How do you determine the correct ride height? And how does the ride height cause a grinding noise anyways?

I have an 07 international 4300 7 speed manual Eaton and it's doing the same thing. On reverse if it's a little uphill driveway I have to give a little more gas cause if not it's like it won't go anywhere. Any suggestions? I'm thinking bad transmission?
