Which Seiko 62MAS is best? SJE093 or SPB143...

This Watch, That Watch

The SJE093 is the newest Seiko 62MAS recreation. Since 2017 Seiko has made numerous versions of the 62mas. Some more expensive and specced out than others. I have had a few in my collection, because I really enjoy this design. The question I asked myself was: Is the SJE093 a watch I should add to my own collection....
Tune in to find out what I think and what I ended up deciding.
Cheers to everybody and thanks for supporting the channel.

Great analysis. I really like the SJE093, it's a beautiful watch. However, I'm with you. There is someting about the SPB143 that is truly special, and the grey dial is a knockout. You've made me feel better about my decision, and it's on my list. Thank you!

Very nice overview and review! I have a 62MAS, SLA017 and SJE093 love them all for slightly different reasons. The 6L37 movement seems to be quite accurate by many reports. Mine is running at +2 sec/day over the last month I've had it. The finish on the SJE093 is the same as the SLA017 which is not far off from grand seiko standards. I let the SLA017 go due to size.

That’s a strong point. The trend towards the original size is definitely the right way to go 😀

@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch From my research on seiko movements, the 6L is not slimmer version of 6R. The 6L is a modern production of their 4L movements which was designed to compete against swiss ones like ETA 2892. It was meant to be the mid range movement until they started introducing the 6R. The 6R is just an upgrade of the 4R.

Nice analysis and well-argued point of view. Thanks. I've had the SLA043 for a year+ on an aftermarket strap and enjoyed it a lot. Is it almost fancy enough to be a Grand Seiko? Yep. Does that compromise it's tool watch vibe? Not for me. I hike, swim, climb, and bang around in it because it is a tool watch -- even if it is better made than its progenitor. It looks gorgeous, the dial is brilliant, as is the bezel. Would I be happier with a watch that was more faithful to the 62MAS because its bezel did not line up, the movement was basic Volkswagen, and the finish was uninspiring? I've had a few of those from Seiko. They are fine, but gone now. Sure they were faithful. They were also boring. And the SLA043 isn't.

I had to return my SJE093. It had a little crack in the date disc that could be visible between 1 and 31. Just frustrating after the effort of finally getting one. BUT I have to say that I also returned a BB54 because of a misaligned lume pip.

