5 Arguments for Buying the Seiko MM300 Over the MM200

Even though the Seiko MM300 (SBDX025/SLA023) is more than double the cost of the MM200 (SBDC125), you could make 5 arguments for getting the more expensive MM300: Better lume, more accuracy, better design, less risk of flipping, less risk of experiencing the Lay's Potato Chip Effect, Accumulation Rot, and Watch Anhedonia.

There is no ‘peace of mind”. The need for new shiny objects just won’t end, I hope it doesn’t. I’m a dive watch guy and I just bought a Laco 55mmx65mm remake of the original ww2 pilot watch. I’m crazy, I get it. But the passion and excitement this “journey” gives me is one one the cleanest, least damaging obsessions I’ve ever had. So be it.

Interesting video McMahon. I'm unsure how we can ever feel content with our collection's whilst comparing how one watch is "superior" to another, particularly when that usually equates to spending money on more expensive models, that's the trap. I think to find any type of peace for me it breaks down into the following areas; keeping a perspective on your "hobby", being content with what you have, not feeling the need to compare with others, and lastly not focusing on what you don't have. All easier said than done unfortunately.
@chi-towncalifornia5916

The MM200 is nice and all, but let’s not pull any punches here. It’s no MM300. This is an irrational hobby, fellas. Two MM200s ≠ one MM300. Though I don’t know what you sold, I’m nevertheless glad you consolidated your redundant watches into an MM300, which you can enjoy more often. As crazy as this sounds, McMahon, you could cover all the bases with just the MM300 and the 42mm Willard. You have the high end finishing, hi beat movement and colorful blue dial of the MM300; and the black dial and slightly smaller 70s turtle design of the 42mm Willard to complement it. The MM200 is neither fully actualized nor different enough from the 42mm Willard to justify its place in your fleet. You own an MM300 now, McMahon, so do what Marie Kondo recommends. Thank the MM200 for its service to you, and move it along so it can occupy the wrist of the next aspiring future MM300 owner.

Jeff; I have commented on many of your videos over the years as I feel our anxiety and pain is similar. It seems price is always a determining factor and a cause for settling on a watch when we really want something else. After 7 years of doing this I’m closer to having 5-6 watches I really don’t want to sell. Not necessarily because I spent more but because now I know what I like in a watch. But spending more did give me watches that I am happier with. I want a Sinn 104 now but I’m not ready to spend the $ yet. I started thinking about less expensive options and caught myself. I’ll wait until I feel better about the $1800 expense and will do it knowing I’ll be happier.

Personally I think the mm300 is too thick. The bracelet links look long too. The best thing is the beautiful blue face. At nearly 3k, does it compare to a omega at 5k . Not for me, I actually think the 1k seikos are the best models. They are well built , reliable and offer a fair bit for the price. I'm not sure if I would invest more than 1k in a seiko. While I love the brand, they don't offer the same desire as some of the Swiss brands. That said are the omegas worth the 5 to 6k they are now asking for the PO and Seamaster 300 ? If your going to spend 5 to 6k on a watch you better be sure it's the one for you. Once you've experienced a higher end model, then it's almost impossible to go back, with any real satisfaction. I honestly don't think the difference between a 1k watch and a 5k is worth the extra outlay in terms of quality and value for money. But if you have a small collection , then a higher end grail is more understandable. The most important thing is buy what you like at a price your happy to pay , and it should work out hopefully !!!
@JamesandRibble
@JamesandRibble 2 года назад
I found the opposite. Had a Seamaster 300 which I sold and replaced with Seiko spb051. Much prefer the Seiko. The Omega sculpted bezel was a pain to use, the non tapering bracelet adding unnecessary weight where you don't want it, and (subjectively) I grew to hate the sceletonised hands. I funded the Omega in part by selling a MM300 SBDX017. how I regret that now. Going to have to buy the new generation MM300 back, probably in black. Quality wise the new MM300s are Omega's equal in everything aside from the bracelet and clasp. The Seiko case finishing and polishing is superior. Omega also give you too much box and packaging which for a tool dive watch detracts from what it should be all about.

Two things: First do you ever consider something besides a dive watch? Dive watches are great and was almost all I wore for about 15 years, but the reality was I never used the bezel for anything. I had watches that the bezel didn't even turn, because there was so much grit in there. At some point I started buying "Field watches" and they are pretty great. No bezel generally, but that allows a larger more legible dial, they typically are lumed almost the same. My 59 year old eyes thanked me! Just thinking it might be worth a shot? 2) Maybe something besides Seiko and Tudor? Watching you obsess over this Seiko or that Seiko; it's kinda painful sometimes! 🤣
