreement Vyse and Aika are really strong designs. Phantasy Star Online is a brilliant sega replacement for the mii fighters Dude, I heard Daytona and I was like "Do it you mad man, put Hornet in there and unleash the chaos" Heck yeah Echo the dolphin goes in there, it's weird to think about but totally doable if you break your mind away from traditional fighting game body types. Minor constructive criticism, I realize you guys put a lot of work into these and just building a roster for something like this was insane, but I do feel like you unevenly distribute the amount of extra content you discuss in individual episodes of build the roster. I really felt like the last few videos you've really condensed the description of characters playstyles and while not every episode needs to be MvC 5 I would like to see more unique ideas that make this individual fighting game distinct beyond having a roster of compelling characters. Anyways thanks for another great video and I look forward to next years smash iteration and sonic the fighters 2, you can't escape it now that youve mentioned all the sonic characters.
Seriously when segata sanshiros opening bars played i knew I jumped up and I frickin popped like the sega mark I am. Jesus h christ I wanted this for so long. Sega needs love and it broke my heart when they left the console war. So this was truly a love letter to the company I grew up with. Dude you've outdone yourself. I'd argue though that I Ichiban would be a better echo fighter for Kiryu. For the final fighter I'd include mecha sonic. Because if your going big go back to your roots. Or another choice for an echo fighter is Yagami from the judgment series. He could be a viable choice since he has several different fighting styles and he is kind of a polar opposite of kiryu if not a parallel.
I played project X zone 2 and it was a huge realization of the sega properties I was absolutely blown away. It's crazy the amount of legacy they have and I wish they brought back some of their older franchises for modern audiences.
I was REALLY hoping for Joe Musashi in Smash Ultimate honestly. It was a fool's hope, but I still held to it. Segata Sanshiro and Opa Opa's inclusions brought a huge smile to my face. Glorious video on what could've been. Amazing job!
1. Your What If ? parody was great and I like the little Smash intros you have made. 2. You made two crucial mistakes. A. If Sakurai didn't include guest characters in this Sega Smash, then he and his team would use the time and resources to include other Sega characters. This means the number of characters would remain the same. B. It was Kojima who came to Sakurai and asked him to include Snake in Smash Bros and Bandai Namco would probably be co-developing on the games from 4 onwards and also bringing their characters into the games. So Snake would also be in Sega Smash Brawl, Pac-Man in Sega Smash 4 and Kazuya in Sega Smash Ultimate.
Okay, now I've seen a lot of things i never even knew existed is pretty interesting and make me wanna play Sonic Racing games to appreciate the older characters. Also the big what if gag at the beginning i was expecting a "what if it was Capcom vs DC instead of MvC" that is a solid idea for a new Build The Roster. When I told that to a friend who watches this videos with me he came up with the crack ship of Jason Todd x Akira Kazama Lastly, if Thorgi does a smash style game every year, next time I'm calling it gotta be Disney (maybe KH?) or Cartoon Network (like Nickelodeon Brawl)
Yeah, the og sonic racing on ds is how I was introduced to a lot of their franchises, same with project x zone 2 on 3ds. Super monkey ball and sonic where the only two I knew about outside of those.
I'm creating a cartoon. It's called, Forgotten Tales! It's about these forgotten and obscure characters that no one remembers from media that go on wacky and crazy adventures.
My heart weeps for the fact that, within 2 hours of Sega discussion, we couldn’t fit one Rhythm Thief mention 😔 Gotta say though, the PSO rep replacing mini brawlers was very clever! Props on that (and literally everything else, this is one spectacular video)!
This was super cool! Though I'm genuinely surprised that we got no Virtual On characters! That game was huge for SEGA, but mostly in Japan. Likewise, it'd be cool to get more Atlus reps! While SMTV wasn't around, the SMTIII remake had just come out/was coming out near the end of the Smash DLC, perfect time to bring in Demifiend as a Pokemon Trainer-like! They were also the creators of Trauma Center, it'd be super weird and fun to see a Surgery-themed fighter. Or one of the Snowboard Kids! Or Vincent from Catherine with his unique puzzle mechanics. Either way, I'm sure this required a lot of work and research and this genuinely feels like a labor of love! Great job.
If Virtual-On is the Custom Robo of Sega, then it not appearing makes perfect sense. /s I was definitely expecting at least Temjin or Fei-Yen to pop up on this list (also Chu Chu Rocket where?).
Surprised there was no SMT rep. Demi-fiend from Nocturne would've been an easy pick imo. I also think Sam Gideon from Vanquish would be a really solid character.
I find it strange there wasn't any new Sonic character in your Ultimate roster. There are so many options - Metal Sonic, Silver, Infinite as the new Byleth (in terms of reception)... But I would go for the character that would arguably be considered as the Ridley equivalent - people have wanted this character since Melee, it has appeared as a boss in Brawl (and possibly a stage hazard or Assist Trophy in Sm4sh), and has been memed for being way too big - Chaos. You could give him a gimmick where he can slowly upgrade all the way up to Chaos 6 (kinda like the Centurion), and then his Final Smash is Perfect Chaos shooting a giant laser.
