I previously had to sell my MM300 SBDX001 to fund the Pelagos LHD purchase. I always missed it and although could never regret getting the Pelagos, I always wanted to get an MM300 again. I just managed to get hold of a new SBDX017 which has the following differences to the SBDX001 :-
Better/brighter lume
Prospex logo on crown (wish they didn't do that)
Mems technology
Diashield coating.
These two watches will definitely not leave my collection.

The French navy - the Marine Nationale - has been long known for the outstanding watches they issued to their combat- and on board divers. Some of the divers used the, now famous, elastic webbing found on their parachutes to make a single loop watch strap for their own watch.

Great comparison. Have watched this video before. Currently own a MM300 and have been considering the Tudor LHD for a couple years. I'm a lefty, so I keep going back to wanting one. Thanks for the review.

Great review and photography work. These MM-300 reviews finally persuaded me to get one. I have a Rolex Ceramic so the Tudor would have been redundant, but if I did not have the Rolex and had to choose between the MarineMaster and Pelagos, that would have been a tough decision. Tudor has really upped their game in the last few years. The Seiko MM-300 is a great value in premium divers. Only wish they'd have used a sapphire crystal instead of mineral glass at that price point. The size also worried me but it actually wears much smaller in real life. The Pelagos appears larger in diameter when held side by side but the calipers tell the true story.

You read my mind, I'm currently debating between these two exactly. I really love the understated, rugged design of the Pelagos, but the MM300 has many more interesting surfaces that play with the light and change hue depending on how light hits it. Not just in the dial and bezel, but all around the case as well. I'm afraid the Pelagos might not be very interesting to look at after a while because it's all matte all the time.

I think it's a matter of preference if you want an elegant diver that feels luxurious then get the marinemaster or the seamaster ceramic but if you want an understated tool watch get the Pelagos

Excellent! Came here searching for this comparison - it occurred to me, if I had "higher end" watches like the Tudor, would I even need to add the Seiko MM300 to my collection? Well damn it, I think I will! Want SLA017 too..... dang.

I just bought the new Marine Master 300 SBDX023 from my trip to Japan, also known as the SLA021. such a beutiful watch, very happy with my purchase. The new model has ceramic zerconium bezel and sapphire crystal glass from the hardlex of this model.

I don't mind the prospect logo. The price I purchased it at was equivalent to $3200AUD which is currently around $2500USD.

marine master is the most beautiful diver every made , Seiko have nailed it and they will milk this design like Rolex milk it's Sub.

@Uno Bassman somewhat inspired but not a copy of a sub, by your logic any dive watch with a black dial, black bezel and round hour markers are copies of a submariner. The marinemaster is different enough from a sub due to the following: crown @ 4 o'clock, monoblock case, hands designs that are different and imo far more refined from the submariner's hands with its brushed and angled polished finish.

@Uno Bassman oh and another thing, even though the marinemaster's bezel is not a ceramic bezel but seiko came up with the glossy bezel look since the year 2000, rolex only came up with the glossy bezel in 2007-08 when they changed to a ceramic bezel. So is rolex copying seiko's glossy bezel look as well???

@Uno Bassman in a way it is but to me it's different enough, remember that the mm300 came out in 2000-01 which did not look too much like the pre-ceramic sub. It does look like the SubC but the SubC only came out in 2007-08. Compare the submariner from the era with which the mm300 was launched, i.e. submariner 16610 vs the sbdx001, they're quite different imo. The seamaster bond from the same era apart from the blue color actually look more like a submariner.

@@lettuce1305 The current MM300, though the "marinemaster" name has been removed from the dial, now sports a ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal (unfortunately) and a couple of internal improvements as well.

marinemaster has no rival! I currently have a rolex ceramic submariner, I had a professional ceramic seamaster 300! and currently I also have a Planet ocean! and what the marinemaster transmits to me has not made any clock! it is wonderful the finished the box, the structure a magnificent piece! for me in its segment it has no rival

some say the Orient saturation diver is close to the mm300 quality wise and really shines pre loved as it's half the price of a pre loved mm300. cheers

mulberrybush1967 filmfan! I have not seen that piece in the metal and Ike it apart from the lower reserve indicator on the dial. The magic of the MM300 is a bug once bitten, is hard to forget.

+Jatthew Mackson I have a black dial osd coming in. It's the power reserve indicator I really like, makes it different to most other diver plus it's solid build. I got it for £610 with a extra strapcode bracelet with ratcheting clasp with it. mm300 pre loved is next for me. pre loved mm 300's in the uk seem to run around £1,400 pre loved. Cheers

I think the Marinemaster is outclassed in every way here. On the Pelagos you get an in-house movement with a 70 hour power reserve, all titanium construction, matte ceramic bezel with awesome gimping for solid control, the stepping on the dynamic dial, a COSC certification, all while flowing together seamlessly. The Marinemaster is very blocky looking, cheesy looking band, dial and bezel. The dial is too small while the bezel and case is too big. Not good flow and form. For the money you get Rolex fit and finish with some materials they don’t even use on their Subs. I personally can’t stand Rolex Subs, but for some reason the Pelagos is a working mans watch that has a classy look.

