as someone who has been doing this stuff for over 20 years i got to say you have the diagnosing skills that many people with even my experience lack. i love this channel, keep up the good work joe
If you take the top end apart I'll bet you find that the rings are not staggered properly or in upside-down. Anyway, great job on the repairs you did. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Yup that's happened to me on an old Briggs on a 70s garden tractor. I never knew some rings were directional - and neither did they guy who was in there before me apparently 😂. Good reason to read the manuals.
that's what I was thinking too, either rings or valve system. Really runs great Joe, you did a superb job! I've never seen a woodruff key shear off like that.
For $700 its a no lose project ... get like 4 vids out of it, spend a few hundred and sell it for 3 er 4k once the smokin is fixed. Also great op to show people many small probs to look for, aka wrong washers ... takin time to look at schematics of engine systems is golden lesson ...
I admire your patience and logical thinking diagnosing the issues. I used to strip and rebuild UK Mini's in my late teens in the 70's. Never had much money and needed to continually repair to keep on the road to get to and from work.
Good job, great video. I would have avoided someone else's "modifications" but props to you, and Vinny. Seeing your joy riding, the flag is a nice touch, as much fun as a person can have with their clothes on. Keep up the hard work
I'd agree, but it wasn't a literal 'basket case' like ya see sometimes, so ya start to assume the seller did some easy wiring mistake or something if you're lucky. Don't always get lucky though
Always the shafts. Do a lot of those repairs here on those quads, keep them in shop stock with seals, etc. Great job and vid. Impressed with how you've come so far so fast as a mechanic. Dig into everything just builds your overall knowledge, great job!!
I have an 02 and watching this was very helpful just to watch if I come into these problems. I thought it was the timing from the begining but you showed it was much more then that! Thanks!
Looks like you are crop dusting....lol. You are a master of fixing other people's inept repairs. Some people should NEVER EVER work on mechanicals. Great job!
Yeah, I agree on the rings. That's a lot of riding for it to not clear up. I've done the same with one of my top end builds and didn't get the rings on correctly. Happens to the best of us. But yeah, new valve seals too.
Great video. It's challenging and I bet frustrating finding and fixing other people mistakes. You have to be very skilled and knowledgeable to take on these projects. Thanks
Joe -- This Old Guy Loves All your videos. I have a 77 RM Suzuki to replace the piston which lost one of the tiny pins that holds the rings from turning. Back together engine would start & run gets warm then quits. Never saw that happen before, took me a while to figure out. LOL Here's a tip for All your Readers.... Plastic Oil bottles are designed with the spout at the far end to be poured with the spout Upside not down. This Prevents the Glug Glugging after starting to pour with the majority of the oil at the bottom half of the bottle & allows air to get into the bottle more quickly to prevent a mess. In some cases if the cap hole dia. is large enough like in autos you don't even need a funnel. Prevents a Big Mess. Try It -- You might like It
First rule of thumb is if your going to rebuild an engine , get a repair manual and it will show and tell all you need to know . I just rebuilt a 02 700 twin and it all went smooth . Did watch a lot of videos to get the you tube mechanics take on things . I learned a lot and used some valuable info only experienced mechanics would know . Like the channel, keep up the good work 👍 And I’m sure when the first guy built it he didn’t prime the oil pump which is required 1st start up
I sure hope the guy who rebuild this motor in the first place watches this and learned something. Otherwise he should probably NOT work on engines!! Wow.. Hey, at least you know what to do and can fix it. You got it for a fair price too so that's a plus.
Ok for the smoke. Check the spark plug, does it have oil residue on it? Pull the exhaust and look into the head, you can look up the exhaust ports and see the stems of the valves. If the exhaust valve seals are bad you will see the oil seeping down. It’s not real easy to look at the intake valve seals and oil leaking because the fuel coming from the carb washes the oil off. If the spark plug looks oil fowled. It’s ether intake valve seals or oil scraper rings. If the spark plug looks good it’s exhaust valve seals. I’d say it’s not the piston rings. Because you have such high compression, I’d bet more on valve seals.
May not of replaced the valve guide seals or the rings are in the wrong order. I commented before you talked about the seals. Great vid thought. Keep up the good work.
A talented mechanic owns a torque wrench, doesn't grease paper oil gaskets, applies RTV to case splits, lubricates ceramic water seals, etc. This guy is a backyard mechanic, a decent one, but he's making a lot of little mistakes that will bite him eventually.
@@JoshuaJonahtalent has NADA to do with what tools you own. I'm just curious why you watch and comment on so many of his videos if you are not getting back anything. Jealousy hurts! He is definitely a talented mechanic. Stop being such a troll. Didn't your mom teach you, if you have nothing good to say, then just shut you flaps?!
And I have worked on race and trail sleds, and ATVs for 30 years, and have always greased 1 side of my oil gaskets, A. cuz it helps it stick, and B. I believe it helps seal micro pores. Never once had a problem. I am pretty sure he has done this stuff a time or 2. Idk, there's something about trolls who talk shit, that sounds like jealousy that gets under my skin.
Dang, there is an auto parts store in the area that had to re-order several cases of RTV sealer! There is a shit-ton of RTV on that right hand stator/gear case alone! Might be time to do a proper reseal job on all that stuff, and, yes, the rings never seated correctly in the cylinders, thus the heavy blue smoke. I've seen plenty of 2-strokes that smoked less! Maybe another video on a re-ring/top end job? You will get all the other issues addressed in short order, Joe! Great deal, great video series! Thanks man!
great video Joe, yeah could be valve stem seals, rings not spaced properly, or ring in upside down, interesting to see what the cause is when you tear it down. I love tearing down, and rebuilding heads, lapping valves, it's fun for me lol.
