As someone who tried self enquiry only once, going out of town for this purpose after having read Raman for years and becoming convinced there was something there, and fell into pure undifferentiated sameness with awareness on first trial, I can testify that this man kniws aht he is talking about. As far as I am concerned he is the only genuine mystic, by far the deepest and most lucid , incomparable to anyone else. I am tempted to say he is God incarnate.

Transcript from first 4 minutes of video Self enquiry Practise Beginners in self enquiry were advised by Sri Ramana to put their attention on the inner feeling of i and to hold that feeling as long as possible. They would be told that if their attention was distracted by other thoughts they should revert to the awareness of the I thought, when ever they became aware that their attention had wondered. He suggested various aids to assist this process. One could ask ones self: Who am I? Or where does this I come from? But the ultimate aim was to be continuously aware of the I. Which assumes that it is responsible for all the activities of the body and the mind. In the early stages of practice it is the attention to the feeling I is a mental activity, which takes the form of a thought or a perception as the practice develops the thought I gives way to a subjectively experienced feeling of I. When this feeling ceases to connect and identify with thoughts and objects it completely vanishes. What remains is an experience of being in which the Sense of individuality has temporarily ceased to operate. The experience may be intermittent at first but with repeated practice it becomes easier and easier to reach and maintain. When self enquiry reaches this level there is an effortless awareness of Being. In which individual effort is no longer possible since the I who makes the effort has temporarily ceased to exist. It is not self realisation, since the I thought periodically reasserts itself but is the highest level of practice. Repeated experience of this state of Being weakens and destroys the Vasana, mental tendencies which cause the I thought to rise and when their hold has been sufficiently weakened, the power of the Self destroys the residual tendencies so completely that the I thought never rises again. This is the final and irreversible state of Self realisation. This practice of self attention or awareness of the I thought is a gentle technic. Which bypasses the usual repressive methods of controlling the mind. It is not an exercise in concentration nor does it aim at suppressing thoughts. It merely evokes the awareness of the source from which the mind springs. The method and goal of self enquiry is to abide in the source of the mind and to be aware of what one really is by withdrawing attention and interest from what one is not. In the early stages effort in the form of transferring the attention from the thoughts to the thinker is essential but once awareness of the I feeling has been firmly established further effort is counter productive from then on it is more a process of being than doing. Of effortless being rather than an effort to Be. Being what one already is is effortless since being ness is always present and always experienced. On the other hand Pretending to be what one is not, ie.the body and the mind requires continuous mental effort even though the effort is nearly always at a subconscious level. It there for follows that in the higher stages of self enquiry, effort takes attention away from the experience of Being while cessation of mental effort reveals it. Ultimately the Self is not discovered as a result of doing anything but only by Being. Sri Ramana remarked. Do not meditate, Be Do not think that you are, Be Don’t think about Being, you are.

This is the finest recording I have heard, yet of Ramada's teachings. The professional who has read from Ramana's words does such an extraordinary job, it is a thrill to witness such mastery of oration. So Western (sounds like an American, or maybe Canadian) a dialect of English, uttering a translation of such profound Eastern knowledge, and from the very greatest of all modern Eastern masters is a "strange" experience, and one I never imagined could be possible. His words sound no less authentic than the traditional Indian recordings of English translations, and with less struggle to understand the Indian dialect. Would I could be a master of Hindi language, and "know" the original subtleties of meaning from Ramana's chosen words. Purity of intention (a challenge, but cultivatable) is perhaps, my only available remedy to overcome this unalterable "glitch". I'm too old to master such a difficult new language. I am most grateful for the mastery of this outstanding English speaking, orator. And profound thanks to the "producer" who initiated this wonderful project.

