WOOOOAH MWC IS GETTING WATCHES FROM SEIKO?!?! Freaking SEIKO!!!! WOOOOAH! That is freaking amazing Russell!!!! And I absolutely love this watch. Very handsome timepiece. 😍😍 also I’m so glad you clarified the 5 distinctives of the Seiko 5. I only found that out recently. Great watch! Great review!
Might be a little bit harder to do that; they don't currently have a comparable automatic movement to the original, and even if they did, it would cost well over $1k. I don't think they have a suitable mecha-quartz movement on hand either.
I showed this to my wife now. She said she doesn’t quite like it because it looks like something an astronaut would wear. Made me want to buy it instantly 😂
Saw the review last nite & today...the date of the release...I was at the GS Boutique collecting my SBGV245 just back from polishing in Japan. Tried on the new 55th Anniversary & immediately bought it. This is the coolest Seiko 5 I've ever seen. Extremely comfortable too. Definitely a winner. If it wasn't for the review I would have missed it!
This is a brilliant release. I have no complaints about this watch, but I do hope they spread the cost of redeveloping the case out by releasing a new limited edition of the blue version of the original. I don't know if you've seen it, but I really love that one. It's always a treat when your wife actually likes a watch too.
I love this! What a great reissue! They’ve nailed the look and it’s really exciting to imagine the potential of that case. Like you said, a Pogue reissue can’t be too far away, right 🙏 Even the packaging looks amazing too! I think I’d prefer a modern clicky bezel to go with the updated movement but you can’t have it all. What a great show 👏👏👏👏
I got one. The nice thing about the friction fit bezel and lack of chapter ring (polished rehaut) is that this is the first Seiko I’ve owned that doesn’t trigger my OCD. 😂
I tried it on my wrist last week. The case is lovely. I nearly bought it but ended up getting my second and so completing my seiko 5 sports peanuts collection.
Been looking for a vintage Seiko ever since I visited a little vintage shop in Camden Market a while ago. They had a couple of Seiko King Quartz and few Seiko 5's from the 60's and 70's. Something about the design just appealed to me. As soon as I saw this watch, I knew I needed to buy it, and buy it I shall...and probably the Pogue if it comes out next year.
I live in China and I purchased mine last week from the Seiko flagship store for CNY 2450. About 266 GBP. I must say that it’s really a nice watch and in my opinion it’s worth the price.
Great review. Just pre-ordered one. For anyone interested Arizona Fine Time is taking pre-orders. I only mention this because I was having a hard time finding a shop outside of the US still taking pre-orders.
Only started watching your channel in the last couple of months as I have started collecting watches again, must say I love the enthusiasm and the down to earth approach. Just love Casio (got a couple I used to own as a teenager and love them to bits, AE1200 Royale is on the wrist right now) and Seiko, well always wanted one.....this video inspired me to get a SRPK17, been damn hard to find one though as they as I was a bit late to seeing this and they have understandably sold like "hot cakes". Found a new one from a US website SEIKO dealer, it's on it's way, should be getting it in the next couple of days.....exciting....thanks MWC 🙂👍
I bought mine 2nd hand on eBay (never worn) for £300 and I couldn't be happier. Most of my watches are chunky divers and this is a lovely change for me. Felt a bit small compared to my other watches at first but it's actually perfectly sized. Love the bracelet as well but I ordered a milanese this evening to see how that looks. Would love for them to do the pogue too. 5 sports speedtimer chrono from the 60's/70's would also be amazing
love re-issues, particularly when they are not tiny. This is a great size, not oversized by todays taste, or that 2010's fad, nor undersized by modern taste like many watches from pre-2000.
Ohhh! Great video. I've already pre-ordered the watch a few weeks ago. Had a message to say it will soon be on it's way. After seeing review, can't wait!
Ah, so this IS it. Yea. I saw this on Seiko’s site about a month ago… still shopping through various shops online to get best deal for a pre-order. Definitely was instantly inspired to hunt for this one. My last Seiko was actually the equally retro Kamen Rider Seiko 5 anniversary model that came out earlier this year which revived a different 70s Seiko 5 model style (but not quite a true reissue).
@@ohhenry2 the actual price that I’ve found hasn’t fluctuated (it sits around $400-415ish USD) so what I’ve been trying to shop around is shipping differences. I haven’t settled on a pick just yet.
@@Paperfiasco Same here: Sadly, Francis & Gaye doesn't ship to the States, but I've found two Stateside retailers taking preorders. Still checking for the best deal.
Received mine two days ago ,tried to buy an original scratched 1968 version of ebay!! Glad I waited, absolutely fantastic re-model,can't stop looking at it and £350 bargain.
Mine arrived today and I finished adjusting the metal bracelet. It fits nice on my small wrist and feels comfortable. This is my second metal bracelet watch and my first series 5 Sports. My bezel is bi-directional unlike what Seiko USA says (uni-directional) in the specs. Love the groovy 60’s design and this watch is made in Japan. Cheers! 😊
I know I will have a lot of people who will disagree but I don’t like it. Definitely not a stunner, the dial looks far too busy. But great review as always.