Thanks for the video, it was interesting. I have a Seiko SPB149, and an SLA037. We can probably derive and apply a few things to the SPB143/SJE093 comparison you’re making, since the finishing of the SJE093 looks similar to the one of the SLA037. The SPB149 is basically the limited version of the SPB14x line. The SLA037 is the most high end of the 62MAS recreations - everbrillant steel case, 8L55 which is a Grand Seiko 9s85 movement, but less decorated, and not regulated+adjusted. I initially bought the SPB149 because I wanted the SLA037, but did not want to pay 6.5k for the SLA037. I’m going to try to make a fair comparison between the two by breaking it down between parts: - Price: $1200 vs $6500. After owning the SLA037, do I think the price is justified? Mostly yes. It’s my favorite watch, my daily wearer. Do I think the SPB149 gets you 90% of the SLA037 for one fifth of the price? Also yes. But these extra 10% make me love the SLA three times more than the SPB. - Case finishing: The SLA is heaps and bounds above the SPB. The case edges are sharper, the brushing on the top is nicer, the polished parts are flatter, the angles are sharper. Lug holes are also better finished (truly round) on the SLA, ovoid on the SPB. - Dial finishing: Both are very well finished and very, very similar. The sunray effect is similar, the “powdery” effect too. Both have stamped indices (a legacy of the original 6217, to prevent indices from getting loose while diving), but the indices on the SLA are much more nicely finished. The angles and flat surfaces are more defined, the lume has been added inside of the indices and not on top like the SPB, and they have a black mirror finish to them - it’s pretty incredible in real life. The lume is also incredible on the SLA (the best lume I’ve ever seen), while it is a bit meh on the SPB. - Chapter ring: The SLA has a polished chapter ring that is incredible to look at, it just reflects everything like a mirror. The SPB has a brushed chapter ring. These differences are there by design, but the result is there. - Hands: The hands finishing is comparable - the hands on the SPB have that half-brushed, half polished finish that looks super nice. The SLA has polished hands with bezels on both sides, which also look incredible. - Date window: the SLA has a frame around the date- that is the same frame used on some Grand Seiko models, with bead blasted bevels and polished top. The SPB has no frame, and the opening in the dial has bevels, that are not particularly well finished. The printing on the date wheel is better finished on the SLA - it is the same date wheel as on the Grand Seikos with an 9S85 - silver date wheel with small striations. The SPB has a white date wheel. The printing is also sharper on the SLA. - Crown: the SLA crown is signed and polished, while the SPB crown is unsigned and brushed. Finishing on the SLA is better, under a loupe the part where you grip the crown looks rough, while on the SLA it’s been polished and is smoother. - Caseback: on the SLA is just laser-etched, which is a let down vs. the embossed caseback on the SPB. I wish the SLA had the SJE embossed caseback. - Crystal: The SLA crystal is much nicer. It has a higher dome, which gives a lovely distortion at the edges, while the SPB is just slightly raised - this is a design choice, and just my preference. What’s different though, is the antireflective coating on the crystals. The crystal on the SLA seems to be 100% transparent at all angles, while the SPB seems to miss a tiny bit of light transmission, and becomes milky as you angle the watch. - Wearability: the SPB sits flatter on the wrist, it is almost a millimeter shorter in height than the SLA. The SLA sits taller because the caseback is higher vs. the position of the lugs than on the SPBN. - - Adjustments: The SLA has tighter tolerances than the SPB. There is no gap between the bezel and the case on the SLA, while there is a slight gap on the SPB. The bezel clicks are nicer on the SLA, with no play. It is a big difference in tactile feel. Bezel finish is superb on the SLA, with laser-etched numbers on the DLC-coated insert. On the SPB, the insert is radially brushed, DLC-coated and the numbers are filled with paint. - - Bracelet: the SPB149 strap is very nice, but the SLA037 strap is even nicer, it feels a bit more rigid. The buckle is better finished on the SLA. Buckle is similar. - Movement: The 6r35 in my SPB149 shows a LOT of positional variance. Also, I can’t seem to get the same deviation every day. One day it will do +2, the next day -3, with no perceptible difference in what I do with the watch (for example, 2 work days), which makes me think that temperature, or knocking the watch might affect it. In the SLA, I have between +0 to +1 s/day, no matter what, it is rock solid. The movement is not adjusted in multiple positions but shows little variance, from -1 to +2s/day across all six positions. I hope this helps. I agree that the price of the SLAs/SJE093 seems pretty crazy at first, but once you have it in your hand it becomes clear that these watches are in a different league. The problem is the perception of the brand - they do watches from $100 to $8000, so people don’t see the brand as capable of delivering amazing quality - also they have their fair share of QC issues on low/mid-tier watches… Rolex, for example, only has one quality level - very high, which helps to perceive the brand very positively. They’re also the best at marketing and creating interest & demand, but that’s another topic… All this to say… try to get your hands on a high-end Seiko - they’re really comparable to some of the Omega, Rolex &co. Thanks again for the video 😊

Thanks - Glad you enjoyed it Yeah. Watches are a subjective thing, so despite the SJE objectively being better on pretty much any standard (movement, design, finishing), - I still prefer the SPB. A few years ago you could get a Grand Seiko for $4k, now Seiko wants that for a 62MAS... As you said it might be because it is better finished with higher QC but its a tough ask given the movement. I agree with you that the SPB143 is simultaneously worse on paper but better on wrist. Sticking with your car analogy - The new mini might be fancier and sleeker but the old one will most definitely get you from Joburg to Cape Town without being put on a tow truck. That being said the SJE093 is a very pretty watch but I remain unconvinced that its worth buying. Have a great weekend!

I have a Seiko solar diver. My only diver. It looks great. I don’t dive and I’m sure 90+% of diver owners don’t dive either. I also wouldn’t use a GMT or chrono as intended. Give me a solid build, solid movement, stylish watch that tells the time. That’s all I need.