Kinda hard to compare any Sonic character to Byleth in terms of reception for a Sega Smash, since we're comparing what is by far Sega's biggest franchise to a series that (while having grown a lot in popularity over the past decade) is significantly smaller then other big name series with less and/or worse representation such as Legend of Zelda or Kirby.
Let's be brutally honest, the only Sonic character worth adding to Ultimate roster would've been Metal Sonic and even then he would've only fit as echo fighter for Sonic.
Ya know what I think would be a good Build The Roster/Let's Make A Fighting Game episode? An episode about a Tales fighting game, I know there was one on the PSP but it was only in Japan and um...it wasn't good from what I heard, but yeah I think that'd be a fun video. Also this video was absolutely amazing and I wanna live in this reality now.
Had to go back and give this a watch. To this day, I think this is your best "Build the Roster." That being said, I do think there would be more of a case of Hatsune Miku being in a Sega Smash game, as a lot of her popularity came from the Project Diva, and more recently Project Sekai games, especially in the West, as previously, she was just a voice bank designed for singing songs. The Diva games defined who Hatsune Miku is, and, I would argue, helped to bolster her popularity. Plus, she would be an easy inclusion for SEGA, seeing as how they have the exclusive rights to develop Miku games. Plus, she's appeared in SEGA games such as Space Channel 5 and Persona. Now, whether Sakurai would have seen her as a video game character is hard to say, but I'd argue that it would be much easier to justify her inclusion moreso than the other "Non-gaming characters", such as the Xenomorph, which would require far more legal hoops to include. Of course, that's just me, and in the grand scheme of things, the roster you have covers all the important bases, and hits on the most important pillars in SEGA's video game repertoire.
Ecco could actually move around pretty easily Have them flop around on the ground when idle and have a small wave come out of the ground below them that they can surf on to move
Cool, now make a Capcom All-Stars video and a Namco Smash video and combine the three for a Project X Zone Build the Roster. EDIT: If we did end up talking more about guest characters, I would’ve gone with not just third-parties from other video game companies, but also the licensed franchises Sega uses. Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star and Gabriel Angelos from Warhammer 40,000 come to mind for me.
God, this is fantastic. Huge respect for putting so much thought and time and effort into this, your passion for games really shines through. But now I’ve paid proper respect to the sick video, time to get self-indulgent. My ideal no holds barred picks: Chuck D. Head, a Virtuaroid from Virtual-On, Vectorman, Sketch Turner, Pulseman, Kid Chameleon, someone from Dynamite Deka, Simone from Cannon Spike, the skeleton from Mutant League, a Power Stone rep, someone from Golden Axe: The Duel, Metal Sonic, and if we allowed the flimsiest possible justification for guests I’d love Sol Badguy.
@@Zeronichi People said that we didn’t need a forth Smash Bros game. People said that we didn’t need a fifth Smash Bros game. People are saying we don’t need a sixth Smash Bros game. If Ultimate has taught us anything, it’s that Smash Bros can still improve even when it’s seemingly at its peak.
@@christopherwallace7903 Thorgi would be making a new roster instead of trying to pick and choose what characters to keep and witch ones to leave from a roster with over what 70 of them.
If Sakurai made this game after making kirby it's likely he'd push to put kirby characters in Sega smash even if Nintendo owned them. Either kirby is put under the Sega name or he'd put kirby in as a guest charecter like mario.
For an SMT representative, Flynn (SMT4 MC), Nanashi (SMT4A MC), Demi-Fiend (SMT3 MC) and Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV (SMT Raidou vs Souless Army and Raidou vs King Abbadon MC) could work Flynn, Nanashi and Raidou use Swords, Guns and Demons they recruit to fight so you can work in a lot of demon cameos and their final smash could be like summoning Satan who shoots Megiddo Cannon at the enemy or Lucifer who drops a Morning Star. Raidou will summon The Soulless God, a massive demon the size of a Star Destroyer from SW to fire at the opponents. Demi-Fiend uses his fists, his Waifu Pixie and a host of unique attacks, such as: Javelin Rain where he kicks beams of energy at you, Deadly Fury where he conjures a sword of energy and Jetstream Sam style whips it out at you, Magma Axis, where he shoots fire at you, Freikugel where he shoots a beam of concentrated energy out of his face Cyclops style and his most signature attack, which can work as his Final Smash, Gaea Rage, where he says "fuck it, I'm done playing with you" and *nukes the entire playfield* Alternatively, his Final Smash can be a replica of his most iconic scene where he grabs you, the screen goes dark, in background you see an entire demon army and in front just glowing red eyes and his tattoos as he pounces at you and tears you to pieces with his army.