$400, 'No' sapphire crystal, and a cheap pressed clasp. Come on Seiko. I love the case, the dial, and the nostalgia, so I'll definitely buy one.....when one of the China micro's knock it off, add sapphire, a NH36 movement, and sell it for $125.
Good show MWC.😊 HOPE your right about the pouge. My favourite Seiko ever, It sits proudly atop my entire collection. Don't wear it as much now as terrified of damaging the beauty. I will hold out buying this new release just in case the Pouge comes to fruition.
Russ, I love watching watch videos, and I am an insufferable Anglophile. So, I can’t help but smile as I watch your vids. And, of course, you have a perfect taste in watches, which is almost identical to mine! Thanks for the delightful diversion.
If we get a Pogue reissue, and that is a very big IF. it's not gonna be cheap. it would have to be a mechanical chrono. seiko's Chronos go for around 2k -3k referring to the automatic speedtimer. I doubt people would accept a solar or mecaquartz movement in the Pogue reissue as it goes against what the Pogue was. Also there in no chrono with the Pogue configuration in seikos catalogue as far as I know so this means they would need to make a new movement or modify something like the 8R48 perhaps. The way I see it the only way to make a successful reissue would be to literally bring back that movement used in the 6139 with a day date changing function unlike the original push change action...idk
I always wanted a Pogue, but this fits my black bezel/dial collection. I put down a preorder moments ago. Thank you for making me aware of this release!
Speaking of price increases and SKX clones, I wonder what your thoughts are on the SSK GMTs? More features but for £400 rrp I found it a bit too pricey. That being said i got mine for 40% off at Black Friday so I bit the bullet and I'm pretty chuffed!
That is an absolute peach of a watch! Makes me want to climb into a racing car and race Jackie Stewart around Monaco! Much prefer the old Seiiko 5 logo too! Love everything about this piece ❤❤
Great review Russ, definitely a stunner and it got your wifes seal of approval! I have been shying away from Seiko for sometime, but I might just add the SRPK17K1 to my collection.
I'd maybe prefer to see the pogue reissue... This one is cute and I love the old school retro vibe but the specs don't quite line up with the price tag. A few bucks more and sitting the price profile of the Oris Chronoris (second-hand market, mind you) and that has all the vibe, style, provenance, and performance you'd expect from a proper Swiss watchmaker. Throw a Forstner komfit style bracelet on it and you've actually got something very, very sweet on your wrist. I love the idea of the 5s but in the end they always fall a little short for me.
I own this watch now and want to warn the small wrist crowd. I have a 6.5" wrist and this bracelet will not drape or wrap properly. The thing was genuinely tight on my wrist and there were still gaps. There is not much flex or rotation in the links on this one at all. I have a very oval or rectangle shaped wrist so if yours is circular it would probably be fine. I don't care because I already had something in mind for it when I saw it but, it's something to think about.
I did jump on the pre order wagon to be honest as soon as I saw it. The crown is painful to operate, the hand winding is inoperable unfortunately but hey.. seiko samba time! I wish the crystal would have a bit more dome to it. The rest is awesome!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I should add that it was $175 USD in the states at Costco. I know the Seiko 5 sport line divided the collecting community, but at that price I couldn’t pass up. Costco also had the Seiko Tank in gold and a Hamilton field. Impressive/surprisingly good selection, imo!
Hello my friend! You’re talking about a watch with an SKX case decorated to look nice. This is an exclusive case, bracelet and dial. They’ve made one of these commemorating the 55th anniversary of the 1st Seiko Sports that looked exactly like this. Now the movement is the same but this one is special my friend
Cracking video, lovely to see unbridled enthousiasm. Where you and I clash over the re-purposed SKX, we now clash over shrouded lugs. I just can't deal with them. :) Which is a shame, because otherwise this is a lovely watch. For sure, it begs for a sapphire modification, but apart from that it's beautiful. Sadly, I won't wear it if I buy it. Shrouded lugs, you see.
The recessed crown was used for the original movement, ie. non-handwinding. How to wind it easily with the new 4R36 movement could be a challenge I think.
Bugger! Just when I was about to pull the trigger on a W10 vintage pilot watch… you had to show me this! I’ve been on the look out for a watch that was popular in the year I was born (1969) or there abouts… and this might be near enough. And the fact it has an anniversary this year might just push me over. I’m not usually a fan of this clickety-click sub dial, but this looks so gorgeously vintage, I think I could be persuaded on that point too! It’s all your fault #madwatchcollector - thanks to you my g-shock habit is quite bad/good. And now there’s this puppy! AAAAND… you drop in the idea of that 1969 model that may or may not be on the way next year! Gonna need another watch box!! 😂
Please Seiko reissue the Pogue ! I was in my early teens when I cast my first glance at that watch and I’ve never got it out of my thoughts. Great review of the S5
More than the watch I liked the way you presented it in the video. Very infotainment! The watch also is good better than the smart watches. Keep making the awesome videos. Love from India.
