I’m sitting on 3 mint OM’s and I don’t have the heart to sell them..... yet. When they get into 1000+ range maybe. My watch that fills this gap though is my SRP229. I loved the watch so much after I got it, I bought 4 more when you could get them for 200 bucks with the idea I’d replace one every decade. It is literally the watch I would have designed if I was in charge of a watch manufacturer. It’s perfect in my eyes. I’m still on my first one I bought Dec 2012. It’s had a few different bracelets, but like you I always go back to the OEM one. I rebrush it every 6 months or so, and I don’t think I’ll be retiring it for one of my new ones anytime soon. Now I’m sitting on 4 BNIB ones and they are creeping up in value. But the one with the dings and little flaws on it, means more to me than a new one. Its more valuable.... to me. It’s travelled all over with me. Chopped lots of firewood. Built decks. Fixed cars. Played hundreds of rounds of golf. Actually scuba dived. You name it. It’s probably why it runs 2 minutes fast. Lol. All the banging and swinging. I’ve thought of regulating or servicing it. But the 2 minutes is part of its character. Makes me interact with it every day of two. I have 80+ pieces. And it gets 50-60% of the wrist time. It’s never in a display case. It’s on the nightstand, on my workbench or on the kitchen counter always ready to go. It will be on my wrist when I get married this summer too, not one of my expensive pieces. And at 45 yrs old I’ve had a lot of time to collect my grails. Be it watches, cars or gadgets. It is the one constant that’s hasn’t been traded out over the last 8 years. I thought getting my orange bezel Planet Ocean Chrono would finally kick the Seiko to the curb, but all it is is my watch box center piece, and it gets limited wrist time. Its a beautiful watch, but it isn’t ‘me’. I fell pretentious wearing it. I set it down gently after I wear it. Inspect it for 10 minutes after it strikes a door jamb. The SRP229 takes its licks and I don’t even take a second glance. I toss it on the night stand. Haphazardly Stuff it in my pocket when I need to remove it for an activity. And it’s never let me down. Like me, it’s been beat down a bit by life, but still manages to carry on. It’s utilitarian, humble, and reliable. What I at least strive to be. I identify with it. And everyone I know, is used to seeing it on my wrist. We went on a 2 week vacation last summer, and 50 kms out of town, I’d realized I left it on the kitchen table as I took it off to hitch the trailer, load firewood in the truck etc. Damn straight, we turned around and wasted an hour in fuel and time so I could return home to get it. There’s no way I was going 2 weeks without a watch..... especially my trusty Seiko war horse. Great video. Thanks.

I have a Seiko 5 baby monster, white face and love it. Fits great. Had for 10 years bought new. Had a lot of desk diver scratches on the band, so I recently replaced the watch band with a Endmill bracelet. Gave the watch a whole new look, and is very comfortable to wear. Received several nice complements on it over the years!

My Seiko Sportura SNA451 is the one watch I would keep if I had to sell or otherwise get rid of my collection. Had it for 12 years and it's still my favourite watch. Quartz chrono with sapphire glass and orange seconds hand and accents. The case shape and design are beautiful.

I love the story behind watches. I know I have a few. And your story is great. As for longest? Mostly a tie between my two Doxa divers.....my orange Professional and my blue Caribbean GMT. Had those since 2006. And I still wear them. And I still love them.

"Maybe you already have your grail watch." Great point Rob. I thought my SubC was my grail. In actuality it is my skx009. In the past 10 years it has been through 3 rubber bands, 4 bezels springs and gaskets, a new main spring (dropped it on a tile floor) and has seen life, death, blood, sweat and tears at work. It would've been cheaper to purchase a new watch as opposed to replacing the main spring, but I just couldn't let this one go. Awesome Monster BTW! My wife gifted me a 2nd gen black Monster about 5 years ago too!

Same way you feel about your orange Seiko Monster, I feel about my Orient Defender. Completely the same. I can tell you all the specs by heart and all the adventures I had with that watch. And no matter how many watches I buy, I always go back to the Defender sooner or later. I wear that watch at least 4 out of every 10 days on average. It is so versatile, since, unlike the Monster, it can be worn in any situation. I knew it is a watch for me the moment I saw it on a picture and it didn't dissapoint in metal. I especially like the fact that it is not well known, it is underdog, doesn't have a rotating bezel, which means it is outside of the diver watches craze, it is not among the big sellers in the Orient lineup, and there are not so many places you can buy it, which is great. And I also like its' cult like status, its' subdued, not in your face nature, and the fact that you can't place it in any category, since it belongs in none of them and in all of them. Mark from Island Watch should start offering sapphire crystals for the Defender and the Gen II is now out offering green dial and hacking and hand winding. All of this is also great. I can talk about the Defender for hours. But, I feel I should stop now.

Like this . Love watches with meaning and they don’t have to be expensive it’s the connection that counts . People walk different paths in this hobby and it’s everyone’s right to do as they please however it kinda leaves me cold when I see someone showcase four or five modern Rolex’s as their collection and fail to mention pieces that they purchased when they started getting into watches at a lower monetary level as if they don’t matter. It such a pity i like giving everything a run out regardless of price..

I have two Tag 1500’s, one from 1992 and the other from 1997 that I’ll never part with. I still love both of them. A “grail” watch doesn’t have to be super expensive. That’s silly. It’s all in what you enjoy.

Happy new year buddy! I got into Gshocks this past year because of you and now have ENTIRELY too many! I will soon likely be selling many after finding a new favorite the perfectly sized GBA-8XX AND GA-8XXs!! I still love my Monsters tho including the bought new for around $150 at the time first and second gens like yours. Had I known there would not be any watches as cool (or at least the gen 2 dials) I would have bought and held a few (400% value increase?) no other inexpensive watches I am aware of have gone up in value like the Monster. I own one of every gen 3 hoping that trend continues and just because the dials (metallic are best improvement but hope they return to the teeth shaped indicies!)

I found out about the monster way too late now they're harder to get not that I won't get one but I get distracted by so many others. I absolutely love the Orange Monster and that Jade monster from the Japan Market is really sharp. I was out of the watch hobby for a while I never did get a skx mostly because I could find stuff better suspect when you get into that price range I never bought one but I believe the monster is topshelf I'm going to have one.

Never saw the allure of the orange monster, to be honest. That's probably a good thing, since I wouldn't buy it at its current prices. If I saw a slammin' deal on one, maybe I'd get one, since my thoughts very well might change if I handle one and I could always flip it if I still didn't like it. I gravitated towards the Samurai instead. Glad you like your monster though. Looking at my own collection, it's hard to think of getting rid of any of the them, but I do wonder from time to time if those feelings will change or if there's one watch among them that will just never leave no matter how many of the others come and go. Food for thought for 2020, I guess!
