Stephen Dedalus This gave me a little motivation, thanks, I've been playing for 4 years now (I'm 16) and I'm hoping to go pro. Didn't play today but now I can't wait to go back tomorrow and play!

Fascinating to see how these wonderful instruments are made, it makes you understand why the really quality instruments cost so much. Also good to see these saxes still being made in Europe. I have a nice Yamaha tenor and a cheap Voggenreiter alto, but these Selmers look superb.

I am impressed with the extent to which Selmer saxophones are made by hand. No wonder why they produce such a beautiful tone, are balanced mechanically and have keys that move so easily and conform to hands and finges so well.

The sax speaks to a mans soul. When your down. No wind instrument can drive your feelings the way a sax can. It makes you think.

I bought a Mark VI Tenor in 1970. (M 180083). After 47yrs of constant playing (and 2 re-pads) he is still going strong. When I play other instruments using the same m/piece/reed set-up, I can hear the difference. A great horn. He has never let me down.

Brings back memories. I played the baritone sax in high school concert band in concerts, marching band, and to top it off went on the band trip to California (from Minnesota) in my senior year. Haven't played it since. Guess the band trip was always the goal.

I never thought that I would find THIS exact video ever again. I saw this way back in the day, on Sesame Street (maybe late 80's, early 90's) and I remembered it just a few minutes ago, just out of the blue, it came rushing back into my head, so I decided to look for a video on how saxophones were made, and, wouldn't you know it? I found the EXACT SAME VIDEO that I saw as a child, so many years ago!

it woud have been interesting to know how many processes are still carry overs from the original days when Selmer took over the Adolphe sax business and how many are new due to advances in technology. Never the less, it seems many other companies including those from Taiwan are making good saxophones these days.

@krikorsax unfortunately, that's the nature of that note, you can have it tuned up to some degree, but it will never be perfect, it all comes down to using your mouth to adjust, and if needed in lyrical sections, use an alternate fingering. My personal favourite alternate is the same fingering for low C#, with the octave key, quite in tune with a full sound.

for the flat c# do the following fingering: press just ring finger of the left hand together with the octave key (thumb left hand). This makes it a little higher and better sound. Very common fingering at the classical saxophone and always a good choice when going up to the higher d. Take care, Alex

Some of the skills here are employed by rocket engine manufacturers. Similar sheet metal forming techniques but now applied to very hard, brittle high temperature Inconel and tungsten. If you can build a saxophone, you can build key parts of a RS-26 rocket engine.

I haven't played in 20 years or more, but when I was in high school (30 years ago) everybody in the sax section at my high school was jealous of me because I had a 1952 "King Super 20" Tenor that weighed about 15 pounds all by itself. With the case it weighed almost as much as Baritone with it's case. My mom bought it for me from my private teacher for about $700 because he wanted to buy a brand new 1981 model himself. I don't have it anymore but I can't remember how I got rid of it.

For the middle c#, just press only the "ring finger" on your left hand (g-key) and the octave key. It will raise and doesn't sound so nosy. I use that for all long standing middle c#. These kind of alternate handles exist for a number of intonation of sound problems on the saxophone. Just keep trying!
