My guest today is Hannah Barnes, investigative journalist, associate editor at the New Statesman, and author of 'Time to Think: The Inside Story of the Collapse of the Tavistock's Gender Service for Children.' We spoke about the findings of the Cass Review, what exactly went wrong at the Tavistock, and why the situation in America is even worse when it comes to transgenderism and children.
In the extended version of the episode, we also spoke about the scandalous state of NHS maternity care, and whether the failures of these two different areas of healthcare come down to similar institutional problems. You can listen to the full extended episode at louiseperry.substack.com.

Great discussion, thanks both. And thank you Hannah for your excellent book. I’d encourage everyone to read it to understand in depth what happened at the Tavistock. We desperately need more journalists with your professionalism, objectivity and integrity

It's strange that you mention objectivity, since that book seemed highly manipulative to me. I wonder what you made of the included testimonies of trans people? I kept waiting for there to be an actual horror story, but by halfway through all I’d got was four happy trans people who happened to make some slightly controversial comments about other trans people, all based on supposition and none drawing on their own experiences. And then there was the testimony of a parent regarding a child who may or may not have agreed with that testimony, but from whom the parent admitted they were estranged (a technique Lisa Littman relied on heavily when positing her ROGD theory). I can't think of much that could be less objective or more manipulative than quoting that mother calling a trans person she had never met a "groomer", or than uncritically quoting another interviewee making non-evidence based assertions about the causes of gender dysphoria in people they barely knew. I’m very curious where the integrity is in any of that?

I know a lot of people have decided not to vote for the Tory government at the next election in protest at their record of broken promises and failure, particularity on immigration, but it strikes me that if there is one good reason to hold your nose and vote for them in spite of those objections is it the trans issue. Labour will roll back a lot of the gains in this area.

45:58 Respect to Hannah and the huge amount of work she has put into documenting GIDS, but it simply isn't true that children in the UK won't be getting puberty blockers in future. Even if the trial which was already announced to begin in December this year doesn't go ahead for some reason, children and young people are already obtaining these drugs from grey market and illegal sources. Activists will make sure this continues.

The most amazing thing about the Cass review and the reaction afterward is that we needed a multi-year review to tell us that you can't just want to be or think yourself into being of the opposite biological sex to that which you are. We needed am expensive 'official' review for the bleeding obvious to be openly stated? Geez!!

Yes. Why on earth would that be a concrete symptom that needs addressing affirmatively VS dysphoria around being able bodied, healthy weight, a particular race etc We do not want to amputate healthy limbs, we do not want to give liposuction to anorexic teens. There is nothing to indicate "Gender" dysphoria is somehow unique and a genuine, mentally healthy urge

Why did NHS England not force these adult services to hand over the data whilst the Cass review process was underway? I can't believe that Cass only let them know when the report was finished. Clearly they must have been informed whilst it was happening. The whole thing sounds dodgy on their part too, not just the actual adult services. And as Hannah says it will takes years to get and analyse this data now AND it won't be done by Cass. I feel suspicious about this point because the law was changed in order for the Cass team to get this data and yet still it didn't happen. And NHS England did not compel these services to hand over the data until after the report was done.

I am opposed to both minors transitioning and minors getting married, for the same reason, adult situations with long lasting consequences should simply not be allowed to be imposed on minors. Besides, if a minor is intersex, a very tiny fraction of the population, then their bodies will naturally produce cross-sex hormones, which is a birth condition which needs to be addressed at puberty. Outside of these genetic exceptions, adults should just leave minors to make their own decisions until adulthood, much like the fact that INTERSEX INFANT COSMETIC SURGERIES NEED TO END, yet every single trans bill passed by the Republicans has an exception to allow for intersex minor cosmetic surgeries!

'Private healthcare allows more scope for runaway errors,' Can you substantiate the insinuation that American healthcare is indeed laissez-faire or at least extremely close to it and that therefore this quote makes sense? If anything in a market context we would expect a greater degree of caution overall from providers of medicine and insurance.

