In this episode of Gentry In A Jiffy, I explain how to deal with a watch snob’s animosity, and the delusions of grandeur that encourage them to deem most watches beneath them.
Anyone with a sense of decency and self respect knows that talking badly about people you have never met is classless. But how about when it comes to watches? Unfortunately, we live in a world in which many insecure people cannot control themselves when it comes to how they treat others online. The watch hobby has not escaped the downside of social media, and many spew their toxicity on those who ironically love and enjoy the same hobby.
But don't despair! These watch snobs are in the minority and most of what they claim is absolutely wrong. Today I discuss the top 10 things that watch snobs are completely mistaken about. I also share how I deal with the negativity I personally face within our shared watch hobby. Just because they can't stand to see you happy, does not mean that we have to lower ourselves to their level. Join me as we forever take this love for watches positively onwards and upwards!

Good points, TGV. May I suggest one more: the emotional connection you can have to certain pieces, expensive or not. An example: Earlier this year, my father passed away. We were very close, and I miss him badly. When my mother and I were going through some of his belongings I came across a square Orient quartz in a drawer. It was a gift from my mother, bought in the early 1980s, and the style is definitely a true child of that era. My plan is to have it fixed. Then I will put it on a nice leather strap and wear it with pride. In remembrance of my dear Dad. I call that horology.

I'm a 18-year-old Brazilian and have loved watches since I was a little kid. Unfortunately, lots of great pieces are not sold here, because even a Seiko SKX costs the same as the population's average income. As a guitarist and a watch guy, let me assure you, this advice applies to many hobbies/passions. The best bang for the buck in guitars, is $600-1100. Most snobs are there to boost their ego. If you ask them about the watch, they will say the price of the piece first. And a person who loves watches will tell you how less you have to spend to buy a good timepiece. Before you know, you too are infected with the love for watches. Prices are just numbers!
@Seele2015au
@Seele2015au 5 лет назад
Mezbaul Alam Right on! The price of a product is not related to the owner's appreciation of said product. Among my vintage watches I have a 1970s Ricoh mechanical watch that I bought for peanuts, but it's really interesting for having a Durowe movement, probably still built in Pforzheim. When Timex bought Laco/Durowe, Timex kept Durowe's electronic movement section, and sold the mechanical movement section to INT, part of Swiss Ebauches SA. Quite curious as Ricoh had full access to Takano's in-house movements, so it makes a very fascinating watch, and it has nothing to do with the amount of money I spent on it.

@@theonlyredspecial Not only RU-vid but in real life as well, and not just limited to watches. I live in an area which has gone very fashionable - and unfortunately very snobbish over the last decade or two. The streets are full of Bentley, Maserati, Porsche SUVs,, even seen a Rolls-Royce SUV or two, not to mention Ferraris and such, but the drivers skills are mostly quite feeble and look at me like a worm that just crawled out of the dirt for driving a cheap car, I actually got almost hit plenty of times. The fact that I had been a test driver since the 1980s was neither here nor there.
@sped6954
@sped6954 5 лет назад
Exactly. Just for reference, many years ago, I bought a watch when I was a kid, probably 1983 to 1984 when I was 15 or 16 years old. I still have that watch. First I'll tell you a little about the watch, then at the end, I'll tell you how much I paid for it. First off, it's a quartz digital. That oughta earn me a few thumbs down lol. Approximately 34mm case, and all the complications possible to have on a watch at the time, except for a calculator, but that's a story for another watch... 12/24 hour time (day, month and date in top half of the display; and hour, minute and seconds on the bottom half; no year input so it won't allow for leap year), displayed on all complications except the stopwatch, stopwatch with 3 lap split time and memory, 23:59:59 countdown timer, alarm (only one), hourly chime, ability to set for a second time zone (set manually, no city display), and a step pacer (switchable between mi/km; programmable between 65 and 180 what I assume are steps per minute because I've never used it, and 50m water resistance (probably not even splash resistant anymore due to numerous battery changes over the years and never changing the O-ring. I'm sure the seals aroun each pusher are probably worn too, along with whatever they use to seal the crystal against the case.) The only thing wrong with it, is it doesn't make noise anymore. The last time I replaced the battery, after I had the back cover off, after I had removed the three screws that hold the battery clamp in place, and while I was lifting that clamp out of the way, I still had the screwdriver in my hand. I hit and broke off the little tab that sticks up and grounds against the back cover to make the alarm, chime, button press, and pacer all functional and make their respective sounds. And now for the reveal... It's an Innovative Time Sports Master, model number Q700BRN. It a black resin housing with a black silicone band. It's had several batteries over the past 36-37 years, and I've replaced the band twice. I've spent more money replacing batteries and bands than I paid for the watch. A lot more. A hell of a lot more. No, make that a shit ton more. You know how when you're at Walmart and they have those two four sided spinning racks on the counter? One of those racks is the locked one that they keep the G-Shocks in. Mine would have been in the other one if it was Walmart... but it was at Kmart it would have been in the one that they keep the lower end Casio and Timex watches. I paid around $5 for it. Yep, a $5 off the counter watch that has more scratches in the crystal than it does clear spots is still alive and going strong. When this battery dies, I'm going to put a new one in it. And another, and another, and so on until a new battery doesn't do it anymore.

