That's a rare bird. I traveled with my folks to Europe in the mid-60's and those amps were the cat's meow...as far I could tell for a ten year old. Britain still had significant restrictions or least very high duties on imports and you didn't see Fenders over there. That's why Hank Marvin's red Strat and Jeff Beck's Telecaster (Esquire?) were such a big deal...you couldn't just go out and buy a Fender anything back then in the UK, even if you had the money.

Hi..Frank here from THE MEMPHIS SUNS...My friend found one these Selmer Amps on the side of the street!..Its the piggigback amp in the middle of the second photo you showed...I had a rehearsal and our upright bass player plugged intio it...And I couldn't believe how fantastic the amp sounded...So powerful and warm, the sound is amazing I'd say the best sounding bass amp I'd ever heard..I was more than surprised...Anyhow thanks for sharing...Cheers Frank

Ist amp ever was a Selmer little Giant practice-amp, it had a very warm tone and could overdrive just by playing harder. Londons West-end was the true home of Selmer, from Leicester sq to Charing Cross rd "Selmer" was everywhere. I had a Saturday job in the shop in the 70s! We were so naive ,we wanted VOX and Fender for Guitars and Hiwatt and Marshall for bass. Thanks "Joe and Larry and Anthony"...thanks for showing us a real piece of Rocknroll history Ms Fazio!

Really enjoyed this video - thanks so much, Colleen. I have a slightly newer Selmer combo with a blue/grey covering, the same push-button tone set-up and the magic eye for the vibrato...and a massive single 15in speaker that I think is a Goodmans, not a Celestion. It's due for a total rebuild, and I can't wait to play through it again. When I was getting into guitar in England in the 70s, Selmer amps were regarded as a bit second-rate and undesirable compared to AC30s, never mind Marshalls, Hiwatts, etc, but we were so wrong about them - like so much else. Keep up the good work, Colleen, you're a marvel!

I made new schematics of these Croc Zodiacs and Thunderbirds (and a few others) back when I was doing repairs. I still have a rebuilt Zod Twin30 (it had been heavily modified). Cool amps...you can push down combinations of those pushbuttons to get a plethora of sounds.

I bought a secondhand Selmer amp in the late 60s. It was a 100w with 4 Celestion speakers in a single cabinet on castore. I had to take castors off because it was impossible to get into the boot of my car. It also had a series of those push button switches. It had a Fender style layout with the chassis inverterd up the top and inputs at the front. The 4 four EL-34s put out a tremendous amount of heat!

That type of "magic eye" tube was typically used as a center-tuning indicator in high-quality radios and hifi tuners of the 1950's to early 60's; The 2 green lightbars would almost touch in the center when you were tuned exactly to the center of the station. Usually there would be a separate, slightly different magic eye that simply extended the lightstrip to the right as the signal strength was increased. These can be fairly expensive and difficult to find nowadays and I don't know if anybody is making new exact drop-in replacements, but at one time various magic eye tubes were even used as VU meters in portable reel to reel tape decks!

I had the exact same amp. It was just too loud, and I had a guy fit me a gain knob on the back. I then managed to get a Thunderbird twin 30. Much better due to lower power, better speakers (alnico Celestions) and the beautiful sounding reverb. Underrated, gorgeous amps! Good luck with the restoration.

The famous Selmer shop in London, where Eric Clapton bought his Les Paul, later became Soho Soundhouse, also a decent music shop, where I bought a very cheap Dearmond guitar and failed to become a world superstar. It lasted to about 15 years ago. It's now a Tex-Mex eatery. However cool it might look now, that logo was very old-fashioned!

That's a very cool amp. There's a picture of Jimmy Page taken around 1963-64, when he was a session guy at Olympic studios in London. He used it on things like the "Goldfinger" soundtrack, Petula Clark's "Downtown", Herman's Hermits, The Kinks, etc. long before any Yardbirds or Led Zeppelin. It's nice to see that you have plenty of work. It's better to have too much than not enough. I knew from the conversation we had at my house that you were gonna do well, and I am glad I was right. Bob Dylan said "You get older, and you start having hopes for other people besides yourself" Bob's observation certainly applies in your case, and I wish you well. I don't see our mutual friend much these days. I hope he's busy and doing well too. Hats off and CHEERS!!

Your channel has garnered you a wide acceptance as a competent, honest tech. Watching the service on that Selmer would have been awesome. Then again, it is more prudent to knock that pile of amps down, and bank that skrilla. I imagine once the smoke clears after these units are completed, you'll be needing to perform inventory, and order parts, components, and tooling supplies. You have built yourself a company from the ground up. It is to be admired, and inspirational for other girls to consider vintage amp repair and modification. #girlpower