So true. And I would ask you to consider the following as perhaps underlying your feelings about what you are hearing: The reader is just incredible. So much care, so much understanding, so much intention to present the teachings in such a way as to not cause attention to himself but only to use his voice as a simple vehicle for transmission. He speaks with such intimacy -- intimacy with the listener and equal intimacy with the author of the words. There is a word "channelling" which I do not like the connotations of but for the sake of using language I would say he is channelling the truth behind the words and removing the illusion of separation between the sentiment as put forth and the reception of said sentiment. All resistance is free to fall away naturally. It is the resistance which is falling, not the "I". There is nothing to fear and the speaker consoles us in that knowledge. This is an expression of oneness. A transmission of the truth which is direct. He is speaking from the one heart we all share and his clarity about that removes all obstacles to reception. This man is a radiant jewel.

Modern Psychiatry has come up with weird terms like Depression and tries to project them as disorders. But in essence depression is nothing but an advanced state of seeking. It is when a person gets bored/tired of the mundane things in life and starts seeking higher happiness. In other words, it is a state in which a person starts questioning the very perspective that most people take as granted. So, if you have depression(as they say), feel good about it. Many enlightened saints started their Sadhana from a state of depression or vairagya.

I experienced the absolute or satori many years ago. Yet it left me as quickly as it had arrived. I think the experience arrived because at that time I was perfectly content and therefore I had no desires, or you could say that, I could have accepted whatever came my way whether for good or ill with equanimity, similar to Eckart tolle who even though he was suicidal at the moment of his awakening, he also had this acceptance of whatever came his way then so be it. You people who are already on the path of discovery will understand what to do if or when it arrives unlike me who as a young man with a family and a mortgage to pay, was as far off the path as it gets. My sudden enlightenment which happened whilst daydreaming in total silence remains the greatest moment of my life...yet without guidance can lead to nihilism and worse. All of a sudden you "the I" disappears and you are formless all knowing taking place in absolute silence, absolute stillness, in infinite emptiness and absolute bliss. So here I am 30 years later seeking what I found and lost all those years ago. Good luck with your search and a special thanks to the Uploader. Ramana along with nissargardata are definitely the real deal.
@atgunchev
@atgunchev 4 года назад
This absolute silence, absolute stillness, infinite emptiness and absolute bliss is right now. It always is. The "I" never finds it and never loses it. The "I" only adds itself to it and steals the show. When the "I" goes away the absolute doesn't suddently come up. It's here already, always and forever. The "I" only obstructs it. I = thinking = seeking. It's the same thing. To seek the absolute is futile. It's a contradiction. It's seeking the lack of seeking. It's wishing for no whishing. It's effort towards no effort. It's waiting for absence of waiting. It's thinking about lack of thinking. It's going nowhere. The game is already over. The I, thinking, wanting, seeking, wishing, doing... it already lost. It's like a sportsman who continues to play after already losing the game. You lost, Mark. The absolute doesn't care if you accept it or not. You lost anyway. You came here to challenge the absolute in the game of life, but you never stood a chance. You thought you can control this body better. You believed you were doing well. Until the infinite erased you for a moment. And then you came back and realized how poor you were. The little, limited you against the infinite. You can't do it better. Not even close. Seeking the end of the game is still playing the game. You already lost, Mark. You lost the moment you started the game of "I", thinking, wishing, seeking, doing. Game over.

when i was around 10-11 i became painfully aware of certain things that goes on in me without my control or power to stop it. like swallowing the saliva every minute or so, or like blinking of the eyes. and this somehow made me feel trapped. and then i would notice that i was not in control of my thoughts either, and i became obsessed with finding the root of my thoughts. where do they come from and what are they before they even become a thought or intention? what is there before intention!? there must be something there before it becomes words in my mind. what is that invisible thing that can form words and ideas from nothing, and how is it related to me? how do i even get to control it? i would sometimes sit for long stretches of time pondering this deeply. needless to say i didn't succeed in finding out where thoughts originate. but i remember in that period i suddenly entered a state of great inner quietness. it followed me for several days, a state of strong internalization in which i felt no desire to speak at all. it felt very good to be in that state but school made it almost impossible to remain in it, so after 2-3 days i had to become my talkative person again.

