Sennheiser Momentum 4 Real Review: charge & use at the same time!

It's been a while since I saw a product that has got everything right and makes my jaw drop! Introducing the brand new Sennheiser Momentum 4 active noise canceling headphones. There are so many great things about the new Momentum 4 headphones and just a couple of not so great things.
The biggest negative comment about these is that the earcup hole is quite narrow and small for people who have large ears. But the majority of people who are looking for a comfortable pair of active noise canceling headphones won't be disappointed with these. Even thought the earcups don't have a full tilt-adjustment to reduce the amount of pressure on the jawbone for those of us who are very sensitive, they are still so comfortable that even I can wear them all day long.
Sennheiser could've paid more attention to these two things, but again there are so many great things about them such as a great ANC, stellar sound, reasonably good design, great mic quality, etc. that will make up for those couple of things. Also during a walk outside, with the transparency mode on, in the wind they kept increasing and decreasing the ANC. It was like the ANC was getting activated for one second and then the transparency mode was activated another second. This was kind of annoying to here, but as I'm writing this, there is a firmware update that improves the adaptive ANC. Have they made a fix for that problem already?
So here's an inconclusive list of pros and cons of the new Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones:

i tried installing the firmware update that just came out but ever since then, the headphones don't even turn on anymore. they are at 90% battery and my phone is able to connect to other bluetooth devices. any advice?

2:36 I bought these on Black Friday and I’m really loving the Momentum 4’s because the quality and sound is perfect for me. The only problem I have is what you said, the ear cups make you sweat after sometime. Another thing I noticed was also the battery life is really good but I did have that same drop from 90 to 80 the next morning. 8.5/10 headphones. I recommend these for Christmas.

Thanks for the video~ I basically watched all reviews before buying them.. you are the only one who covers one or two points from actual use that others weren't mentioning... I got the headphones from a local store at a cheaper price (though only black is available). Sound is good no complain..But the software is crappy... I updated to the latest firmware but some features are then unavailable (smart pause etc.) I then reset to factory setting and they are Ok again. since then I haven't done the update. One thing that causes me inconvenience is that the bluetooth connection or power... with my laptop it will sometimes go off itself...and I need to activate it again. Then, in my mobile app, it turns off the connection whenever I open the app 🥲 I need to reset every time for connection .. a bit annoying...i believe this is related to the software.... I don't mine turning things on and off manually.. but I still hope I don't spend the $$ ONLY on the sound quality..

I know it’s only been 10 days since you guys posted these comments, however, I was wondering if there’s any improvement?? I was planning to buy these on the weekend but I’ve read a lot of people complaining about the software bugs and the amount of inconvenience it has caused. @@sh10an You tried them on yet?? 1. I personally don't see further update of firmware in these 10 days 2. It still doesn't work well with my laptop. It will be off connection automatically sometimes(not acceptable for Bluetooth device). But yesterday I saw your msg so I tested on my mobile. Turned off auto off function and played for a continuous 4 hrs. No issue....! 3. When two close devices connected at the same time I heard some "ki li ka la" sound even though one is not playing anything. I'm going to call the CS to check if my Bluetooth has sth wrong ... If I were you ,I would have waited and tried out others first... unless you have no concern of $$ and only use at home (which I do )

Is it better than the technics a800 in sound ( music and games ) ? And what is the better surround sound, even if it's a little bit, because even if it's a little surround sound, I think it's good for story games and rpg games, I don't care about the exact surround sound of fps games

Hello, I just saw your review by chance and it is a nice review! I received mine yesterday and have one question. When I plug the headphone with usb c, I found out that whenever I use listening and mic simultaneously, the sound quality degrades. Do you also have the same issue? I wonder how can I fix this problem, since I also want to use this headphone as gaming.

