There's so much more to watches than hype. To me, watches have always been tied to travel and adventure. In a new HODINKEE series called "Watches In The Wild" I explore the many facets of watch culture around the globe. In the first episode, I'm hitting the streets of Bangkok to discover the connection between Seiko and Thailand and why there are so many Thai limited-editions.
Sure, other countries have their own limited-edition Seikos (here in the US we have the Prospex SLA053 and SLA059), but they’re few and far between. Thailand was doing LE drops years before it became trendy. And to a Western audience, many of these pieces remain obscure. So we thought it was the perfect launching pad for this new series.

It was getting boring those shows with millionaires talking “Rolex, Patek, Rolex, Patek, …” Now we are talking about genuine watch collecting. People who collect because like watches, not just because social status.

Cole Pennington represents the best of what Hodinkee has evolved into. He's knowledgeable without coming off as pretentious. It's really refreshing to see. I can't wait to see what he does in the next episode.

Thank you for starting this series with Thailand and Seiko. Myself was lucky in 2007 when I started watch collecting to find a Blue Monster at MBK at the retail price. For your next episode, I remember this australian gentleman from the Jatujak week end market where all the vintage watch collectors gathered ( it was the good time then around 2011-2012 ).

I agree that this was just an excellent video, from concept to execution. As this video shows, if you spend any time in Asia, it's just wrong to think of Seiko as an underdog! Again, very well done. Keep this series going!