No British amp company tried harder than Selmer. Unlike Vox (who were just content to make great amps), Selmer went totally over-the-top with the cosmetics and I love them for that. The push button switches look almost identical to the ones you'd find in a Hickok tube tester and they might not clean up reliably with just a spritz of contact cleaner; I've occasionally had to disassemble those tube tester switches to polish the contacts, and I hope you won't have to go through that here. Man this amp is a beast! Look at the size of those transformers! The transformer mounted to the inside of the cabinet appears to be step-up or step-down transformer; this amp was probably wired for 220VAC in England and needs a stepup transformer in order to run off of 110-120 volts here in America. I bet it weighs 100 pounds! The use of an EF86 Pentode tube is indeed very much like some early Vox amps but it's probably fortunate that the EF86 is used for the second gain stage, where the microphonics that those tubes are known for would be less of an issue compared to using it for the very first input gain stage. What does it use for output tubes? 6L6GC's, or perhaps Sylvania fat bottle 6CA7's (similar to EL34's but not a true pentode)? I would have expected the original factory tubes to be EL34's.....
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 8 месяцев назад
Addendum: Upon closer look it does appear that the output tubes are EL34's and the rectifier appears to be a GZ34....

Yup. That large grey transformer attached to the cab is the step-up transformer. Mine has a different looking one mounted differently. I’m not sure if Selmer attached them for export or if they were installed stateside by Selmer dealers.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 8 месяцев назад
@@sonotdown998 , I also forgot to ask: how loud is this monster? My guess is, LOUD! It, or the owner and his neighbors or bandmates, might benefit from the addition of a master volume. Normally I would say it should be kept as stock as possible but it looks like the preamp has already undergone some modifications. I wonder if schematics are available and if the amplifiers generally match the schematic.....
@sonotdown998
@sonotdown998 8 месяцев назад
@@goodun2974 Haha. Your assumption is correct. I have not tortured any bandmates with it-luckily for them it weighs a ton and I don’t wanna have to carry it up and down the three flights of stairs to the practice space. I also live in an apartment complex and do not want to have to deal with complaints from my downstairs neighbors-or those in adjacent buildings. Perhaps more importantly, I do not want to invite any more criticism of my noodling than absolutely necessary. I’ve also never played out with it because, again, it weighs a ton and is most likely “too loud” for smaller venues. (Though an acquaintance has one that he plays an organ through live and it’s not overpowering in that use/setting.) I also don’t wanna spill beer on it. Truth be told, I’ve never had it up loud enough to noticeably break up much at all since I was demoing it in the store I got it at. The other amps I have are a Deluxe Reverb and a Silvertone Twin Twelve. They’re waaaaaaay more practical given my needs. I’ve never played through any of the standard “loud” amps like, say, a (Fender) Twin, so I don’t know how it compares. The Selmer spends the majority of its time as a bookshelf in the rolling Anvil case I had made for it. It is, though, one of the coolest amps ever made and I’ve wanted one since I was a teenager. Sometimes I feel kinda bad about it. Though I guess everyone should be allowed at least one indulgence. Re the master volume: I wouldn’t wanna go messing around and modifying it. I have thought of getting some sort of attenuator for home use. I just never got around to exploring that option. I have schematics around here somewhere that I found online. I kinda remember the most legible schematic I found being for the Thirty and it’s “basically the same” as the Fifty. It has been a long while since I’ve studied them.

Its a step down transformer that was put in sometime in the mid-nineties. The idea was to keep the original 60’s Partridge 220v transformer intact (bc thats an integral part of the great sound with these) then it gets stepped down to 120v. However, because there are two output transformers the amp is heavy as all hell. The sound is so amazing though, the weight is worth it.

It's fake, synthetic crocodile or alligator skin. American alligators and especially American crocodiles nearly went extinct in the mid 1900s and were put on the endangered species list for a while, but alligator populations have bounced back and they are now "farmed", so nowadays you could probably get real alligator skin to cover an amp cabinet in! I bet you can get python skin from Florida due to the intensive effort to hunt and eradicate invasive Burmese pythons. Back in the 80s, David Lindley (RIP) had a Dumble Steel String Singer that was covered in python skin, which he used to play high gain lap steel slide guitar through for songs like his own version of Mercury Blues, and of course Running On Empty with Jackson Browne.

Hello, my son (12 yr old) just started playing guitar, was able to get a used fender 2011 blues deluxe, sounds great. My question the two large groove tube Gt 6l6r run hot @ 200 f on more should I put a cooling fan on them. Thank you Thank you Thank you

Is Selmer the Pete Best of guitar amps?

My amp for the last 20 years has been a 1969 Traynor Guitarmate 3 stuffed into the carcass of an old Selmer Zodiac (or possibly Thunderbird Twin 50?) circa 1963, that still has the original Goodmans Axioms in; I don't believe Celestion were the original speaker of choice for Selmer? It's such a great amp though heavy. The panel at the top of course is now redundant but is a great place to keep your slide and plectrums on a gig!

Coleen, if you can, just record the sound of it to us. That’s a unique opportunity to hear this kind of gear. This type of amp is lost in history.

It occurs to me that at the time this amp was built, American crocodiles and alligators had been hunted almost to extinction (especially the Crocs) and their skins would have been rare/expensive or unavailable (at some point they became legally protected against hunting). Now, however, alligators are farmed legally, and if an amp manufacturer wanted to, they could buy real alligator skins to cover the cabinets with.
