Sometimes I meet people who think that living a structured and disciplined life is limiting... I think it's liberating. In this video, I talk about why self-discipline is important and how it actually leads to freedom.

Hey guys, thanks for watching! Glad too see the overwhelming positivity and receptiveness to the message in this video. I've received some good constructive feedback that I'd like to add to this video. At some point in the video, I use the phrase "genetic engineering" to describe how food is being altered to be more addictive. That was a poor choice of words on my part. I meant engineering as a synonym for "created" and genetic should not have been placed in that sentence :). Thanks to all those who have pointed that out. Have a good day!

Freedom in Thought I get your point, but ignoring most of our main biological behavior is also wrong, I think that sticking to the most natural behavior is the right thing to do, for example a natural human wouldn't find pleasure in watching two people have sex through a computer neither eating junk food, but he also wouldn't find pleasure in many restrictions that are necessary to live the perfect life, in fact, the pursue of the perfect life is what leads people to lose valuable time in something impossible, so don't worry too much about those things man. Greetings from Mexico :)
@bernardgrecian86
@bernardgrecian86 6 лет назад
diego delgado well the thing to ask is" what is a perfect life" then, its more about "what can i do to get there" and wether or not perfection is attainable. Seeking perfection isn't a waste of time if by seeking it you have become better at living. So the fact in fact is if you believe perfection is unattainable. Living a better life is in itself a progress which implies a process which inadvertently connotes imperfection because in order for it to be propelled it needs to have a reason. That reason being unsatisfactory feedback to a current state of being. So why not?

The reason why I feel self discipline frees you from yourself is that when you succumb to short term desires consistently then you are like a slave to those desire, however if you say no and do what YOU want and KNOW is the right thing to do then you'll feel a sense of freedom, a sense of control in your life. It is hard and a difficult path but it's worth it.
@smokingcrab2290

Self-discipline is extremely important. Like the saying goes, the mind is an excellent slave but a terrible master. If we let our minds dictate the flow of our lives, we'll become slaves to our moods and fluctuating desires which in turn will only bring us misery. I had to learn it the hard way during the lockdown that despite being worn down by having a regular routine of school, tuition and other activities, they helped me have a sense of purpose and direction and kept me in shape. I wish to cure myself of this cycle of lethargy I have gotten stuck in, and I hope I can also get the message across to many people so they don't suffer the same way I did.

I am trying to turn my life around and be self-disciplined. I moved to another city, far away from friends and family so I can go back to school for science and to not be distracted by anyone. I can already see that when I go back to visit my friends, that they'll think I'm boring but this video is helping put into words what I actually feel. I don't want to continue to give in to short term pleasures, it has made me into a "loser" by my standards. I'm 34 and still haven't achieve anything meaningful in my life so I don't care if others think my life is boring. They haven't done anything for me and their opinion of me is irrelevant. I just want to live the life I have, doing what I want and achieving the goals I set out (healthy body and mind, and successful career - not working for someone else).

Doesn't it suck that more people seem to want you to fail than to see you succeed? Most people are too lazy to grow and try to improve and change themselves. So they resort to trying to keep other people from growing so they don't feel left behind. Those people don't matter. Their opinion doesn't matter. I'm considered to be boring by most people around me because I don't like to drink anymore or waste my money on things like eating out so often. But I have many other interests and hobbies that another like minded person will find fun and interesting. Just hoping to meet those kinds of people and stay away from those who don't think about the consequences of the choices that they make today.

I love this video. I was trying to put this concept into words myself because I'm often mocked or looked down on by others for "living like a monk". They tell me I need to "live a little" or "loosen up", but I don't feel restrained by my disciplined lifestyle: it comes to me with little to no effort. I feel accomplished at the end of the day, unlike in the past where I felt my life was wasting away. And feeling accomplished is a great mood booster. The hard part is settling into new routines, but once it becomes habit, it's easy to maintain from there.