Hi! Thank you for watching. So I did test this and just be sure that your headphones are connected to your PC before plugging them in. Then when you plug in via USB-C in the sound output you should see two Momentum 4 outputs. One of them is via Bluetooth and the other via USB-C. If you select the second one, which is probably named Headphones (2- Momentum 4), then the sound quality is not as good, so that's why you should select the first one which is a Bluetooth connection. Otherwise I haven't noticed any issues when plugged in in terms of sound quality. Hope this helps!

Hay Ryan and thanks for the detailed review. You mentioned that you can plug the hardest via USB type-c to your computer. Can you use them for zoom or teams with the microphone ?

Hey Dan! When you plug them in via a USB-C cable, the headphones stay on, which means the Bluetooth connection to that device, PC or otherwise, stays in place. This means you should be able to use the mic. I haven't tested those, but I've used other apps while plugged in to the PC and it worked!

Wish the would've stuck to the design language of thier first three momentums, but the battery life on these are really appealing. The M3 was a big step back in terms battery life had to recharge them every other day.

Thanks for the review! I just wanted to ask you a question. I bought Momentum 4 and used it for 2 days. I noticed that when I turn my head around, I can hear a plastic click inside the earcups, both left and right. I come from Momentum 3 that was in steel, no plastic at all. Do you feel the same? Try it with no sound, just wear it and turn your head around. I don’t know if it’s my product that is defected, but if it’s a common issue, I think I’ll return it to Sennheiser. Please let me know, thanks!

Yeah I would love to hear your opinion! I'm thinking to switch my Bose QC35ii to Momentum 4; are they as comfortable? the only thing that might be a deal breaker is the fact that they are not foldable - which Ryan was the first reviewer I heard to mention it, btw. I carry my QC everywhere, I wonder how much of a difference it is in terms of their size. And thanks Ryan for the really great review!! helped me a lot.

@@taltoltal I have my momentum 4 with me now about a month old, and tbh, right off the box it sounded amazing to me compared to both QC35 and 45 which i owned in the past. The bass is real, and the clarity is crisp. All genres fit right in. My favourite EQ preset is the Hip Hop one, without adding any more bass boost. Connection is solid. I love too the USB audio capability. Ya it don't fold small but carrying is manageable forme in my laptop bag. On my head, comfort is at par with the Bose QC series In this one month I have only had to top up the charge twice (just because I love my battery to be 70% and above at all times. What I don't like is: Once inside it's case, if you turn the case upside down it powers on. I hate that because in the laptop bad, sometimes I can lay the bag upside down

No but that's actually a great question Ethan! And you're right, it seems like there isn't an obvious way to do it, but if you turn off the adaptive mode, then put the slider right in the middle it's kind of like that, but probably not exactly! have the 3 series & happy with those apart from the headband that leaves ridged dents on my shaven head. I need a good reason to update to the 4 series & to be honest the styling looks like a £30 pair from the local supermarket. Soundwise why is it necessary to upgrade to the 4 is what I need to know, apart from the dents on my bald 👨‍🦲 head.

That kind of thinking actually makes sense Dave! Apart from the top of the headband with that fabric, the rest don't look very premium. But it sounds like currently comfort is what you're looking for. Hey Ryan, thanks for your video!! I am also thinking about buying this one too. But I have always been using Marshall products in the past, especially love its heavy bass sound. However, the features on this M4 are so appealing! I was wondering if you ever tried Marshall vs. Sennheiser, how do they compare in terms of bass sound. I tried my friends Sennheiser 450BT the other day, i honest don't like the sound/audio quality, especially the bass. It could just because that was a cheaper version. But again, even for a 100 buck Marshall earphone, the bass quality is still great (bass sound quite consistence across all of their products) - Do you know this is the same case for Sennheiser products: all base signature would be the same/similar across their product? If so, i would be hesitate to purchase M4 given how 450BT's bass. Let me know if you could share any insights on above questions?

