Time to help out the community by reviewing the recent UX resume submission and review request from a senior UX designer. They have applied to over 70 applications without being invited to a single interview. In this review we will walk through the key bits that can prevent seniors (and other seniority ux researchers and designers) from communicating the true value they can bring to the employers. Better yet, I'll also share specific template that can help overcome this.

Hi, I have question about font sizes - how small can you go? I have a few examples at the moment I'm using as guides and to get the body copy at the same size, I'm going down to 8 or less - is this cause no ones going to print it so it can be expanded or is this more that it needs to look good and people don't care if it's actually read? I actually can't find a design resume with 10 or higher font, which seems weird.

Hey I have a question: I used Figma to build my resume, similar to the format you suggested, but I’m so worried that it’s not ATS friendly… is my concern valid? I’ve gotten interviews but never from Workday/ Oracle or any big systems

@@vaexperience I have seen all of your videos... Is it okay to show official projects in an interview call?
@psh.pamela
@psh.pamela 8 месяцев назад
When I have been asked to show NDA work, I reiterate that I can only show the work during the interview. Showing the work during the interview should be fine but sending over any work before an interview is a big fat no. If you want to show NDA work in your portfolio, I have taken one of his videos to heart when designing my own. It's this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-69O-jSiF-5A.htmlsi=A1KEAeDW7OHoJAYV

What to do when all the work Was only "fast food" type of work and you did had any good result?
@vaexperience
@vaexperience 10 месяцев назад
Restart and do the 'proper food' type of work. Any gig you take should directly contribute to the future / be long term focused. So the best thing you can do is drop fast food stuff and start finding/doing work that will unlock better positions in the future.

You can always spin the work that you've done too. Ex. "Accelerated expedition of quality to advance xx% of production."

Hey there. Recently i've seen more and more recommendations regarding one column resumes and how they're supposedly ATS-Friendly. In your recommendation, you picture a two column resume. Have you heard anything about this and could you clarify if it does indeed make a difference? Thank you.
@vaexperience
@vaexperience 10 месяцев назад
UX roles are rarely selected out of the masses by the ATS alone. Because design requires more than just a resume assessment ( portfolio too) the recruiters still handpick and often need to screen call candidates before passing them to a hiring manager. I wouldnt otherthink it but if you're in doubt just use single column. Most of advice applies anyways

if i convert the 2 column to 1 column it turns into a 2 pager. Is that okay?@@vaexperience

It’s crazy. Can tell you right now that the US has hit below market demand for UXers. Most are not hiring due to recent economic and political issues that are out of our control. The UX market in US is a sinking ship.

This is completely true. Last year I was applying and interviewing for Junior UX Designer / UX Designer positions, I always got to the 4th/5th round but someone always beat me out. Then the tech layoffs happened and now there are UX designers all over the country out of a job. The freelance work has dried up as well and most of the time people are going to fivrr to have someone design screens for $5 from India. BuiltInNYC used to have 13-25 pages of UX designer positions for entry/mid - now as of Oct 2023 - there is ONE page. I wish I never paid $7000 for a bootcamp and went in another direction. Total waste of time and money.

@@keithb0000 if that is your attitude then yes, definitely. UX is a field for people who are truly passionate about it, not those looking for an easy job. the market has always been too saturated to accommodate UXers who are just doing it for good job prospects. it's always been extremely competitive although yes it's especially crazy right now