I was debating on getting the latest 62MAS reissue or the new BB54. Happy I went with the 54, because it's +2 consistently, has no flaws, the new clasp is amazing, and being a bracelet person, I appreciate the rivet style bracelet (to the dismay of many, I love rivet bracelets). The 60 click bezel is a beaut and a pleasure to use. You contrast that with the latest 62MAS's movement accuracy and lack of a bracelet, coupled with having less access to service centers and overall customer service, it's clear the Tudor wins. And it looks like a dive watch from the 50s, albeit with modern upgrades. Nonetheless, the latest 62MAS, like earlier releases, is another limited edition. It's a niche market. It will sell out. If I see someone with a 62MAS on their wrist, I know, like me, they are a wristwatch enthusiast. It is a beautiful watch (I have a crush on it). I'm sure the 6L37 movement will make most happy. It doesn't need a bracelet, and looks best on a tropic strap. Seiko would make the entire wristwatch community happy if they gave the 62MAS a complete Grand Seiko treatment by upgrading the movement, putting a modern bracelet in the box in addition to the tropic strap, and most importantly, drop the limited edition nonsense. It would be nice to see the 62MAS as a permanent model to compete with Tudor, Omega, etc. Great vid. Thx

Best discussion of 62MAS iterations I have seen full of keen insight and rare perspective. The SPB143 as you state steals the day because of its price point and honesty relative to its refined aesthetic and appeal. That said, the only Seiko I own is the Tuna 300m Seiko Prospex MarineMaster Tuna SBBN033 due to its unique charm and incredible Quartz accuracy at its price point. I just can't stand Seiko movements other than the NH-35 which are ubiquitous because they work as you say and being inexpensive, their wild fluctuation in accuracy is more or less permitted. To me, Seiko screws the pooch with their so-called higher end movements. In the $4K price point, I vastly prefer Tudor...pick one BB58 and not the 54, or Ti Pelagios an Omega or another with 'an accurate and regulated movement' where you get something for your dollar over and above a refined dial and case but crappy movement. Also, can't help but think of the appeal of perhaps the most iconic dive watch of all time the SKX-007 as you describe the 143...which fits the everyman characteristic you explain however on steroids. People look past the inaccurate, non-hackable, not windable movement in the 007 for its utter simplicity and durability and to me, still one of the best look diving watches that has ever been created.

I'm in agreement with you. I currently have a JDM SPB 143 and have worn it daily since purchase this spring. I haven't had any of the usual alignment complaints, nor the substantial regulation issues often commented on (perhaps as it is a JDM model?). The watch has admirably stood up to the rigors of sailing, diving and general life on the water with little signs of wear. Having owned several rolexs and a couple of omegas, I find it quite liberating to wear a very serviceable watch that I can wear without concern for it's well being. I always removed my watch before diving to clean the boat bottom, now the thought never crosses my mind. And the watch looks good on land as well. For all the commentary one sees bitching about the price of the SPB143 (?!?) I find it laughable. It's a 1k watch that does all (and more) that my 5-14k watches did without having to baby it. Cheers.

If seiko had originally realeased the 62mas in a 39/40mm case with aluminium bezel , with a bracelet and 6r movement , keeping to the original slim bezel design and dot lumepit and priced it at about $999 , it would of been seikos greatest triumph. They could have still done the sla versions for people with deeper pockets !!! My favourite is the sla043, i love the everbright steel , the deep blue dial that changes in the sunlight , and the baby blue seconds hand gives it a modern twist . And its 39.5mm case is perfect. Whilst the new version is the closest to the original , i feel the 38mm size doesnt work on my 7.5 inch wrist. Great if you have small wrists though.

I’ve always believed watch enthusiasts to be romantics, whether we acknowledge it or not. What you said about the SPB143 is exactly why. Sometimes appreciating a watch doesn’t have anything to do with logic, rather it’s the idea of a watch’s essence that we fall in love with. The higher end models might be more visually pleasing and well built successors of the 62MAS but the SPB143 is the true spiritual successor.

