About the Speaker:
Hannah Barnes is an award-winning journalist, bestselling author of Time to Think, and Associate Editor the New Statesman. She was producer, reporter, editor at the BBC in London for 15 years - most recently Investigations Producer at the BBC's flagship news and current affairs program, Newsnight. There, she led its coverage of the care available to young people experiencing gender-related distress, which helped precipitate an extensive review of this area of healthcare by the UK’s National Health Service.
The Tavistock’s Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) closed on April 30, 2024. It was replaced with two new hubs that are focused on delivering a fundamentally new model of care which prioritizes psychosocial and psychotherapeutic support for gender-dysphoric youth. More hubs are expected to open in the future to accomodate high volumes of gender-dysphoric youth seeking care.
Barnes' book, Time To Think: The Inside Story of the Collapse of the Tavistock’s Gender Service for Children, is a meticulously researched account of what went wrong at the Tavistock Clinic, drawing on thousands of pages of documents and well over a hundred hours of personal testimony, and was shortlisted for the prestigious Orwell Prize for Political Writing.