This video, I must say has been one of the most influential videos of my life. I remember watching this in sometime during last February, and after I realised the point communicated, I started improving a lot in my studies. To everyone reading this comment, self discipline may be a bit difficult at first, but it's going to be well worth it. Have a good day(or a night)! EDIT: It's been around 4 years, and the momentum has been great! I eventually got into one of the most selective programs in the country for college. I have to agree with you, but to a degree. Self discipline is just a different cage to choose to be in. Either one alone is of course ridiculous, which you can see if you realise that these long term goals are just biology-based too. And also that living with a degree of goofiness and spontenaiety is fun. When it comes to compromise, my favourite thing is instead forming good rewarding habits. I am not being groundbreaking, I'm being that normal nuanced viewpoint that doesn't like to go viral on the internet.
@freya7799
@freya7799 2 года назад
I think that’s a fair point . Also beeing disciplined in a few area and still keeping space for spontaneous fun can go hand in hand, maybe even better then in a life without order and structure. Another point is that you don’t need to be disciplined or improve on it in every area of your life. Chaos can play it’s role too, as long as YOU can decide how big this role is allowed to become. And that’s where the argument of discipline=freedom comes in handy.

video games can be distracting and a hindrance if you let them be. But they can also be good tools of learning. If you want to conquer a difficult videogame you have to be disciplined enough to do it; taking small steps to do what's necessary to get to your objective, not let your emotions get the best of you when playing a difficult part and not taking mistakes personally, this last one step can only be attained if you are conscious and aware of yourself rather than being just on autopilot when playing (starting to sound like real life a bit?) and this teaches you to be patient, a must have to being disciplined and thus acheving your objectives! And yes, you can enjoy playing a videogame this way (it's more enjoyable tbh), and by doing this you realize that just playing videogames all the time is not a healthy thing; but they can be a healthy entertainment, and it's all up to you. P.S. Can't say the same thing about junk food tho :p

That's you making excuses, trying to justify why you spend so much time playing video games. NOBODY, and I repeat, NOBODY has ever gotten anywhere closer to their life's goals by playing video games. Nobody has gained anything by playing video games. Video games are a tool, like television, for passing the sands of time, because people feel the sands of time are so painful to bear, that they need something to numb them up and pass it through. UNLESS you're a professional esports athlete, or a streamer/youtuber/speedruner. Then you're making money off of the pass-time. So you're in a different ballpark.
@cryora
@cryora 6 лет назад
I gained quite a bit playing video games. Sure, I also have to put in the real-life practice, but games certainly enhanced it. One example is playing Unreal Tournament 2004, where players would use sniper rifles like it is a close quarter weapon and get awfully good at it. Well, in real life, in my latest Army marksmanship qualification, I shot 39 targets out of 40 (okay they were paper targets, rather than pop up, but still) and scored expert. Another example is playing Don't Starve Together and having that help me better understand how to survive on my own. Bridge building games have helped improve my understanding of mechanics and statics. Racing games helped me become a better cyclist. Games like Skyrim helped me become better at exploring the real world on my own. Then there's the aspect of modding and game design. Surely, many gamers would also have dabbled in some of that. I can say me dabbling in game design has made me a better programmer, and better at project management. Graphics design helped me become better at visualizing in 3D. The Universe sandbox game inspired me to write my own particle simulations using what I know about math and physics. Some terminology appearing in the game / graphics design world also appear in the scientific community, since ideas are often borrowed. Examples include quaternions and bezier curves. Also, don't engineers have to use CAD tools? Wouldn't experience in 3D modeling be helpful in that regard? Ever tried 3D modeling, rigging, sculpting, and texturing (to include normal, bump, and specular map texturing) a dinosaur? I haven't, but there are people who have, as you can look up on RU-vid, and it doesn't look easy. A slacker would not want to deal with all of the complexities and work associated with designing a game, or building a gaming PC. Having experience in building PC's was quite helpful when I worked in IT (TBH, I don't think any of the IT training I got would have been more helpful than my own hands on experience building/upgrading gaming PC's). Another example for what gaming can be helpful is that video cards are now being used to accelerate scientific computations. Just look up CUDA, OpenCL, and Numba. Sure, if all you are is a casual gamer who only plays Peggle, you're probably not going to gain very much out of it, but you can get deep into it and have it become rather rewarding. It doesn't have to directly make you money for it to help you.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems a bit misleading to say that companies are genetically engineering food to have more fat and salt. I'm decently sure that they just put more salt in their food while it is being processed. I think genetic engineering is more about making crops immune to pests or pest control chemicals and also they engineer plants to grow larger faster.

