On Friday the 13th, a semi truck tempted its fate at the canopener bridge and got briefly stuck. The driver dropped the air suspension, thereby lowering the cab just enough to escape the grip of the hungry beast. Even though damage was minimal, enough unintentional contact was made for this to count as #160 since 2008.

I'm sorry, but this being an actual truck driver makes this inexcusable. That driver SHOULD know the height of his truck as it's something pounded into your skull during training for the job. I was taught, "if you're close or not sure, don't risk it!" I can understand the rental trucks and box trucks because usually you don't need a CDL to drive them, but a CDL holder should know better.
@sped6954
@sped6954 4 месяца назад
@@watchyourtimeco1It's sad but true, but this really is one of the smartest ones. But, he actually slowed down to a crawl so he could back out if need be, which is all the more telling because he actually KNEW that he wasn't going to make it. Truck drivers, of all people, KNOW full well that those signs aren't put there to be general guidelines or suggestions. They know that every single sign is to be taken very literally and followed to the letter.

@@sped6954 Oh yeah this guy had to know! I mean, it caught on his fairing and his trailer was a good foot taller! @@bobayotte2940 Yes, too easy. In Europe you can rent/drive maximum of 3,500kg on a regular driver's license (in the UK, up to 7,500kg if you passed your test before 1998 IIRC, not sure about mainland Europe). Similarly, a vehicle with maximum of 9 seats (okay, 16 seats if it's for voluntary/social purposes). All good rules in my opinion. In the US, most states allow driving a vehicle up to 26,000lbs (11,800kg), or any recreational vehicle (remember, some RVs are 3-axle buses without the seats!)... in my view, such allowances are insane, especially considering the driving test is so easy in many US states that a 10-year-old would not struggle to pass...
@pulaski1
@pulaski1 3 года назад
@@rama3njoy In the US it is surprisingly easy to rent a surprisingly large truck - I have rented a truck in the US with nothing more than a car licence, that had a 25ft/7m box, which in the UK would be a Class 3 Heavy Goods Vehicle, capable of carrying 14 metric/ GKN Chep pallets/ 14,000Kg. That is typical of many of the Penske trucks that have hit the bridge in these videos.

As a retired drver of 22 yrs. as of last year Semi truck van are usually 13'6". Now being said, I have actually went under less height. Dropping the airbags can lower you about 6-8" maybe a little more (I'm only guessing because I never measured it) but a foot, NO. As you see he hung up the truck, the truck is lower than the van trailer, meaning when dropping the airbags it was able to come free. It's not gonna drop a foot. Maybe something like a 13' bridge. The reason "I've" done that in case you're wondering why we truckers take that chance is because times I've done that the place I was looking for would be in that area and by the time i realized it would be past this low bridge there wouldn't be nowhere else to go but forward or back up ever how far it may be to another road. But like I said if it was that low then I was pretty much backing up. As you see here he had another choice and enough warnings. He could be an inexperienced rookie because an experienced trucker would not have tried it.

To be fair in many if not most cases there is a margin of error/leeway calculated and presented. For instance the sign turns on if a truck has 12 foot 2 inches of clearing, not 12 foot 4 inches like the bridge is. That is the main reason this channel has so many crashes. People assume they are in this margin without knowing. The semi driver merely tested if he is in that margin. Now he knows he is not. Without damage.
