Back in 2017 I posted an unboxing of Seiko's new release and modern incarnation of the legendary 62MAS. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict and several technical problems, I was unable to complete the review of the SPB051, even after spending many weeks getting to know the watch. However, thanks to my new partners at WatchBox, anything is possible and when I asked if I could review it, they of course said yes!
Finally, almost 2 years later, I have the opportunity to share my feelings on a watch that caused such a fuss with the ardent Seiko diver fans, and do it justice with a lifestyle review.
Was it a big hit or a mistake? Is it worth the $1000 price tag? How does it fit in with an already oversaturated Prospex line? Why is this watch so important, and why are Seiko dive watches so highly respected? There’s quite a lot to talk about here, so let’s dive in!

What a GREAT production. This has been one of the best reviews. It's rising up the bar. I loved the music, the two and even three camera story telling you got going on. For the viewer it is pleasing to see the mix of landscape, architecture, and the rugged ships AND the watch. Great, great video.

Regularly watch the channel but somehow missed this episode. I bought one of these about 9months ago - huge discount at one of the big jewelry chains who were liquidating their Seikos. I love it because it is restrained, I wanted a diver but not a "look at me I'm wearing a humungous diving watch" type watch. Its been absolutely fantastic so far. Great vids - keep up the good work.

Awesome as ever, infact imo, the content is becoming more and more professional and so long as 'everyday' watches are still covered occasionally, I fully embrace this upgrade. Your enthusiasm has me getting quite excited one minute and then serious the next lol, once you start talking about the pro's and con's. I love Seiko and hope they do not get too expensive in the future generally as some of their latest releases have been quite hefty!

Enjoyable review. Just ordered the last one from Shopping in Japan. Not an inexpensive watch but I've always wanted a high quality Made in Japan Seiko dive watch, so my wish has been made real. Like you I just love the brand. In fact I remember my Dad had a Seiko watch when I was a kid (about 50 years ago!), I think it was an early quartz watch based on my blurry memory of it after all these years. I'm looking forward to it's arrival.

Just received the 053 blue dial variant yesterday. Outstanding watch. I had a turtle and flipped it, just not for me. This is the Seiko diver I've been waiting for. I put it on a strapcode bracelet. They make them to fit these models now. Looks wonderful! The price is very reasonable right now as well. Great video. Cheers, Matthew

@@theurbangentry yeah, figured you still do your own autonomous watch review things at home in New York (the content of which I personally admire, highly), while simultaneously producing videos from the WatchBox team using their watches as focal items (which is a cool way to learn about a LOT of horology-related procedures and know-how, while getting one's hands on watches which are dementedly priced and providing due reviews). Just keep doing what you're doing, Teeg!

Well, another great vid, as usual. I really like the whole "on location" vibe with the naval yards and everything. Would like to see more of that in the future. The Seiko itself looks very nice, but being a huge Seiko fan myself, I have to agree, at least on the surface, that there seems to be more overall inspired design in watches like the Samurai, which aren't quite as expensive. Thanks and take care, man. Cheers.

I went for the SBDC055. One of those may have the flair you’re after. Thanks for the great video. There’s something really nice about sharing appreciation for Seiko watches that I thoroughly enjoy. I just revisited this video. The composition is a bit weird. You are very positive and complimentary towards the watch until right at the end, where you say you don't really like it.

Another great review TGV. After initially running at -2s a day, mine has now settled in at -0.1s a day, so it's as accurate as my F91W and GW5610. The lume is bright and long lasting, even better than my SKX. Surprisingly, it wears smaller than my SKX as it 'appears' to have a lower profile. I didn't like the bracelet at first, but it has grown on me and now I love it. For daily use, I wear it on a Seiko silicon strap. This one is a keeper

Kudos for an honest review. One hesitation I had with the partnership with the WatchBox was a potential lack of objectivity; having a robust and varied list of negatives asserts your objectivity and lets us know your integrity is intact. Also - thanks for the ‘drilled lug’ shout-out. People (for some reason) hate drilled lugs... people who wear watches and change straps LOVE drilled lugs.

I have one, bought it new when I first heard about and have been absolutely in love with it ever since. I'm considering getting it PVD coated in all black to put the "Me" into that watch. I have only one gripe about the watch: Every time I look in my watchbox to see what I want to wear that day, it always wins and the other watches are getting upset.

Thanks for the video Tristano!👍 I was so excited to see it come up in my feed as I had been waiting on this review since you first previewed it back in your NYC office. I agree with the points that you have raised about this watch although I actually like the bracelet, its a step up from the norm and I like how it flows. Not having a signed crown though is such a let down when you consider the Sumo has a signed crown plus it’s case angles are loved by so many Seikoholics like myself and for half the price. My main issue with this watch however is the fact that we are still seeing alignment issues with this piece 🤦‍♂️ a near $1k watch and we’re still seeing misaligned chapter rings...cmon Seiko. This reason alone is hindering me from buying it really. It’s so weird as I’ve never seen a Samurai or Monster for that matter with alignment issues so why see it on a watch that’s double the price 🤔 Anyway delighted to finally get your thoughts on the watch 👌 thanks again.

This, with the default rubber strap has been my go to watch for my street runs for over a year now. Ridiculously easy and quick to twist the bezel and start timing my run plus it's extremely legible with my arm bobbing around. With an LCD watch or chronograph I'd be fumbling with buttons or squinting my old eyes at the counter. After I'm done it heads straight into the shower with me and gets great compliments at dinner gatherings thereafter.

Good evening TGV, thank you for your review and your unbiased opinion. I have to agree that Regarding the design Seiko has some more interesting watches in store. Personally I like the crown at the 4o‘clock position when it comes to Seiko. So upgrading from the SKX the SPB087J1 May be my choice.

Seiko does not place the crown at the four position on the majority of their diver range; it is quite visibly offset and does not align to the four o'clock as Citizen and Orient divers do.

Hello, great and fun video as usual. I'd like to ask you a question: What are your thoughts on Edox watches? I've been seeing them and they look beautiful. Great video TGV, amazing how Seiko's have become appreciated. Around 10-12 years ago you could pick up any of the 70's Seikos (Pogue, Helmet, Kakume, Bullhead etc) for less than 100 pounds !!! - this is a nice piece, but I find it difficult to spend that kind of money when a Samurai is around 350 NEW ! , and not that different in appearance. So disappointed at the price of the62MAS reissue, and don't get me started on the 6105 reissue - I often wonder how they are worth considerably more than a 2nd hand late Speedmaster Moon ?

I’ve been dying for one of these since they came out. The only reason I haven’t pulled the trigger is because of the size. I know tgv and others have said that it wears small, but my 6” wrist can only handle so much watch. An SKX is pretty much my max. The longer lug to lug of the SBDC makes me nervous.

I bought the bracelet separately and i was also “underwhelmed”, for the reasons you’ve mentioned already and i feel that the bracelet does not integrate well. Other than that i really like it a lot. You should try it on a (olive) Perlon Strap. Looks amazing!👍🏼 Cheers from Middle East TGV! Keep up your good work!

Thank you Mario, If I had to choose, I would go blue too, they nailed it in terms of the hue of blue IMO Sending back cheers from Philly! Best regards, TGV

An excellent review, TGV. It combines all those elements including context, history, cultural background, relationships to similar watches and associated wearing 'environments' to make the complete package. And immeasurably superior product compared with a robotic regurgitation of specs.. Great Ravel, too.

T-Great review. I did a video of why I sold my Breitling Superocean II 42 and KEPT the SPB051.
