Love it! Makes me want to move south with my collection! I've been keeping cacti in Minnesota, which is a huge challenge in the winter. Dormancy is usually from mid-October to mid-May! It's quite a production to bring them inside every year. We do have 3 species of native cacti here though, which I keep outside year-round!
@hamsterama
@hamsterama Год назад
I live in Ohio. Can you tell me the names of the species you have that you keep outside year-round? By the way, I also keep all my cacti outside as long as possible, but I bring them inside once temperatures get to 32 degrees F. The limited space on the windowsills inside my house is the only thing keeping my cactus addiction in check. LOL! I have unlimited space outside, but very limited space inside my house. Oh, and right now, we're having an usually warm fall. I'm happy about that, because it means I can still leave all my cacti outside. Normally, I would have my cacti inside by now, but with these warm temperatures, they can continue to stay outside.
@tiss0006
@tiss0006 Год назад
@@hamsterama The species are Opuntia fragilis, Opuntia humifusa, and Escobaria vivipara. Escobaria vivipara is super rare though, and often poached, so don't get that one. They can all survive temperatures down to -20°F

@@tiss0006 Awesome, thanks for your reply! I've tried to do research on cacti that can survive Midwestern winters, but I was having a hard time finding any info. There's a big difference between surviving below freezing temperatures in a dry, mountainous area, and below freezing temperatures in the Midwest, where you can have rain one day, followed by a freeze. I will see if any of my local nurseries sell those two opuntia species. If not, I'll order them online. Oh yeah, and poachers are scum. Nothing worse than someone stealing a plant or animal from the nature, just to make a few bucks.

Thank you for your awesome comments. I am learning from you. If you haven’t, check out the RU-vid channel of Clyde Morris (Morris Park in the Ozarks). He lives in Missouri and he has opuntia and chollas planted outside. They get buried in snow every year. But in spring, they all come back and flower profusely.

You have quite a variety for your outdoor gardens!!! I think I have 6 opuntia varieties now that will take freezing. And my Coryphantha vivipara (Escoberia vivipara) but I don't think it stays dry enough for it to stay outside like the Opuntias. I did an experiment on a cutting of trichocereus grandiflores hybrid. I've had it setting around for months. And I decided to see just how cold it will take. It's already stood 22°F. I want to see just how cold these trichocereus will take! Very interesting video Ana. Your climate is similar to mine, with the difference that the humidity in my (northern Italy) is around 90% with fog all the winter. Cold combined with high humidity can do a lot of damage. I keep some plants indoors, others in small balcony greenhouses, and those that need to be outside are sheltered from the rain and covered with "non-woven" specific for agriculture. Ciao Ana, I wish you a good winter! 🌥🌨❄⛄

I had a whole bunch of succulents out in an unheated greenhouse. One of them was a jellybean succulent that had grown huge. Articles all say 'They are not frost-tolerant, although they can grow well outdoors if temperatures don’t drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.7 degrees Celsius). I had some of them out in snow and they survived! I think they adapt in time. But I will see because I have about 10 cactus on the way and all of them will be out in an unheated greenhouse all year round. It will be an interesting experiment. But I think they are much more hardy and adaptive than we give them credit for, even if they were never meant for the cold. However one of them says 'Sulcorebutia 'totorensis' and claims to be cold hardy.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Год назад
@@mreverybody1150 So true they really can be more cold hardy and adaptive than we think, Sulcorebutia can be very cold hardy too, the drier you can keep them during the winter months the lower the temperature they can take, XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon I received delivery of two lots of Sulcorebutia rauschii the other day. At the time of purchase I had no idea they were cold hardy. I discovered that the other day and was very surprised! they look so unassuming and cute. I will be growing some indoors and outdoors. By the way, I got to thinking how to protect my Cacti from slugs and snails and came across an experiment where they line the pot outside with copper tape. Have you heard about this? the slugs and snails look really uncomfortable going over the tape! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fyr1ax4V5To.html

@@mreverybody1150 Hi :-D yes I use the copper tape around some of my seedling pots and trays, it really does work, I was having lots of problems with Slugs and snails taking pieces out of my cactus seedlings and used the copper tape, it works really well, and since using it I haven't had any Slugs or snails take nay bites out my babies XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon Glad to hear it's working. I covered all of my Planters with that tape last night. Something else that has worked quite well in the past is a product called Envi Feed and Protect. It's a mineral treatment that makes the plants taste bitter to snails. I once sprayed some on a plant and 10 snails all left and went to the next plant pot all together! I will use both.

You have so many cacti! Just how do you manage to manage their watering and what cacti can survive the cold or not? I’m mostly worried about the uk rain so I keep the cacti I own inside as I have few now, which kinds of cacti do you think would be able to survive our weather here, if any at all?
@CactusCaffeine

Many types of Opuntias such as Opuntia humifusa are cold hardy. They can even survive snow. Many chollas are also cold-tolerant. But I would keep protected from rain. Cacti are cold-hardy if they are kept dry so try to protect them from too much rain.

Hello Ana, I wonder if that Frailea grahliana of yours (clump forming one, next to castanea/asteroides) ever produced flowers? I have mine for five years and it has never blossomed. It regularly forms many buds, but they turn to fruit without ever flowering (that occurrence is known as "cleistogamy"). They do produce viable seeds which is nice (I believe that's called "autogamy"). They do produce flowers on occasion, however, supposedly under very warm and sunny conditions, but I have only seen that on pictures. Flowers are supposed to be relatively small and pale to bright yellow in colour. Thank you in advance and best regards, Nino
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine Год назад
Hi Nino. Yes, both of them have shown me their flowers. But you are correct that they are cleistogamous and often goes straight to setting seeds rather than showing it’s flower first. The flowers would come up only when it was consistently very hot here (over 100F) everyday. I have pictures of them in my Instagram account. (Cactus Caffeine USA) 🙂🌵🌼🌼
