Actually, in a normal car (assuming you even meant an automatic rather than a manual), you ARE doing something. Even in an automatic, you have throttle pedal and the brake pedal and the steering wheel to operate, duh! Plus, of course you even have to put your automatic into your chosen mode. There's plenty of stuff you have to do even with an auto!

It can detect individual traffic cones at construction sites. It's not gonna crash you off the road... FYI large airplanes already pretty much fly by themselves. It will probably be another 5-10 years before its owned by the mass but i'm pretty positive they'll still have an auto drive mechanic. It's important to have those motor skills and still feels awesome to drive like a person saving the world.

Dafuqsus Not necessarily, especially when it comes to whether or not this will make money. Which it definitely will. The market for cars is large and competitive (not to mention the fact the thing drives itself), meanwhile the only money they are making from something like Google Translate is ad revenue, if any. Google would be more inclined to perfect and refine a product like Google Cars, Google Glass, etc., because there is a market of people willing to buy them. Google Translate is just a free web service. Its a bit sad that technological research is run purely on whether or not it will fill your wallet at the end of the day, but at least it encourages people to work towards something

Spelling isn't a problem for Google translate, it's grammar that's the problem, and this is different, the spoken word is fairly dependent on judgement calls that only humans (currently) can make properly, in order to formulate natural sounding sentences. With a self driving car it is 100% dependent on calculations, something that computers are much better than humans at.