Mary Hill gmo's are fucked. you cannot trust the FDA or the food industry, most high ranking members of the FDA have ties to food companies. GMO are unhealthy, rats fed with gmo's get sick more often, don't grow as much, and die sooner than rats fed with normal food

I'm sure I drank over 100g of sugar today from a bottle of grape juice in morning combined with a cup of soda in the afternoon. Drinks usually have around 50g of sugar, which is about all you should consume each day. Then if you're hungry, there are sugary snacks easily available at 7 11's and vending machines. If you prefer something savory, Ramen Cup noodles are inexpensive, but high in sodium, while most fast food restaurants have meat for food, very few vegetarian options, if any. If you try and get vegetarian, it's a salad or they put guacamole on it which tastes like ass. You have to really put in the effort to find vegetarian food or make them yourself, but that will consume your time, which could be spent getting sleep or working.
@ksub91

Mary Hill, GMO is not about putting sugar (or salt, or fat etc) in the food. GMO is about for example making crops better at resisting pests or for example to not die of sudden draught or flood.

Fix Yourself (Personal Responsibility): -Make sure you do not sleep too late. -Get up early. -Clean plus organise your house. -Do exercise to stay fit and healthy. -Stop interrupting random people. -Stop forcing random people to love you. -Stop comparing yourself to others. -Stop being a spoiled narcissist. -Have gratitude. -Have self-discipline. -Make peace with your family and your friends. -Take every opportunity that is given to you. -Get to school on time. -Get to college on time. -Get to work on time. -Stay educated. -Save up money without wasting it. -Pay your house bills on time. -Drive responsibly -Do not drink alcohol. -Do not do drugs. -Do not gamble. -Do not have to much sugar. -Do not have to much sex. -Do not have kids before marriage. -Do not join any radical groups. -Do not commit crimes. I have a message for confused human beings around the world of every generation especially the younger generation coming from a zoomer myself born in 1998. I believe the younger generation needs to fix themselves rather than trying to fix other people in this world because in my honest opinion you cannot fix people it is up to people to fix themselves period.

dang. what's ironic and kind of hilarious about it is that people know it! they know exactly what they're doing to themselves, but they succumb to it anyway. I myself am a victim of this, but every time I resist doing anything I know will only slow me down and set me back, it gets easier and easier, until I don't even feel it any more. you're right, it is liberating not being tied down by those things. when you stick to a set of rules, you stick to them because you choose to, and that is free will and choice, which is freedom. but succumbing to the little short term pleasures, like you said, isn't entirely our choice. we're being pushed by corporations to do it, because "it will make us feel good". thank you for personifying this in a way that is so easy to understand, I really appreciate it

Self discipline and a belief in Biblical principles like those mentioned in Proverbs helped me to accomplish pretty much all my life goals at the age of 40. I ran out of goals and had to make new ones since I have so much time left on this earth (at least I think I do). Can't recommend self-discipline enough. As long as you set aside a little bit of time to relax and enjoy the present moment here and there. But yeah, train yourself to improve at something worthwhile at least a little bit every day.

@@jemimajanvier4706 Proverbs Chapter 20 alone has several. "An inheritance claimed too soon will not be blessed at the end," is a good one. It tells you to hold off on the reward a little while and to wait before claiming it. Takes discipline for that. These verses tell you WHAT to do, but don't tell you how to WANT to do it. I don't know any way to teach someone to want discipline enough to do it. Just got to do it whether you want to or not I suppose.

