Selmer Vs Marshall - Treble & Bass Vs JMP 2204

In this video I compare a 1970s Selmer Treble and Bass 50 to a 1977 Marshall JMP 2204. I play both through the same 1971 Marshall 1960A 4x12 speaker cabinet (with its stock Pulsonic G12M25 75Hz Greenbacks). The Guitar is a 1975 Gibson Flying V.

@Vi1ko
@Vi1ko 4 года назад
From all the schematics I’ve seen Sovteks are NOT clones of the JCM800. The Mig50 is close to the old Plexi. But their higher gain “hotrod Marshall” style models are very different from JCM800. More different than many “original” boutique designs. The Mig60 has warm bias stages rather than the cold of the Marshall. The Mig50H and Mig100H use cascaded gain stages to drive the tone stack (and critically are the most overdriven preamp stages) rather than the DC cathode follower found in Plexis and most nearly all of the modified variants (including the JCM800). So while they may be in a similar family of amps they are very much their own thing. Which would make a comparison even more interesting!

Great video, you can tell that's a loud room! As a Selmer owner I prefer the Marshall... The Selmer was far more compressed, almost fuzzy and the bottom end was lacking. I gotta say, that Selmer sounds broken. I have three 50W TnBs - a crocskin, a mk3 and an SV like this one.. and none of them sound like that! At one point I was using a pair of TungSol EL34b in the SV (I think..) which did have some crazy compression going on. Not quite like this though. Full disclosure, the mk4 SV I have is very much modified, the tone stack and coupling caps tweaked, second stage cathode bypassed and I added a mid pot.. But even before all that it was still totally solid sounding and composed at full tilt. This one here needs some tlc.

Johan I'm surprised you didn't put the guitar through the Bass channel and overdrive that. If there was a criticism of the T'n'B 50 in the old days it's that it was brighter and less willing to break up. Of course with all the Boosts that came later the problem of break up disappeared. I don't know whether Selmer were looking to incorporate some of the 'brashness' found in the AC30 when it came to Pre-amp design ? I've got two Selmers. A 10 Watt Concorde (Crocodile) combo and a T'n'B 50 Mk II. Both apart at the moment in the middle of re-capping. I've had the Concorde since '74; it was old even then. Now has a 'Black Back' in it ... My Mk II 50 must've belonged to someone of note; Jim Marshall gave it to a friend of his, the father of my girlfriend at the time. My first 'Proper' amp was a Mk III back in '69/'70. I didn't even have a cab to start with, just a Fane 60W 15" propped up in it's cardboard box ...

Seems like they would compliment each other combined, like the msrshall lacks something the selmer has and vice versa.

To my ears -> The JMP definitely has more midrange in the sound. The Selmer does offer a nice crunchy treble though.

Selmer sounds like a cranked silverface with the bass rolled off- its got that squishy compression in the midrange. Does it have a tube rectifier, Johan? Marshall wins here for me, but the Selmer would probably sound good doubletracked with it.
@JohanSegeborn

Thanks Jeff! I think the rectifier is solid state on that one

I see a GZ34 tube in the schematic, but that could be for a different version. The schematic says treble and bass 50 mkII. It has a tube rectifier

The Gibson/Marshall combination is so familiar that there's always a danger that anything else begins with a handicap simply by sounding different. But the Selmer has its own sound, and I wonder whether it isn't actually better at bringing out the character of the Flying V. The Marshall's thicker bass and low mids tends to make any Gibson with humbuckers sound like a Les Paul. The Selmer with a different cab might also be a more sympathetic pairing.

@@JohanSegeborn I been keeping my eye open for pulsonic coned celestions. There're so many numbers and dates to reference. I appreciate your videos as sound reference. Ideally, I'd like to replicate the VanHalen speaker combo you did, it is undoubtedly the best example of attaining brown sound, and once again, the ultimate decider is speakers.

@@dietmarsimon you can't do it on the jmp, but you can on the selmer, so there's no reason not to use its strong weapon in a vs. Normal channel sounds quite thin on its own, i think noone plays on it alone. But bridge them, & you get a massive tone.
