We should be allowed to carry mace/pepper spray but it is against the law. It is a non-lethal way to protect yourself if you’re attacked when you’re out and about in my opinion. Instead I carry a travel size (3inches high) can of cheap hairspray. The cheap hairsprays are heavily laced with alcohol based lacquer and sting like crazy if you get it in the eyes. I got the idea from my uncle who is a barrister in London, England. As he says, “hairspray isn’t against the law”. However at home I now keep an asp in my bedside drawer. As a previous victim of a middle of the night break-in when I was 16 and home alone, I feel I need something more than a baseball bat to defend myself. Now I do own four handguns but the law states they must be locked away in a gun safe which isn’t very convenient for self defence and would probably land me in a world of trouble even if I did somehow manage to unlock, load and use one. So while I was down in the US a number of years ago I picked up an asp. Yes I know they are illegal here but I don’t care. I need something that packs a wallop but isn’t as big as a bat. Asps are perfect for that. Next to the asp in the same drawer is a can of bear spray and I will use both if the need arises. It’s sad that we can’t even be safe in our own homes anymore. It’s even sadder that we may be the ones who end up in prison for defending ourselves in our own homes.

Glad I live in the United States. The reality is a few urban hell holes account for a disproportionate amount of violent crime. That said, many people including myself legally carry loaded firearms and other tools(pepper spray, knives, stun guns, etc) for self defense. When my county sheriff, two city police chiefs, my mayor and others recommend getting training and then always be armed, I’m following their recommendations. All of us are our own first responders, we have to defend ourselves until police are able to respond. I’m actually shocked that Citizens of any country support laws that discourage/penalize self defense. Laws against self-defense encourage criminal behavior because those laws create compliant/docile victims that are easy prey. Yes I am aware that while there are evil people in this world, I choose to live my life, not be paralyzed by fear. Practicing good situational awareness avoids 90 percent plus of problems. Since I do carry arms, my body language is that of a predator vs prey. Criminology studies have found that predators are real good at reading body language, they pick easy prey. Until Canadians culturally embrace self defense rights, then reform laws, it’s a no win for the average Canadian.

When my county sheriff, two city police chiefs, my mayor and others recommend getting "training and then always be armed, I’m following their recommendations." 2/3 rds of gun deaths are suicides, clearly we need to address emotional/mental health issues. As far as homicides, 70 percent are direct/indirectly related to the illegal drug trade/gangs. 2 percent of US counties account for 70 percent of our gun related violence. Ironically the areas in the US with the worse crime have the strictest gun controls on law abiding citizens. Of course when we have prosecutors who refuse to actually enforce laws, release violent offenders with no bail, of course we get chaos. Assuming we have relatively honest elections, things will get better in 2025.

A guy jumps out of the bush and comes at you with a knife. You use the dog (pepper) spray on him as it’s the only thing you have at hand to defend yourself. The dog spray is legal for use on aggressive dogs, but is a prohibited weapon if intended to be used on people. The word weapon is wrongly used all the time. A hammer is a tool, although if its used to bash someone's head in you don't like it was used as a weapon. The hammer is still a tool. If it is used to protect yourself against an attacker, its still a tool. It was used in a different way than designed but still a hammer, still a tool. A Weapon is how something is used. Nothing is a weapon just on its own, itself not being used to harm another person. YOUR BEING LIED TO - GAS LIGHTED - DECEIVED -

Heard a story about a guy that lives in an area that's had issues with break-ins and gang crime lately. He's heard about others having issues when they try defend themselves. So he's gone straight home alone and made himself a revolving net gun, that will fire a total of 8 nets, and if he has time, he has a switch that cuts all.of the power in his house, while he puts on a gas mask with multiple strobe flashlights he can activate with a single switch, while he also has body armor, and a sheild he's made that may or may not have an electrical current running through it. Apparantly he's also got a marble releasing system, as well as unfoldable sticky traps. He's not your everyday kind of guy. He's a manger at an engineering firm, and he's in his 20's.... he's got a rare mind, and God help the police and assaulilants that have to witness him successfully defend his home. He certainly doesn't want.to hurt anybody.

WOW - Do you really want to live in Canada??? So, let me see if I get the jest of this information - you cannot carry a knife if your intent is to protect yourself??? However, the criminals who may want to rob you know that potential victims will obey the law and probably won't have a weapon on them. Victims don't seem to have any rights - if the victim picks up a stick during a robbery and beats the criminal the victim had the intent to protect them self - so, it seems any victim that has the intent to protect them self with anything will go to jail - and you want to live in Canada??????