I'm current very inflexible (body wise), so every morning, without fail, I just do some stretches to fix my problem. I've noticed this automatically made me want to do more so after a few days of stretching I started working out and eating healthy. freedom is not absolute...humans are naturally kind to themselves.the incentive to change will put the human outside its tribe...this is lonely and life threatening...the courage to be different from is also the search to be part of..human existence is dependent on the connection to something greater than itself......or it will slowly die.
@silascybin
@silascybin 7 лет назад
brokecreole except there is nothing greater than itself. We are made up of the exact same material that created the universe. We are everything. We are just energy that took a human form. Once you realize that, your connection to everything will deepen. Because of the societal system people are very divisive due to beliefs and likes/dislikes and opinions on countless, meaningless subjects. I found that separating myself from those systems (not entirely clearly), but furthering myself from the physical desires, the happier and more whole I become. Meditation, practicing power of will (cutting off what your dependant on), clean eating and being conscious of what your mind takes in will make you a happier person and bring you more in touch with reality. And you'll realize you don't need much at all because you have everything.
@brokecreole
@brokecreole 7 лет назад
Maybe humans have convinced themselves that greatness begins and ends with them. Yet science gives different indicators that humans are most vulnerable in the universe. A tree can live for over thousands of years. Yet humans die when love is absent.
@silascybin
@silascybin 7 лет назад
brokecreole Absolutely. Our awareness of self, intelligence, and ability to question the universe is quite amazing, comparative to any species we've known. That's impressive and has the potential to enhance life on earth for all beings. Yet it's currently used to exploit, torture, and kill all things for the benefit of a small percentage of humans because of ego and power and a made up concept of money. Torturing and killing 50 billion sentient beings each year, hundreds of thousands humans killed in war a year, millions of animals and humans enslaved and forced to do free labor. If all bees die the eco system goes to shit. If all humans die, the planet would thrive and life on earth would be drastically improved for all living beings. I would say our importance is illusory or we haven't realized it because we are too distracted by lies of society, government and imaginary dividing lines created by ourselves. But the only way to change things is by changing yourself first. Be the greatness you want humanity to be and spread that positivity.
@silascybin
@silascybin 7 лет назад
brokecreole I wouldn't go so far to say we are the most vulnerable. Is Life span your definition of greatness or vulnerability? Everything plays a part for better or worse but in the end does it really matter? I think we make up a meaning for the meaningless existence we all live in. But the fact that we have the capability to analyze in that way is a thing to appreciate while we are here. We die and our energy disperses and is recycled. Everything is energy and energy cannot be created nor destroyed.

as an aspiring game devloper, video games are some of the most encompassing pieces of art and science in history. u can play games and become inspired by the story, the music, the gameplay, the physics engine, the code the list goes on. not to mention some ppl make their lives around playing games...twitch...people who write about games..etc etc. altough games do play on our emotions....that's kind of the point, it's to create a memorable experience, like a movie or a book. this video comes off as short sighted and shallow and doesn't really explore any of the accusations you make regarding these "short term" pleasures and you are honestly only projecting what YOU think is the correct course of action a human being should take.

happily confused dog I agree with your stance. Not to mention he treats extrinsic rewards (money) as having the same value as intrinsic. He basically preaches being self-disciplined from the mundane "societal cages" to achieve even more mundane things. Only people who do not have the ability to think for themselves would take such shallowness at face value. This attempts to convey an idea but really has no base to support it.

happily confused dog You're missing the point. What if you use your whole life playing videogames 24 hours, while your job is stagnating, and you're too lazy to do any streams or practice yourself to be more entertaining? WITH those aforementioned short pleasures, you can get something out of life but if you always give in while you know the benefit is only for pleasure then what will you get? You should analyze first instead of only getting triggered.

R B M The thing you just described there is called addiction, most people that get physically or mentally hurt are addicts, unlike actual gamers who have self control over their hobbies.