Wow, incredible list, nice work, yet again! If I had to make this game, however, it would definitely have guest characters, even though no one would know the relationships between Sakurai and the 3rd party companies. So, if I had to choose, here's who it'd be for such a game. Fang (Contra Hard Corps) Edward Falcon (Power Stone) Nightmare (Soul Calibur) Eric Lacarde (Castlevania Bloodlines) Wizard (Gauntlet Legends) Scorpion (Mortal Kombat) Kyo (King of Fighters) Claire (Resident Evil)
I think Phantom R from Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure could be a good newcomer or a decent echo of Ulala or Amigo in Sega Smash 4. If he were passed up in 2014, he'd become an assist trophy in Ultimate or be forever ignored.
Raphael/Phantom R is the true equivalent of Geno for Sega fans lmao. Like mans is seldom or never acknowledged unless it’s in some obscure ass Japan only rhythm game (Hi MaiMai, I love you) or as paid DLC in an upcoming thing. Doubly so since there are actual mini games in Rhythm Thief that reference both Samba De Amigo and Space Channel 5
@@GoreHusbando Paid DLC for an upcoming thing? Are you alluding to a real game? I'm all ears if so! I had no idea that music was in another game! Two of the three tracks they chose for MaiMai were ones I put on my VG playlist, funnily enough (Phantom R's theme and Cheering Marie). Thanks for telling me.
I was originally gonna argue with you about lacing shadow as an echo fighter (especially since he would be a vital character for a SEGA Smash Bros) but you make a good point about his debut in SA2 and I like your idea of him getting new moves like Chaos Control and whatnot later on. Great job on the video!
Thorgi: Sega bought Atlus... Me: Oh cool, are we gonna include Atlus characters? Stocke from Radiant Historia? Demifiend from SMT3? The Sorceress from Dragon's Crown? Any of the protagonists from Trauma Center like Derek? Thorgi: 3 Persona protagonists! Me: Oh...
I know right? Man ignored a whole plethora of games, I know Persona is super popular now and all, and its the greatest thing ever to some people (even though most P5 "fans" haven't even played the game, or if they have they refuse to play the other titles because they're "unpolished" or whatever, and that's unfortunately a fact), but Atlus has so many other titles to pull from and characters with many different abilities and you choose three characters all from the same series with the exact same Wild Card ability. And Jack Frost who, while representing their main series, SMT, is written off more as a guy who's just there as a filler pre order bonus rather than a mascot of an entire series and company. Sorry this was kinda long, it just slightly irked me that the guy who made the video seemed kinda dismissive with SMT and Atlus's other works, I've seen a lot of people who act that way towards us fans and the series, and I'm honestly just tired of it, but again, sorry.
Thorgi you have such a vast imagination, I really love how you put this together. Seein’ as though Sega, and Capcom are my favorite companies, I felt nostalgic watching this.
3 Persona characters but not a single character from Shin Megami Tensei other than Jack Frost? That's extremely questionable. Also, adding Nahobino as the final DLC character in order to promote SMTV sounds like something Sega would do. Much like what Nintendo did with Corrin.
Thank you for bringing that up, hell, Demi-fiend also would work perfectly, Nocturne's remaster was released before October, Demi-fiend is the most popular SMT character, he's in the new game, as well as Digital Devil Saga, in both games many refer to him as the mostly difficult superboss in JRPG history, man really didn't do a lot of research for SMT, then again I can't say I'm surprised, that's kinda what everyone does to us SMT fans
Great to see another video. This should be a fun topic to watch. Now, as a suggestion, I think it would be great to have a Build the Roster for a new Twisted Metal game.
I wanted to comment to promote this video further (a bit late, I know) and I just wanna say that this is one of the best youtube videos that I have EVER seen and I greatly admire the work you put into this and the entertainment I and so many others have found in the final product. Seriously, OMG, great job
Man, when the sega version of the Melee intro kicked in, I felt one of those chills that start in your face and forces you to smile, and then it goes down your spine. You earned your like and sub, man.
Nice to see a Sega Smash-Bros style roster come life. Love that you decided to cover from original through Ultimate Smash. I’m going to assume more Smash-like rosters will be the next BTR? Maybe Capcom? Disney? Also, I’m not expecting anyone to try this considering that this certain series has A LOT of shows and OVA’s, and would take a lot of time and effort to do, but I would love to for someone to try a Gundam fighting game, only that it must be Universal Century ONLY. It’s insane that if you take out Wing, Seed, G, and 00, you still have a butt load, of Mobile Suits to use with different variety.
I’ve been pretty vocal about the issues with Smash’s roster, especially regarding diversity. Let’s see how you fare with SEGA. Hopefully there’s actually some melanin in this roster. EDIT: Yup, we got B.D. Joe, Rodin, & Cherry Hunter (& I think a fourth I couldn’t find in the video but was in the character select screen)! Glad to see that you delivered regarding cool Black characters. Personally I would’ve squeezed in Vanessa as well, but you got 3 of the 4 I was hoping for.
