@HomeAquatictsHobby how do you make your water harder? My ph is at around 7.2 the ammonia, nitrates, chlorine, etc seem to all be just fine but my guppies tend to stay at the top of the tank and almost every other day I find a dead one. No fungus on them or anything. I've tried everything! I don't know what is wrong other than the water is soft 🤷🏻‍♂️ help please!

The best EVER plant for protecting fry is riccia when it's floating because it's so dense. You should try and get some! It works well for me!

Hello im a ameture guppy breeder . Im have a 7 gal and a 5 gal tanks . Great news is that I have 2 moisac half AOC (male and female)with bi colour tail and snakeskin pattern near the head and before the plain black colour starting just after dorsal. I also have a red tuxedo male *not the half black* . I managed to ''multi breed'' them and the fry had amazing colour . Females mostly had a blue moisac pattern and a yellow female (with red tail) and two males . One very close to the original half black AOC but with a signature red strip (that the red tux had before the dorsal and after the eyes) with the original tail colour but with a strong red colour colour at the bottom and top of the tail (horizontally ) and yellow in mid almost like vertical bars. This guy also has a strong mettalic colour almost like nebula steel. The second fry is red with the grey . Tail has red tail with a faded moisac pattern . In this guy the signatuter mark of the red tux is there but it is like it will spread horizontally at the top of the fish . The pecundal is fully red . As the fish is growing I am starting to see voilet at the tip of the pecundal . Literally voilet. The bottom horizontal part of the fish is showing mettalic sheen . I. Believe the fish is still growing and will require more one two months to fully show colour . NOTE MY GUPPIES ARE OF THE OLD FASHION STRAIN WITH A LARGER AND STRONGER BODY. Im planning to breed those with a true nebula steel to obtain the ultimate metalic colour i frefer. I think i will then breed those with another nebula steel guppy (same strain)a few backcrosses to obtain a two pure strains (red and half black AOC) please tell me home aquatics and all others what you think about it . Another thing is that i brought these for 50 ruppes (something 0.75 dollars). You wont get half black AOC pic on net . Those sre slightly diff from those that i have . Note these are short tailled ones . Not the long triangular tailed one. I will create my own long tailed strain guppies. So that they can handle that tail. Genetic mutations may cause long tails in the nebula steel strain i will create . I will call that strain - bone steel or titanium guppies. Tha tail pattern is not yet set due to the stock availability. Home aquatics you ca also try this idea if you want to . You have more resources than me so you have a better chance . Im a seventh grader and will open a youtube channel in a year or two . Name will be - UNIVERAL INDIAN AQUATICS so that all can see my experiances and ideas and the guppies im talking right now. I would like if you used this idea and show this to others :-)))

Back when I had fish, I remember I had a home-bred male that looked identical to your black and red males. If I remember correctly he was called 'Mr Toasty Jr.', because he resembled his father, Mr Toasty, who was an ordinary store-bought mutt, but I guess he carried _some_ specific genes that passed into Jr.. He probably isn't alive anymore, since that was nearly two years ago now, and he was already approaching a year old when I sold him on. Oh well, lets hope he had his own fry (I don't ever recall him having a batch when I had him, as he wasn't around females all that much once he was fully grown) and that his genes live on in his descendants. You know, this really makes me want to start up my tank and start my own 'pride' (I like to compare guppies with lions because there are only a few males and the rest are females, much like in lions) again. Just food for thought, but maybe it would be possible to get Jr.'s descendants back into their ancestor's home-tank if I went to the same shop I sold him to? It was a high-quality, small non-chain store so I don't imagine it to be too improbable that his genes managed to stay in the shop to this day. Although this is confirmation-biased, if I recall correctly there weren't exactly that many other males, maybe 2 or 3 others, so it's likely that he impregnated at least a couple of females with his sperm. On the other hand, if any descendants are living there their genes will be highly muddled by that point, and will probably only be at best something like 1/32 (or have ancestor as great-great grandparent) Mr. Toasty Jr., and probably won't resemble him in any way. Regardless, it would still be nice to pick up some nice-looking guppies from the shop and breed them into a hardy (I'm sure you know home-bred guppies will always be hardier than store-bought guppies), colourful and genetically strong strain of guppy. Perhaps I could try to create my own purple guppies (since purple is my favourite colour and purple guppies aren't exactly common)? Sure, it would take time and patience, but it's pretty simple genetics if you think about it: breed a red and a blue guppy together, and once you get a purple guppy keep breeding it with other purple guppies until it's the only colour present, and by all means don't let the purple guppies breed with any other colour of guppy, especially a dominant-coloured one, as it will take many generations to fix the colour and if it is a dominant enough gene the purple colour may never be fully recovered. Anyway, enough typing (I just run away with words once I get going), tell me your thoughts if you see this.