Love the video my Polaris Sportsman 500ho Did the same thing smoked a lot And I replaced The valve guide seals. And it fixed the problem. Thank you for all your great videos and knowledge. Hope you had a great 4th of July
Yeah joe looks like your right I would say valve oil seals as well either that or rings and oil ring as well soon find out 😉look forward to the big reveal other than that still a good buy sounds good feel sorry for the neighbours right enough haha take care mate and all the best to you all 👍👌🔧🔧🔧❤️🏁🏁
If original owner messed that much already. I’d be pulling apart jug to inspect everything like are ring ends staggered and piston circlips correctly installed
Wow you said the guy rebuilt the upper end but why is it smoking so much I bought a TRX 400 for 1,500 bucks and the guy said it had an accident and it back of a truck so all the rips in the plastic I sewed them with upholstery thread and glued all the nuts with super glue but it runs great but eventually the rubber thing on the pitcock crumbled I had to buy the whole thing that was almost a hundred bucks and all I needed was the rubber round ring with four holes it's a special rubber piece that goes in the pitcock and it runs perfect and no smoke at all and this is a race quad I don't think it was ever abused I bought it from some guy that had Corvettes in the driveway and he had plenty of money so I think I got a pretty good deal I love working on these things it's actually a lot of fun thanks for the video and the knowledge God bless
Back in the very early 80's when I was building and hotrodding old Mopars a guy in the neighborhood I grew in rebuilt a 350 and put in in a 68 Camaro and it smoked like a train, it was terrible. I asked him if he staggered the ring gaps and he said "no, I lined up the gaps like they are supposed to be." So you never know what you might get with someone else's work. Fun project and still worth the $700.
Can't wait to see what surprises you find when you take the head off It's probably the valve seals but I still think you're gonna find a few more Issues besides that.
Yo 2vin awesome wort as always, so I’ve just rebuilt a rmz250 put oil in and started straight up, put coolant in and it went straight in the engine 😢 stripped it back down can’t see anything wrong all looks good and help guys 😩👍
Great job! I found that putting seals (like the water pump seal) in the freezer overnight will shrink them "just enuf" to make pounding them in with a socket/extension easier. 2 cents
could just be the loud pipe but doesn't sound like clutches are opening all the way. High pitch all the time. Not sure how you manage to put out so many great videos but I enjoy watching.
I love those plastic stitchers. Just repaired my king quad 300 plastics with it. I've done a bunch of other stuff. Definitely looks better than ziptie stitching.
Reminds me of the gazillion marine gearboxes I've worked on. There is no cheating with gearbox seals. Don't care what weekend plans you've got. Put the tools down. Get the right parts. Do it the right way.
thanks for the video i enjoyed it. i wouldnt keep running it because there might be a broken ring in there hacking away at the cylinder wall. not gonna lie, i thought i saw faint lighting on the flags might wanna check again. if not id def fix that, would look cool.
i have a 2004 polaris 700 sportsman had it for over 4 years just do oil changes never let me down --- if i remember right they only have valve seals on the intake side -- i wonder what kind of kit he got could it be a china kit if yes thats your problem --- i also seen i guy take a 700 turn it into a 800 --- good luck -- great video like always
I think he put the original rings in ,sure you are going to find out yikes you are doing a fine job ...like watching a good mechanic at work keep us amused :)
Also changing that over to a 700 hopefully thr guy put the right springs and made the right adjustments for the clutch, they are set up differently between the 600 and 700, you may get alot more power and speed out of it changing the clutch to 700 springs
Props to you for taking on a wannabe Mechanic's failed attempt. Been turnin wrenches since i could hold one. Compression rings are good. Oil rings are in wrong. 👍
Well,,,lm ashamed to admit it cause I've been riding ATVs all my life,,and many times I would have to work on them and would just give up after a while,,strange thing is l can take a V8 engine apart and fix anything wrong with them and can put many of them back together including torque specks without a book,,and since I have been watching your programs I realize that I just gave up to soon,,however I have learned so much from you,,and the being ashamed part,,lol is because lm 63 years old,,l should know all this as much as myself and seven grown children ride all year long,,fun in the summer and hunting in the winter,,but I have fixed several of our ATVs and side by side's since watching your videos,,,great programs brother....
I was wondering what Chuck is up to these days? Is he in college? Or maybe just working. I'm should we would love to know. Since he was in so many episodes of your site. Anyway, Love the new machine. I say, "if you can't fix it, It ain't broke". lol
What kind of piston and cylinder kit? eBay chyneisum perhaps?? Let’s see a compression and leakdown test. Heck even a bore scope. It might have a set of those high performance oval piston rings from across the pond.
It's not "smoking" per say.. but it definitely has a very good mosquito repellent exhaust system installed... now THAT is worth the money.. lol.. runs great, though.. CHEERS!!
@14:45 If you put the casing in the oven @ 200`-300` and the seal in the freezer they will in most cases just fall into place or with very little pounding. Great for bearings as well. Edit: Can't wait to see!!! LOL Well there is a reason why they are called Shadetree mechanics.
Love watching your videos i have learned alot just from watching your videos keep up the good work would love to see you do a grizzly 660 to see what you think of it
