I've been working with the G2/G3 for about a decade and have had to use up to 20 simultaneously once for a doc shoot With the G3/G4 you need to do a very specific procedure to get the best results, here is what I recommend: Turn off all transmitters/receivers so nothing is broadcasting Turn on only one receiver Set the squelch to 'Low' Perform a easy setup > scan new list This will scan all possible frequencies, but by having the squelch set to 'Low' it will be more prone to interference and therefore show less possible frequencies, which is a good thing, you dont want to select a frequency that is more prone to interference After the scan I typically navigate a few frequencies away from the first suggested and press 'Set' Then watch the reception of the receiver closely and look for the connection to change, if the connection does change this means something is in range that is causing interference on that frequency and you need ro select a different frequency from the scan list..select a different frequency from the scan list until you dont see interference Then set the squelch to 'High' This will increase the threshold at which point the reciever will connect to frequencies, making it less prone to connect to rogue interference signals Turn on the transmitter pack for the pair and sync the two using the sync function Set those two packs aside as they are now paired, do not turn them off as you want them to actively use the frequency Now turn on the next receiver and repeat the process for every lav pair needed It is best to do this one pair at a time so they dont inadvertently hog frequencies When running the sound mixer if possible I will set up the receiver packs so I can view the screen at a glance, this better allows you to troubleshoot issues..so if I hear static I can glace over at the signal, if I see the signal strength dip at all this tells me the pack is getting interference on that frequency and I'll change to a new frequency Static more often is caused by a bad frequency and not appropriate squelch

I stopped the video when someone said that a 2.4Ghz system is FAR more reliable. No, it is not. And if you hadn't had any problem it just means that you haven't used it enough or your expectations are just too low.

Interesting note, fpv drone pilots have switched entirely from 900mhz to 2.4ghz transmission systems for their control links. Link reliability in fpv is more important than in audio considering best case you lose your aircraft. Longer waves do of course travel further though.

@@FStoppers Come on Lee, you would complain that a mirrorless camera takes a better picture because your high end cinema camera was never blackshadded. The DJI uses a totally different band for transmission that can not be used for a pro audio setup. It has its own issues with the frequency it uses, probably would have issues going through walls. It has digital transmission, that means that there is sound or no sound, in digital transmission technology you cant hear static or "bad" reception. It's same like listening to DAB or internet radio. From RF standpoint I would guess that wall has iron rods inside. Also I would try not to have both antennas in parallel, but maybe the left tilted to left to capture changing orientation of transmitter antenna and signals that come from strange bounced crones. I'm no sound guy, but knowing HAM basic helps a lot in understanding and fixing RF problems

Analog audio works differently than digital. The older Sennheiser was analog, the newer model is digital. With digital the signal is either there, or it isn't - which is why the signal just cuts out. That's just the nature of digital. As others have said, best practice is to scan and find clean channels - even 100m move can make all the difference. You can absolutely still clip directly at the lav mic itself before it even hits the transmitter with 32-bit float. Mics are limited by their SPL and can clip, generally most good lav mics have plenty of dynamic range where this wouldn't be an issue but it is still a possibility with louder dynamics.

Thank you for sharing your real world experience. I know it’s easy to get caught in the tech specs but nothing beats experience. This answered a big question for me about the Sennheiser and confirms that having a backup recording on the transmitter like the DJI is superior bc no mater what wireless system you use, it seems like they fail at some point. I’m hoping DJI comes out with version 2 soon, similar to what Rode just released with 32-bit and locking cable.

@nathanksimpson
@nathanksimpson 11 месяцев назад
@@FStoppers that hiss in the short clip sounds like it could be a mixture of clothing rustle and/or interference. The original Sennheisers may not pass the "key test" when it comes to transient response and if it gets those high transients (like from clothing rustle) it's going to sound like digital noise as the audio gets companded. Clothing rustle, especially for synthetic fabrics can be really noisy. Regardless clothing rustle right next to the mic is going to sound really bad.

The patent on internal recording is owned by Zaxcom, so its not really clear if Rode, DJI, Deity etc licensed it or implemented a version that doesn't violate the patent. But it does appear Sennheiser will have transmitter recording in the plug on module at least. Though really they should have just made this receiver a two channel to save space...

Thank you so much for your video. I shoot horse training and my wife is often behind the horse or 40m (120feet) and I have the older versions of wireless Sennheiser. I experienced exact the same as you. There seems to be no rule why it's failing. Sometimes it worked just fine for a couple of days and then, without changing anything it would fail. It failed far away and it failed on short distance. I purchased then the Rode wireless Go II and that worked fine for two years even with a distance of 70m (210 feet). Then we moved and now it fails even by 20m or 60 feet as soon the transmitter is behind my wife. When she is behind the horse it fails even at close range. But at least I have a clean recording.

I can’t tell from your video how many boats are on the water nearby your shooting location, but particularly if you have commercial fishing, shipping and/or Coast Guard nearby…then you’re going to have channel overlap issues from high power transmitters adjacent to where you’re filming. You absolutely need to rescan when shifting locations under those circumstances. But that’s only a guess. ****However there’s something even more important I need to mention.**** In some modern recorders you may not have to worry about clipping inside the recorder. But you can still overdrive the capsule in your lav. Please stop telling people they don’t have to worry about clipping. It’s not true unless you have very expensive lavs that can handle high sound pressure levels. And I hear a lot of buzzing in your audio which is the result of bad gain staging relative to your mic capsule. Your audio technique is poor. Good audio has never been plug and play, and though it’s somewhat easier now, audio still requires more time and attention than most content creators care to take. Please bone up on your technique and stop blaming vendors for operator error.

Terrible review. I am sorry, but major user error with this. First and foremost, The DJI and Sennheiser use totally different bands for transmission. That is why they work differently. I have not done the research, but the DJI would have major connection issues in certain types of environments with the frequency they are using. Second, the bands Sennheiser uses are shared and every time you move, the offending shared bands envelope also changes. That is why you must rescan every time you move even if it is only 100 feet. It is the equivalent of using a cinema camera and not blackshading it and then complaining the your mirrorless camera has no issue but your high end cinema camera is unable to take a decent picture.

First issue before the start of recording, the transmitters were sending signals in different receivers. Second issue, both transmitters started sending signals in right and different receivers (1 tx of set 1 was sending to rx set 1 and the other tx of set 1 sending to a different rx), third issue during the start of event was signals were getting constantly cut. Fourth issue was I turned on 32 bit float recording on all tx but the signals were also getting cut. It was a nightmare. All in the 2.4 g wifi bullcrap

When close to a body of water, RF will be absorbed, rescan to a different channel and hope that the absorption is less. Older analog wireless sounds "fuzzy" when RF interference or loss occurs, with digital systems, it's a "cliff" of a dropout. Nevertheless, if you're a serious professional, don't skimp on the wireless, invest in a Lectrosonics wireless rig. Solid, bulletproof, mine have yet to let me down.