His main teaching of self-inquiry seems to me to be leading to the simple realization, that the self (Atman?) within us is part of the eternal (Brahman/God?). I experienced this feeling first when I'm alone in the forest, when I listen to the wind, etc. I also then realize the illusion of time. I never put forth any effort to a certain goal either. I merely felt the need to connect with "the true world" as I like to call it. This also led me to observe nature very closely, and to observe the smallest things observable to the eye and to soak up all the detailed expressions of my surroundings. All the while, for years I wanted to lose my disgust and fear of spiders. I made it a habit to not kill them whenever I found them in my apartment anymore, but to gently put them out the door. I was leading myself towards a more gentle and peaceful life out of a drive from within myself to do so. All the while, dark, especially sexual, urges remained to be part of my soul. How does Maharshi’s method of self-inquiry fit in with our individual selves, Karma and Dharma? And how does this help me to find out about my true intentions as a human being and my Dharma, and how does it help me to explore my shadow? Even though since my transcendental insights on my long walks I have matured by shedding materialistic desires and to a fairly good extent the feeling of seperateness from other human beings, other desires, sexual and darker, mostly obscured tendencies don't seem to have left me. They visit me in my dreams and make their presence known. Anyone able to provide his or her own insight on these questions is greatly appreciated.

@@IAMinfiniteandfree.I see your point of view. But that’s not the point of self inquiry. The point of self inquiry is to realize the self. The self needs nothing and is all. Do we need a house a wife a kids and a job ? Some people do and others don’t. You can have as much responsibility as you like or no. I think once you realize the self the struggle is dropped. You can have the house,the wife the kids but not the struggle. The struggle is gone. You won’t be sad if it all vanished. If there was a meteor heading for earth and you knew that everything would be annihilated would you struggle anymore? The answer is probably not. You would have accepted your fate and thus the struggle would be dropped. Now you just became the witness. That’s where the true I is. Become the witness,dropping the struggle and accepting what it is. If you can do something about do it. That’s it.

You are composed of the Self, the being self, the Self behind waking and sleeping. The Self that experiences your waking and sleeping State. That self is the same in all beings. That Self is the Soul. That Self is the absolute realty of God. You can't help but to always be that. That is you now, and will always be you. You can not attain being that which you have always been. You have always been and will always be that which alone exist.

While I am grateful to the uploader for making this video, this technique is unlikely to work for most people. It made me aware of Ramana Maharishi, the Self and that was a good starting point for getting into Vedanta. Ramana himself admitted he was not a teacher. Although he was Self-realized he was not a qualified teacher with the means of knowledge to help set someone free. I recommend reading up on traditional non-dual Vedanta. I was fortunate to discover a good teacher of Vedanta called James Swartz. He makes Vedanta very easy for westerners to understand. He has a few Self Inquiry videos on RU-vid. Better yet you can purchase his books and audio on self inquiry. Knowledge of the Self can only be realized and actualized by a qualified mind and through a proper means of knowledge. Ramana's enlightenment is very rare case of extracting the knowledge of the limitless Self from a limited experience.

I recommend starting with the books "How To Attain Enlightenment" by James Swartz & "Bhagavad Gita - The Divine Song" by Rory B MacKay Here's a short video series to get started: ru-vid.com/group/PL6y1kywnAG1wxuv1HSqJPzUQ2Jl89MBnJ

There isnt a better or more qualified,more knowledgable teacher in the 20th century then Ramana.maharshi.Also his teaching alot of the time was in silence,much more powerful then words.I guess thats another thing you failed to research. When ramana said he wasnt a teacher he didnt mean he was no good at it! He meant the outside guru or teacher is just a milstone and the real inner guru,the satguru will take you home.Also,Yoganannda and Mahatma Gahdi both went out of their way to go and visit ramana at the ashram they named after ramana because he spent 50 yrs there. Ramana didnt go visit them.lol. OK So You should learn a little more before leaving such an uninformed post. knowledge of the self can only be realized when your consciousness,that started to become aware of its existence when the body is about 2 1/2 to 3 FORGETS ITSELF. It is prior to mind. Also enlightenment is definately not experiencial because the small illusory i vanishes.so there is no experience.of enligfhtenment. WHEEW That was alot of stuff..ramanna went to an ashram when he was only 16 yrs old and stayed there until his death in his 70s.nisargadatta is 2nd only to ramana in the 20th century.