@@daveLin104 Too small. And while the 6L movement in the 093 isn't bad at all, it doesn't stack up to the 8L GS-grade Seiko movement which comes with 017. I am also OCD affected person, so the non-historically correct lume mark at 3 o'clock on 093 had been playing havoc in my head every time I looked at it. But that's me, others will differ, I'm sure. I wear 017, and keep 093 hoping one day it might increase in value to offload it. @@daveLin104 No problem, happy to do so. SJE093 holds true to its original size and that's a draw for may out there, myself included. But that only goes so far, if it doesn't feel right on your wrist, what's the point of paying $4k for a watch that will be sitting int the watch box for most of the time (again, guilty of it myself, mine has only been twice on my wrist). 38mm was an accepted size for the diver back in the 50es and 60es, but styles, sizes etc and what feels 'right' size on someone's wrist has changed over the last 60 years or so. Remember the late 90es and early 2000s with all that Panerai craze? 44mm was the norm for the most, with many springing to 47mm Fiddy etc. These days not so much, we are getting back to "normal" but that normal size now feels more like 39-41, anything larger or smaller, you start loosing followers and fans. In the end, my parole still is 'wear what feels right', historical size correctness and "true to OG" obsession starts wearing off quickly after the purchase. At least it did for me.

Well it is a difficult question to answer. I have a spb239j which I like but the sje093 is more looking like to the orginal both size wise and internal dial wise yes it is more luxurious but still has that vibe. The spb collection does not give me that history feeling that’s why I believe I will get the sje093

I hear you but, I'd pay $2500 not to have the Prospex X on the dial. Plus, my Blancpain/Swatch bezel lines up on 12 every time. I couldn't pay $1k for a watch that didn't.

On my wrist as I watch your video is the SLA043. I really like the 62 MAS. I had another 62MAS reinterpretation, SBDC051. The SBDC051 was my "tool watch", not that I do much 'tooling' these days. I agree that the Seiko name is associated with the common man, get it done, mass consuming ethos, and I love that, so much that I have had many Seiko's in my life. The watch on my wrist on my wedding day was a Seiko kinetic. The SLA043 was different. It highlights the best of Seiko (I am purposefully not mentioning Grand Seiko). The SLA series are not for mass consumption like Tudor BB or the Rolex Submariner. The SLA series are limited show case pieces (at least with the SLA017, 037, and 043). The mass Seiko consumer base will never know or care if these exist. Most will be satisfy with the SK5 series and would pinch their nose at the thought of paying $1k for the SPB or $4k for the SLA. As I grow more mature in my adoration for the watch hobby, this SLA will be my last Seiko.

100% agree with your commentary. The SPB 143 is one of the best Seiko Divers over made imo. Despite it's imperfections, the pros outweigh the cons and it's a pleasure to wear. I own the SPB 143 and SPB 213 and enjoy both. Have you seen the JDM SBDC163? It's a Royal Blue dial 62 mas. It looks amazing. I'm surprised it was never released to the international market bc it would give the SPB 143 run for it's money in terms of popularity. Cheers.

I kinda disagree, 3k for a Zaratsu polished Grand Seiko remake of a 62mas is not luxury, it’s still a tool the same as Tudor is a tool at its pricing over and above Rolex. It’s a stunning piece and fairly priced for what your getting, has notably more character than the spb143

I agree with you, the SPB feels like a iconic watch that has a purpose, that's authentic. While the SJE is more like a hyped "very special" very premium watch, that imo does not work at all, as it being more premium here means more authentic, means looking even more like a tool, so it gets a state of mixed identity that makes the watch feel off. Meanwhile, even if the SPB is objectively speaking in the movement department pretty overpriced. It is a much more authentic remake, as it is not ludicrously expensive, and it might be rought in the movement and around the edges, but so was the original tool watch it is mimicing.

In Japan they have the concept of “wabi sabi”. About embracing the imperfections. I guess that is relevant for Seiko? Hah! I have just had a parallel journey with the 6105 'Willard', except unlike you I found the SLA033 version was the one. Mainly because the case size, true to the original, is larger than the SPB237 and properly 'plump' (thank you Jeffrey McMahon!), unlike the slightly reinterpreted SLA Uemura version. Let's face it, the 6105 is all about the case... Great analysis, and you might enjoy Jeffrey for a refreshing perspective on the watch collecting obsession.

