Seiko Marinemaster 300M (models SBDX001 & SBDX017) are often compared to the Rolex Submariners, being referred to as the "Japanese" Rolex Submariner. A title it rightly deserves. While it is not perfect and fails to measure up to the new Rolex Subs on several comparison points, it nonetheless offers superb design and superior manufacturing that approaches the level of Rolex. And One cannot ignore the tremendous value of the MM300 when compared to the Rolex, coming in at a mere 3rd price of a current Rolex Sub date.
The main issue for many people contemplating the MarinMaster is the large case size of 44mm and its rather portly over 200gram weight. This video will show how the watch wears on a smaller wrist. Through clever design Seiko has managed to make the watch wear much smaller so as to be wearable for people with smaller wrist sizes. Although still tall on the wrist and heavy, I have found the watch to be manageable for daily wear. Sticking up as far as it does makes it a doorway banger, but the weight can be mitigated by using a different band such as fabric, leather or even a rubber dive strap. A bit top heavy but I have not had issues that others report.
Seiko has discontinued the MarineMaster 300 and it's future is in question. Most Seiko experts point to a reissue under a different line as Seiko consolidates its model lines. The price has been steadily increasing over the last couple years since I began considering this watch. Going from $1500 + to current prices of nearly $2500 + for a NIB watch.