The beauty of the the watch game is that anyone can get into collecting no matter how much you make. I get just as much joy wearing a fun Casio as I do with a high end JDM or Swiss watch. That's why it's best to start at your comfort level. Mine was an Omega Speedy reduced, others are G-Shocks, or Seiko. However, IF you or anyone want's that grail. By grail I mean something that you look for, work hard for, a reward/accomplishment timepiece. If it's too easy to find or afford. It truly isn't a grail watch no matter what brand. Try to avoid watches that will get in the way of your grail. THAT"S what TGV and many other RU-vidrs will not tell you. Like TGV quoted Winston Churchill "You'll never get to your destination if you stop to throw stones at every barking dog".... Well you'll never get to your grail if you keep buying watches that are cheap, expensive, homage, compromise watches, or just crap. In the end you will save so much money and time. You will appreciate what you have and then. That's when you can continue with the hobby if you choose to.

There are lots of RU-vid watch channels that spend an exorbitant amount of time disparaging any watch brand that isn’t a Rolex. This watch thing is a hobby and to spend energy in a negative way on a hobby is bizarre. It’s just a watch.

Also loved the insight about how dealing with health struggles has made you appreciate life and to embrace positivity and encouragement. And the bit about do not judge a person by their watch. Or their appearance! I remember on at least two occasions meeting somebody whose appearance looked to be drab, only to find that they were absolutely wonderful characters. Excellent video TGV, could not of been more correct about the misuse of the term Horology. It truly is a shame so many people look to watches as another medium to prove their worth - personally there is nothing more vulgar in my eyes when a person seems to go out of their way to display their outrageously expensive watch, It seems to me like the watch is wearing the person rather than vice versa in that situation.

Chad Fuller right he made a statement saying that the company is the opposite of what we all Love they have no respect for their customers and no respect for themselves and they don’t want to be a part of that. I can’t find fault in that logic. However I can understand the other side being that those watches invicta and dw have great marketing skills and grab ppl that would have never gotten into the hobby and they can become more savvy with time and research, also better brands can learn from their marketing strategies because there is a demand out there.

Also very true regarding happiness and feeling inadequate thus acquiring luxury items. I noticed in your other older videos that, as you say, have more snobbery in them. Like myself, when unhappy I too have felt this, and I think everyone has to fight their ego, especially with watches. We should all just be happy with a sports 5, but often seek to gravitate to something we deem as "More" when realistically, these watches should satisfy our passion. However, the human condition seems to dictate the lust for a more luxurious and 'growth' like state that we seem to cling to.

Apparently I don’t belong in watch collecting circles if that’s my “level”! The point which he obviously doesn’t get is that I’m not bothered about ‘belonging’ to any community. I buy a watch because I like it, can afford it, and will enjoy wearing it, NOT because I want to impress shallow people & belong in their little club. Enjoy your watches people 🙂

Thank you Tristano again for your wonderful video. Though I am going to sleep with my bedroom light on tonight as I'm a little bit scared of that Hugo creature. The great thing about having a nice watch that also happens to have a quartz movement is that it's something you can just grab on the run. I dislike wearing a watch if the date and of course the time isn't right and sometimes I am in such a rush I have to literally fly out of the door I don't want to sit down and adjust the watch time let alone the day / date. Hence having a quality quartz watch is such a great thing and they are sooooo accurate timepieces, for me and my busy schedule throughout the day my watch needs to be accurate.

Once he learned that it was a Seiko 5, his whole demeanor changed; he came very close to laughing and was amused that I thought Seiko was a good watch. That was last, May 2019. Oh well!

I'm glad I stumbled across this video. I've been moderately interested in watches for a long time but recently got more interested, especially in the technical side. I've been practically binge watching videos (a lot of tear down and repair videos for the most part because that sounds like a lot of fun to me) for a couple weeks now, and started watching your videos a few days ago. Sadly I'm one of those people who will never be able to afford some of the nicer pieces, I can't justify to even get into the triple digit range. Honestly it shocks me that people talk about watches that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars like it's nothing, I instantly felt excluded and a bit silly for even thinking I could get into the hobby. These people toss around watches that cost more than everything I own like it's the most normal thing in the world. I looked around to join some social media groups and was instantly put off due to the fact that only high dollar watches were being shared. I have enough experience with social media, especially various hobbyists groups, to know that if I posted some of my watches I'd probably not have a good time with it, so I abandoned that idea right away. I got hooked on skeleton automatics, and I'm growing a small collection of the ultra-budget ones, because that's what I can afford and justify paying for. My girlfriend bought me a Forsining for my birthday, it's a $40 watch, and I think it's incredible. It's one of the best watches I've ever had, and I'm going to be buying more of their watches. Sure the finish of those watches doesn't compare to more expensive ones, but they work, and they work surprisingly well. Plus I like how they look, and I'm happy with that. I'm actually going to buy a new one soon and have it shipped to a buddy, I showed him some pictures of my most recent skeleton and now he's drooling for one, so I'm going to hook him up.

@HighCoup333
@HighCoup333 5 лет назад
Back in the era when a battle unit had only a few or one timepiece, it was passed to the soldier who was "on watch" for the shift, I believe, and the term transferred over to be synonymous with the device itself. Because who ever was on watch, had *the watch* literally.
