You can't get a 1K car in this economy that actually runs. 5K is what you pay for "actually runs" and 10K is what I consider the threshold of "good enough for A-B." 1K won't even pass inspection. My first car was $1990 and it was a '98 Saturn SC1. I had to literally fill the crankcase with oil every time I filled the tank with gas. Every time I hit a hill greater than 30° I would watch my tachometer have a seizure and I would pray to God that I didn't stall. Next car I owned was $4998. It was a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The brakes all had to be immediately replaced. And the suspension. There were serious electrical issues. And an exhaust leak. After having the car for six months my catalytic converter literally fell off. I just left it on the side of the road 😂. It got me though school but it was such a massive POS and I went into debt just paying for repairs on it. I now drive a Corolla and I have no complaints. I gotta disagree with Dave somewhat here. Obviously don't buy a Bentley if you are in debt but a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla is a perfectly fine car to buy. They also will probably outlive you.

Either get a room, or a studio, or move somewhere else. It is my understanding that Southern Florida is a hot real estate market. That's not ideal if you don't make enough to live there. Your best option is to move if you can't find anything within your budget. You gave some lame, emotional excuses in your other comment. If they can't find teachers in that location, they'll investigate why and stumble across the high rents. If they want to attract teachers, they'll raise the salaries, but that's not your concern. Your concern is to move to a location where the salary is good enough to pay your bills. If the shoe is too small for your foot, don't force it to fit.

@scottdunn1371
@scottdunn1371 Год назад
A $1000 car is not worth it as you will spend $1000’s on maintenance and not be reliable. However, we got a brand new hail damaged Rav4 for $17K (in 2018). Find something like that with 100K miles on it for $8000-10,000 and it will be reliable for years still but get you $10K+ out of debt. At some point safety and reliability need to factor in to Dave’s advice. But if you want a $20K car, you should be able to pay cash for it and have a substantial 401(k) balance already.

So I’m in a dilemma, I have 6 year old car. I owe a chunk of change. I’m literally broke. I want to sell the car because of well.. Dave and I want out of debt. My parents who make 6 figures are telling me not to get an older car because older car have problems but they design new stuff to not last on purpose to get you to buy the new. But parents saying gonna be harder to find the parts for older cars. Like it’s almost an excuse to keep the newer car and not get rid of it to get out of debt. I want Dave’s help! 😭
@penguin12902
@penguin12902 Год назад
Look at your car payment. What is it? Maybe $500 a month? Do you really think an older car is gonna need a $500 repair every month? The most expensive car repair I've had in my life was like $2,000 for a new transmission. That's only 4 months of car payments. The other 8 months still go in the bank. People with money like driving newer cars, not because car payments are cheaper than paying for repairs, it's because they don't like the HASSLE of a car breaking down. Find a cheaper reliable car, (Honda, Toyota, etc) have an independent mechanic inspect it before you buy it, and you should come out way ahead in the long run.
@kiwi8476
@kiwi8476 Год назад

@kiwi8476
@kiwi8476 Год назад
@@penguin12902 Plus, on top of the repairs for newer cars. All the software they are putting and gadgets.. They are purposely making your car "break" so you kinda can't fix that by going to get a new part. Like our cell phones, they are slowing our phones down and making them glitch, you can't fix that by taking it to a store. Only way to fix that is to buy the newest one out. They can't make them break through software in older cars.

I wouldn't go as far as budgeting $1,000 for a car. If you are paying $1,000 I would really look over it thoroughly because there is probably tons of rust, bent frame or something that will lead to big problems. I agree with Dave's plan he laid out but I'd sell the car and look for another one under $4,000. In that case he can get an older Toyota or Honda which he can buy with 100k miles on it and still get 100k miles out of it.

Here is whats missing and no one is talking about it. When you're a man and you are in a relationship the thing a woman wants to see the most is that you are stable and she can count on you. This is even more important when she is pregnant. If she says she is pregnant the next day the car would have been gone. She would have said "why". I would have said a baby is coming so i have to get on top of things and make sure that when she is due we are debt free and have $10k in the bank just in case.

So I've heard Dave consistently tell people to buy a $1000 car. What kind of car can you actually buy for $1k these days? As far as I can tell, you'll get a rusty chunk of metal with a blown engine, broken transmission and no tires. If you buy some junky $1k car these days, you'll be putting $1k into fixing it within 30 days, then again within another 60 days, then regularly every 90 days for as long as you own that junk. It's going to constantly break down on you. Get something reliable. That's probably going to run you a minimum $5-6k. $1k just isn't going to get you anything these days. Dave seems so out of touch with everything in the real world.