I greatly prefer the Seiko, but, I do like this titanium Tudor; it has its own character, and a good one at that. It's the first one that doesn't scream "buy ME if you can't afford a Rolex!"

Excellent video. The MM300 is a very interesting watch. It's big, but, looks small, even, in my 6.25" wrist. The crafter blue strap is perfectly made for this watch. Absolutely transformed. So easy and comfortable to wear. Rugged and look different.

I have Tudor heritage 41 and marine master sla21 and marine master is better in everything although it constantly loses 6 seconds a day it compares and probably beats the submariner too it just has so much value.

I think we can all agree that these are two fantastic watches and purley down to personal preference which to buy. I already own this Seiko and I know that you would have missed it. i would never sell mine and it will be passed down to my son. I am also considering the Pelagos to add to my collection however my choice would be the beautiful blue colour with standard crown.

Great video- I currently own the sbdx017 and have been tempted to sell it for the blue Pelagos but I worry the titanium will not age as well as steel. Although the mm300 is polished and brushed so beautifully I feel like it will age well and scratches and marks will improve it, not so sure on the Pelagos... but I love the Matt blue dial and bezel... decisions decisions. Thanks for your informative video anyway, you’ve made me reconsider the Tudor watch 🤦🏻‍♂️😁

FatSamEIE thanks for your comment. I don't find that the Pelagos scratches that bad. If you love the mm300 then trust me don't sell it and save for the Pelagos. I love the Pelagos and for the money it is the best out there.

The blue version Pelagos is my favorite, I would really struggle to buy the MM300 over it, and I love Seiko and pretty much despise everything about Rolex.

It’s a shame that Pelagos’ seem to lose value, whereas Rolexes only seem to go up. The Tudor strikes me as a modern and better interpretation of the Submariner. I think some people aren’t ready for titanium at the higher end of watches, although, they do mark rather easier than Stainless steel, I guess and that might be the issue.

@@itsallrobbish it's all because of brand image, many people buy a rolex just because it says rolex on the dial. Don't get me wrong, rolex makes fantastic watches but quality wise they're not 2-3x better than a tudor yet 2-3x the price.

I have a pelagos LHD, the bezel is slightly out at 12oclock and actually stopped working for no good reason after 3 years. it was still under warranty and was fixed immediately. I caught my pelagos on my door handle in my bedroom after 6months of ownership. Wasn’t best pleased with myself. Now I don’t have a marine master, but looking at the sheer thickness of its case id be catching that everywhere I went. The pelagos is a beautiful watch to wear and admire however the finishing on the seiko is real treat on the eyes. To other marine master owners, how does the large case wear on your wrists taking your own wrist size into account?

Why does everyone say that the clasp on the MM300 is Titanium? On the back of mine, it is clearly stamped Stainless Steel -B.

Even at the currently elevated prices of the Prospex/MM300, it's still a great bargain relative to most watches. Frankly, I think they should just offer it only on the rubber strap and drop the price a few hundred bucks.

The pelagos just looks so pedestrian compared directly to an MM300, its like parking a golf next to a Porsche. The golf may be a better tool but which would you rather own?

MM300 no doubt. It will be hard for me to keep the Pelagos because Seiko is just a better watch overall. I'd sell Tudor and get a nice chronograph or a pilots watch of the same price.

My only problem with the marine master is it ridiculously thick. I know it’s not actually that much thicker then the Tudor but it wears wayyyyy thicker. I tried one on it felt like it was an inch off my wrist

I fail to agree with you. The bottom half of the case just melts into your arm so it wears like a watch that is half or 2/3 at most as thick as it really is. When you initially try it on it might jolt you if you are used to thin watches but after a day or two your eyes realize the watch wears significantly smaller and thinner than it is. In fact, it wears like a slightly chunky 40 mil watch. There is a perfection to how the design elements just work together to provide a very exceptional ergonomic effect that is not easily comparable to anything else. It also has another kind of magic in that it reflects every Seiko diver you’ve ever owned back to you. I won’t compare it but I will say that Seiko has created a masterpiece to honor its lineage that stands on its own league beyond comparison. The watch is a profesional diver’s dream and it is all about that business. It is mesmerizing, subtle, subdued and yet boldly in your face.

Pelagos is the only decent Tudor... the rest feel like Rolex homages - which cheapens them to me. The Pelagos bracelet is my favorite on any watch. The LHD is great looking and I would love it since I can't stand crown bite on the back of my hand. MM300 is just too heavy and clunky for me - albeit I love the look and respect it's place in horology.

I like the Seiko more... but no way I'm spending $2,000 on a Seiko. I enjoy my Seiko Monster, Turtle, and SBDC051... but the new SLA021/SBDX023 is selling new for $3,000... insane.

Seiko is a vertically integrated company. You can buy a $100 Seiko 5 or a $2000 Seiko MM300 or a Grand Seiko diver. To each their own, but I actually enjoy that. The fit and finish (as well as the movement) are superb and the average Joe or criminal will be none the wiser about whats on wrist. A watch lover (the demographic for these pieces) would give props seeing this on anyones wrist.

LHD all the way (Original design from the same company, awesome Marina Nationale history). Seiko looks amazing but i don't like homages (People should accept what happened in 1953 with Rolex and Blancpain, after those designs the rest are homages).