I have never ordered guppies on line. Always gotten them from a couple businesses. And i don't run a pure strain. I just. Select which of my males and a few females that i like to breed. I have produced some very beautiful guppies.

What kind of plant is that on top of the tank? It's got a nice root system and I'm having a hard time with the plants I'm growing above my tank because the roots aren't long enough. Right now I just have microgreens and millet growing but the roots aren't developing very well

The red one in the beginning is his Red Dragon Mosaic guppies. I bought some of those as fry, and they wound up being red dragon, purple mosaic, or another with black fins and a touch of yellow.. Perhaps they all are part of the same strain?

This is a nice video. I've been interested in starting up the hobby of breeding fish like guppies and mollies to try and see what fin and color variations I could get, but I literally had no idea on how I would get rid of the fish that I didn't need or couldn't care for. This is a great idea and I think that in the future, when I have the funds to officially start, when I get to a point where I have too many fish, I'll bag them up and see if any of the small pet stores around want them. I might just donate since I'm not doing it for the money, but using them to get store credit or just outright trading them for fish food sounds right up my alley! There are so many pet stores in my area, many of them specifically dealing with aquatic animals, and most of them being highly localized (not big chains like petco and petsmart). I've actually had a nice aquarium in the past. We filled the aquarium with plants and hiding places and just let it sit and grow a healthy layer of bio life before going to a local fish store buying a molly, a platy, and a guppy. All three fish were very heavily pregnant and within a few days filled our 60 gallon aquarium with their beautiful fry. We kept the mothers separated from their babies in a breeding box until they were a bit bigger, but even then the tank was filled with the plants and hiding holes. It was beautiful and I would just sit down and watch the fish from time to time. We later bought one of those tiny catfish and a few ghost shrimp to eat some of the stuff we couldn't clean ourselves and everyone just got along very well. I have to say that this story doesn't have a happy ending. My family had a planned month-long vacation coming up and we asked out neighbors to take care of our pets. At this point, we had a dog in addition to our aquarium. When we returned, they told us they didn't know how it had happened, but all of our fish were dead. The filter and heater had both somehow gotten unplugged, and the neighbors hadn't noticed since they didn't know much about aquariums in the first place (we had only told them how to feed our fish, we weren't worried about technical difficulties). In addition to this, our dog had been left outside a majority of the time because they didn't want her to destroy the furniture or want to have to clean up after her if she went to the bathroom (we usually have out back door open 24/7 and she was a very good dog. We live near the coast in California, and the temperatures are ok for this in both winter and summer, usually only getting 40*F at the lowest and 90*F at the highest). She had somehow gotten into the shed and eaten something. She also died a little less than two weeks later. We were very upset to say the least, but we weren't really angry at our neighbors. It wasn't their intention to kill our pets and they were very remorseful, but we haven't let them watch our pets since, nor will we in the future. We now have two beautiful dogs and a turtle now calls our aquarium home along with two large comets (feeder fish he wasn't able to catch and have outgrown him), but I do long to have a beautiful aquarium like I had in the past. I've tried breeding bettas in the meantime, but never had much success. I couldn't afford many fish and the females always rejected the males' bubble nests to my dismay. I finally gave up on that dream also until I had the funds and resources to try again in the future. For now I'll stick to breeding plants, haha. We've hot some very nice orchids, some juvelile apple trees with branches from other apple varieties successfully grafted onto them, and other fruit trees, flowers, cacti, succulents, and a (vegetable garden) growing both in our front and back yards. My most proud accomplishment is my six-year-old avocado tree started as an experiment after saving a pit from an avocado we used to make guacamole. Haha, this went on longer than I expected. I wish you luck in your breeding experiments, wish me luck in mine :)

Wait, so male guppies can look like females?! Ive been trying to breed this "female" i got months ago and "she" just hasnt ever had a brood! The only problem is I have another guppy that IS a female and just had a brood yesterday, she doesn't have nor had a gravid spot :( i got the (first) "female" (rainbow tailed i guess?) from a female only tank so this is just blowing my mind haha