These sound more neutral, but really well-tuned. The lower bass is a compromise to get that kind of balanced sound. If you listen to a lot of HipHop and EDM, the other two options from that video are better. But still the bass is not really that bad and the best way is to try them out for yourself. So, to use the headphones using the USB cable, would ONLY be through the USB-A cable that is also used for charging?... That's not going to be useful because today, many headphones give you the option to use an audio cable via 3.2 headphone jack or USB-C to USB-C cable (mostly for lossless/Hi-Res audio)... How am I supposed to use the headphones via audio cable when, for example, I use a smartphone with USB-C conector?... Should I need to buy a 3.2 jack to USB-C adapter in that manner?

I just got these headphones and man they are just not loud enough. When using this with BT on my S22 Ultra I have to crank the volume up to 1 or two clicks shy of max. If I plug them in with a cable then I only need volume halfway. Also, when on a call with Bluetooth half volume is perfect. For some reason when listening to music the volume is just too low. Anyone else notice this?

Hi , I have the Sony XM3 as well as XM4. I have a Sennheiser True Wireless Momentum 3 and love the sound quality of Sennheiser. Very natural and not artificial. I'm really leaning towards moving to Sennheiser fully. But but I am very concerned about the ANC performance. One of my big use cases is air travel and definitely need a good ANC. Can you please give an update on how it is now (November 26th, 2022). Can someone please help me out here. I plan to buy it in a few hours and make use of that discounted price..please help

Hey @Electro ! Not sure if you've already bought them or not. I actually think since you've already had Sennheiser headphones before and you like the sound, buying the M4 is probably a good idea. The ANC is pretty good, but just not as good as the Sony's. The Technics that @H mentioned actually take less space in the case because they're foldable despite being bigger. But unfortunately there is no perfect pair of headphones that I know that has everything right. At the moment I don't have the M4 unit with me to tell you whether there is any firmware issues or not, perhaps others can comment, but I always ask folks to let others know which one they ended up buying so feel free to do that here!

@@RyansTechMedia thank you for getting back to me. No I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have a Sony XM3 and XM4 and I have a Sennheiser True Wireless Momentum 3 Earbuds. Sony headphones are awesome but I find them , from a look perspective, protruding too much on my small head and also the sound is good but not like the sound staging like Sennheiser. ANC is awesome but I do think there is cabin pressure issues with both XM3 and XM4. So I am also considering Bose QC45. I heard that with several firmware updates the Bose QC45 has gotten really good. Now I am a bit confused with all the options. I like the button controls over swipe controls. Given all that Bose QC45 seems to be the only option but I am also a bit confused about Sennheiser Momentum 4 with this sale going on. I will certainly post you all here. If I ask you what you think about Bose QC45 vs Sennheiser Momentum 4 then what will be your take?

@Electro No problem! In that case, I wouldn't recommend the Technics A800 at all as they're quite bulky. If I preferred physical buttons and great ANC, then I would choose the QC45. But if I wanted more clarity in music and better battery life and a bit more modern controls, then I would go for the Momentum 4. At the end of the day, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but probably my number one concern would be if the fit is good and comfortable. Everything else comes after this, which means I won't exactly know until I've tried them on myself.

How are them for gaming?

Not my first choice. I'd rather get a proper gaming headset, but since you can plug them via USB to charge and still use them via Bluetooth, not a very bad choice!

@@RyansTechMedia Does it have surround sound even if it is a little ? , because if the answer is yes I think it is good for story and rpg games ، I don't care about the exact surround sound of fps games

Well tuned? I returned this headphones because the sub bass sounds awful.. way too loud and gives a headache when listening to certain genres.. such a poorly balanced sound

A shame that sennheiser (and sony) follows the trend of minimizing the material costs but maximizing the price. These headphones look like a cheap plastic bomber and absolutely NOT premium! I still use the sony xm2 because they work flawlessly and still have top battery life. Also, they look and feel premium with great sound quality. No need to waste 350 Euros!

I have to agree with you on this. I genuinely like the top of the headband and that's perhaps the only premium-looking part, the rest as I've also listed in the cons in the description of the video is just too plastic-y. Maybe I should've talked more about this in the video!
