Seminole Gulf Railway - DeSoto Turn Train Chase!

The Seminole Gulf Railway (SGLR) is a decent shortline in Southwest Florida. Operating on ex-ACL track to Fort Myers, and a mix of ex-ACL/SAL track in Sarasota, each side features a road local which works several customers. The railroad also operates the Murder Mystery Dinner Train, which I've caught after attending a Train Show once. We follow the DeSoto Turn from Fort Myers to Punta Gorda, seeing it switch the Amerigas and Best Aggregate industries. The railroad exudes "Voodoo and Palmettos" quite well with scenery very similar to southeast Florida, but with less development giving a true Old Florida feel. This iteration of the DeSoto Turn is powered by two B39-8Es. Been a minute since I've seen 4 axle GE switching!

The Bradenton, FL ex ACL depot has not been torn down. It still exists and is an opticians office known as the "Eye Depot".

@@TolgaEastCoast Sadly, the Sarasota depot was demolished many years ago and the Seminole Gulf RR just pulled up the tracks (in 2020) at that location all the way south to Palmer Ranch.

I now live Punta Gorda, I hardly ever see a train crossing at Jones Loop Rd. Now i recently found out the city I’m from owns Norfolk Southern Rails from Cincinnati Queensgate Railroad Yard all the to Chattanooga, TN

I love seeing those DASH 8's in action! There are the most powerful 4-axle units still to this day.

The GP60 was the last EMD 4 axle they made in 1986. It had 3800 hp while THE GE DASH 8 series had 4000 hp.

Thanks John! Yeah they're a fairly elusive outfit. Took me 10 years of buffing to pin down the dinner train and 12 for this.

Theres a familiar site. A little SG trivia, you can see their trains in the movie "Gone Fishing" with Joe Peshi and Danny Glover. The scene where the boat anchor is snatched by the train. Filmed in Estero.

The last customer south I know is Marjam along side of Alico Rd in South Ft Myers , the switch off the main towards Naples is lined reverse to Marjam there . The rails look rusty and unused south of there unfortunately.