For one, the federal government has no authority to tell doctors how to practice medicine. That's why when they wanted to keep doctors from prescribing drugs they didn't want prescribed during covid they had to work with the pharma companies and large pharmacies to shut down the supply. Also why off label prescriptions, like prescribing Luprin as a puberty blocker for teens, is allowed to happen. States do have the authority to regulate doctors, but in the absence of regulation at the state level (as we see in California) doctors can do as they please. As for lawsuits, those are coming (there are entire law firms being established in Texas for this purpose, so the personal injury lawyers think this is going to be huge) and some have already been filed. But the doctors themselves are probably protected by the fact that they can claim to be following best practices (as published by WPATH) so they were acting in good faith. The suits will likely have to be filed against the American Medical Association, American Pediatric Association, and American Psychiatric Association for failing to do due diligence on WPATH (which is an activist organization, not a medical body) before accepting their recommendations.

So ignorant of the facts. None of Barnes's work has been peer-reviewed. Her book is based on unsubstantiated anecdotes. It seems to contain a great deal of false information. Tavistock did have records. Tavistock's data was published in peer-reviewed journals. Her book was REJECTED by 22 publishers before being accepted by a relatively unknown publisher. What training or education does Hannah Barnes have in human sexuality, much less transgender issues? I could do investigative journalism on monogamy and heterosexuality and come up with the same kind of dribble Barnes produced. It is a bit hard to listen to Hannah as she struggles with cognitive dissonance; admitting all the wrongdoing that has been done, but still defending people and portraying them as being misguided rather than ideologically captured. She desperately tries to sit on both chairs and uses the "correct" pronouns but that isn't helpful.

I know what you mean. She's so keen to give everyone their due, but at the end of the day, a lot of wrong was done consciously, and people need to be held accountable, regardless of how that 'made them feel'. 'trying to sit on both chairs' is a great idiom.

At 12:55 Hannah Barnes says, "If you were reporting on a new cancer treatment and you said, 'Well where's the trial? Where's the data? We've actually got people here that it's harmed,' you wouldn't say, 'Oh, you hate people with cancer.'" The difference is that even the Cass Review has come up with vanishingly few people that have been harmed by gender-affirming care. In a study Cass herself commissioned, I think there were 10 detransitioners found in the whole of England? I am guessing the rates of injury and regret, not to mention life-altering side-effects such as second cancers caused by radiation and chemotherapy, are far higher in those receiving cancer treatments. Another difference is that we would not expect to see, in a review of a cancer treatment, the kinds of assertions that Cass makes w/r/t possible causes of gender dysphoria. At 5:25 Barnes claims the review is "completely evidence-based", but where is the evidence that trauma causes gender dysphoria, or that social contagion is responsible for the increase in assigned females presenting at gender clinics? The equivalent in cancer care would be a report that suggested some patients' cancer was inauthentic and did not require treatment because it stemmed from electro-magnetic radiation or had been contracted from a toilet seat. So yes, some of us tend to see, if not hate, then a kind of prejudice when we read such things. Oh, and lastly, the use of puberty blockers on children is not "new"; it has been occurring since the 1980s.

@B99994
@B99994 2 месяца назад
@@minstrelmusic-nm4wm Actually you’re right, that is an assertion I took secondhand from commentators I trusted but which, on closer inspection, appears to be an oversimplification. To what degree it is true I won’t know till I finish the review. Thank you for calling me out on it, since I’d rather make this mistake on RU-vid than in a higher-stakes situation. I have deleted that section of my comment. That said, I’m curious what you think about the evidence base for, for instance, social contagion as a cause of gender dysphoria. As I said, I’m only partway through the report, but on p118 I read the following: “Although it is certainly the case that there is much greater acceptance of trans identities, particularly amongst Generation Z, and this may account for some of the increase in numbers, this is not an adequate explanation for the overall phenomenon. Arguments that counter this explanation include: the exponential increase in numbers within a 5-year timeframe is very much faster than would be expected for the normal evolution of acceptance of a minority group […]” These seem like remarkable assertions. Is there any evidence to back them up? Since the review seems to almost completely lack embedded references it’s very hard to know, but the answer seems to be no evidence at all? Indeed, the next 4-5 pages seem full of such contentious assertions but I only counted one reference, to a study (Rawee et al) which did not concern children suffering gender dysphoria, but a vague notion of “gender discontentedness”, which seems to have been invented by its authors. I’m wondering, how does that strike you? Does any of this meet Cass’s own standards, and if so, how?