I've asked this question to many people, my conclusion is society is stupid and weak. No one values themselves or their livelihood enough to make decisions for themselves, and have allowed a giant, tyrannical government that is equivalent to a drunken step father to abuse them. Society pays taxes, the public sector is their employee which includes politicians and cops. Why are the employees (government workers) telling their bosses (tax payers) what to do. All those weapons cops have, yeah, that's tax payer funded. So these donut eating lard butts get full auto M4 carbines, full capacity magazines, OTF knives, pepper spray, tazers, they get to call back up which is essentially a nation wide army at their disposal and the public gets what in return for the billions wasted in tax payers money? All police should be fired, a citizen militia is instantly activated and everyone deputized and can conceal or open carry any form of tool and weapon like the police did. Now lets see how many criminals want to rob an armed militia.

I totally disagree here. You are saying, do not walk at night, do not walk around down dodgy areas... but what about those people who attack in broad daylight? What about those that kill or injure due to gang affiliations and initiations? Do you think that these people care if you are not armed? Do you think they care if they kill you? No they do not. These people are ARMED. You are asking ordinary citizens to essentially bend over and vaseline up for all the good it will do. Why does the law prohibit anything that can be made into a weapon? I was an engineer with a full arsenal of weaponry at my disposal. I have no issues carrying a knife as I do use it for cutting and opening things. Would the police take kindly that I have a karambit, or a stanley knife from Home Depot? Even a very sharp pencil can be made into a weapon. All can kill. I am not intending to kill or hurt someone with my weaponry, but if someone is a threat to me... I would rather get jail time and justify my use of the weapon, then to be DEAD or seriously hurt. Come on, be real. You are asking us to not defend ourselves when the situations that are occurring province wide call for us to ACT immediately. Not consider the consequences before we do so. If these laws were lenient, then maybe that crackhead or gang member who has you in their sights would think twice because he would not know if you are armed, rather than an easy picking. "Would it be worth it to attack that benign citizen for some cash, or will I die from the attempt?" Make those fools think twice. I no longer want to look over my shoulder. Living in fear is NOT LIVING.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Why “feel safe” when you can arm yourself to be safe? I don’t care what anyone says about firearms, knives or other weapons criminals use. The way I see it, it’s either me or the criminal, and I was not going to let it be me. Seems to me that the law favors criminals more than the citizens. And duty to retreat isn’t doing anything but keeping you weak and helpless. Also, duty to retreat can get you killed because bullets do outrun human speed

@@Slurgical_3D_Terrain_Channel The big issue in Canada, is intent. But rather than pursue solely intent, prosecution is far reaching and fishes for everything and anything they hope can stick. And legal aid? lol, you better hope you have an attorney, and arent banking on any help from legal aid service. Lets talk bear spray (mace/pepper) You can carry bear spray to walk your dog (you live in the country, coyotes/black bears are common) or when out hiking but when you are approached by a mugger or violent perpetrator, use your bear spray? You are in for it, let me tell you. Charged with possession with prohibited weapon. Charge with threats of deadly force. Charged with assault with prohibited weapon. Charged with concealed weapon. Charged with pointing and discharging prohibited item. Now granted, in the courtroom you can fight this off, better with all the probable grounds checked off such as, 1-you warned the perpetrator, and he had brandished weapon first. 2-you felt justified in concern for safety, 3-lt was not concealed, you had a spray in a visible holster. 4-you did not use excessive force (kick and beat the sprayed assailant once sprayed) and 5-you had the spray for bears and coyotes in purpose -> not for human use. 6-you were in the act of walking the dog or hiking and in that environment when it went down. There is a highly reasonable chance this will not go far in court, a judge will sympathize with the dog walker and not the crown and RCMP. HOWEVER......you are still going to get slammed with legal fees, tedious time in courts and pre-trial, charges that may stick to your name and records permanently even if exonerated, limitations to possession going forward or even being bonded, time away from work or you can even lose your job, family uncertainty, as well as depression and total lack of trust in canadian government and judiciary from then on. Something most definitely is wrong here.

I know of some that carry such tools as a carabiner for climbing as a key holder that in a pinch could have a hand fitted through it and used in defence. The consideration being that it's just your key chain, not a self defence tool, what then? If in your car you had some of your baseball gear, ball, bat and gloves. If you are stopped could that be considered offensive? What if you were being robbed or car jacked? Is it within the law to defend yourself with your sports gear?

People think cops are some sort of God's they have xray vision? LOL I know someone, who carry's things they're not supposed to and in some instances used it for defence. 1. If a situations happens, don't be a goofy and stick around for police. Only a dummy plays the good citizen to stick around and co-operate with corrupt cops. They're not your friend and they don't care if you defended yourself, you'll always be a the bad person in their eyes. 2. Do people think criminals are going to go complain to the cops that you cracked their head like an egg after they tried robbing you. So worrying about a police report about what you did WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Society is so dumb!