There must be association with objects for transformation. Thus because the Self is not associated with objects, there can be NO SELF TRANSFORMATION. A movie screen is not changed by the playing of movies on it.

I am curious and I am sure many others are too. The core philosophy of Advaita Vedanta is experiencing Brahman. Most likely through self-enquiry by direct method. Not sure how long the other method "devotion" works or not. The late Ramana Maharishi was a big proponent of self-enquiry and so is the Ramakrishna Order, the four Adi Shankaracharya maths etc. How many people have experienced Brahman via direct method? How long is the average training of self-enquiry to experience Brahman take? These are fundamental questions. I hope the experts here can answer it. Perhaps the experts can find out and reply here? I posed the same question to the Ramana Maharishi ashram folks but did not hear back.

if i'm understanding correctly (and this is greatly helping with my own awakening), sitting in meditation and concentrating on the breath for example, one only learns to quieten the mind. but by enquiring within, such a using the enquiry "who am i" one goes to the source of the mind, and realises that the "i" thought is not the self. by using this initial thought of "'i" one can see beyond it (or beneath) it and go to the source. is this why ramana does not encourage sitting meditations for long periods? because every day, in whatever sitting position, or whatever we are encountering, we can use this enquiry and live every day in the state of being the true source of all thoughts and phenomena? my journey recently has been sitting in long periods of meditation but i feel myself opening up to the stillness much more by just using this technique of enquiry, and it feels amazing :)

So called 'Self-abidance' in the way of 'atma vichara' or 'self-enquiry meditation' helps in short bursts throughout 'the day' (electrical engineers refer to it as; 'Non-destructive implosive charge-compression' - defining and optimising perception/metabolism) but to hold it all 'day' often results in migraines, due to build up of plasma in the dreamt 'head/brain' - so yeah, I hear ya/feel your pain. That said, until it starts hurting/becomes uncomfortable (due to accumulation of plasma/charge) its awesomely effective (and for doing 'it' you can expect peak sensory perception and accelerated metabolism) The trouble is is that 'we' (as the temporal/imaginary 'avatar') or 'objective-body-mind' (i.e. common consciousness of 'waking' or dream) are trying be pure timeless Awareness (pure subjectivity) whilst enjoying and pretending to be 'in linear time' which is a complete contradiction in terms, so its a real 'pickle' to say the least! - the apparent 'dream -brain' is just not interested, because extended meditation is painful for 'it' frankly, 'its' just designed to and wants to continually and schizophrenically abstract a 'future' and a 'past', that's its apparent function, to abstract 'division' and 'linear-time' and in the most sophisticated way possible, the apparent dream-brain is only content while its simultaneously rendering and troubleshooting its narrative and nonsense, and so, its pretty hopeless, there's just no 'end' to the 'minds/brains' nonsense, to the perfectly 'constructed' illusion (due to 'constructive wave-interference') We are only our true Self (verb) that is to say pure & timeless Awareness; non-binary, non-linear & non-computational (as opposed to imaginary temporal Consciousness) when in 'deep-dreamless-timeless-bodiless-sleep' in which there is no imaginary 'objective body-mind' to account for 'it' (to account for that pure & timeless awareness or NON-collapsing wave-function')

Question: I wonder how can someone do this practice healthily without “premuterely bypassing”. I am afraid that by doing this I will deny my “ego sufferance”, which is there and I think it should be recognized and not diminished in itself. How can I get rid of the self that creates sufferance while acknowledging it’s pain and not turning my back to it because “not the real deal”?