I have a 6R35 in a presage that was running +2 seconds a day, took it on a flight and now it’s running -30 seconds a day. Sent it to Seiko and they sent it back saying it’s fine. Have tried to demagnetise it myself with a very cheap demagnetiser and did nothing. I’m not sure if that is the problem however. Slightly fast is beautiful as you can just hack it every few days. Very slow is an annoyance. Will be taking it to my local horologist soon. Any other suggestions?

Great analysis. I wouldn’t consider changing out my SPB147 on an uncle seiko bracelet. Yes, it has a flaw, bezel pip not centered in the 12 o’clock triangle, but mine is surprisingly accurate and the branding of this model melts away into the dial which makes one focus on the aesthetic of the watch. Great analogy re. Volkswagen / Mini. I couldn’t agree more with you assessment.

Most valuable and informative 62 MAS video I have seen. Thank you. I have the SPB213 and I am interested in the new slim 62 MAS but I have a 6.1 inch wrist and I'm worried it will look too small. What is your opinion on size?
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback. 😊 Can't answer that for you - Size is a super subjective thing. The new SPB451 is 46.4 mm. That's a teeny tiny bit longer than a black bay 54. The SJE wears a lot like a BB54 (just taller). That would suggest a very wearable size for 6 inch wrists or below. You have to try to know for yourself.

Yet more good stuff! As a Seiko dive watch collector I've owned most of the SLA recreations and can attest to their quality. But I passed on this. Why? Because I never thought the 62MAS was an especially honest watch (simply a copy of Euro skindivers like the original Bathyscaphe). It wasn't an especially good watch either and so its celebration is to me false and unjustified (unlike the '68, Tuna or Willard). So I completely agree - buy the SPB, or wait for the smalll case variant that will surely come. But 'honesty' in watches is so important (and maybe worth a video?) and if I wanted a very good mechanical dive watch watch for ±$1k, I'd get a Citizen or Squale -

Mine is very accurate (especially while wearing it) and lines up like a dream. I have more watches than I should but this and my Baltic Aquascaphe in blue gilt see the most wrist time. Reliable work horses that look great and I just don't worry about them.

If you love the original 62 MAS and you value a vintage vibe above all, the choice is clear - SJE093. Seems to me that among these RU-vid reviews, the negative reviews for this watch are from those who, due to price / availability, cannot or will not buy the watch. But if your budget allows it, and your able to get one, not only will you thoroughly enjoy it, but also it will NOT decrease in value, being a limited edition / carbon copy of the most popular vintage Seiko!

I had the 143 and liked a lot about it, but the 093 is the choice here. But I’d take the 017 over both, due to the better size. Also, Seiko 8L movements perform much better than the advertised numbers provided by Seiko. The 6r movement is total shit though. To get the Superlative Chronometer shit out of my head, I own 3 Rolex Datejusts and a JLC Reverso Tribute 2017, and others. I almost pulled the lever on the latest "MarineMaster" SJE093, the Doxa Army... then realized, holy shit, will Seiko match/beat the Swiss (Seiko "meets" ISO 6425; since the 1960s, the Swiss pulled the plug on certifying non-Swiss watches!! I'm 70 y/o until Seiko produces a (Prospex-icon less, "dial labeled chronometer"), I'm done! BTW, Tudor's (first impression) resembles Hedy Lamar's homely, chubby sister... I've never liked homely, fat, ugly women! Tudor is not attractive to me; I owned a vintage model years ago but never wore it! The Seiko SJE093 (if the movement was "chronometer," perhaps glass-back is nice, but too expensive! MY SPB239 sitting in a box is good enough for me!

I have both the 093 and 143 and neither replaces the other. I still love my spb. The finishing on the sje is on another level. Seiko is conservative with their accuracy but I’m getting +/- 2 sec a week, the 6L37 is a luxury movement. A thin movement is difficult to produce. My spb was +/- 4-6 and then I dropped it so I had it regulated and now i’m getting almost the same timing as my sje. I feel like both watches are worth the money especially considering how limited the sje is but the spb is such good value and worth every penny.
