if my grandma did this, she would keep EVERYTHING (which she did) Including her mother, when they had to move her stuff, my grandma picked up a box full of papers which literally disintegrated in front of her and my mother, stuff was sitting on the floor for so long it was discolored with a permanent mark

As a hoarder myself, I could honestly say that a situation like this would (and has) send me into a full blown panic attack. Years of therapy and we are just getting to the origins of it all, and how to prevent it. A few years ago I was able to get rid of 3 full trash bags of stuffed animals that made it impossible for me to sleep on my own bed. I do still have mini freak outs on not finding things and have had times where my mother gave me this kind of ultimatum. But through it all, I have gotten rid of 4 doom bins, and am slowly working through my room. Trust me y’all, it gets better! And don’t ever try to do it on your own, ask for help as much as you can, even over the little stuff. Don’t ever feel embarrassed for asking for help. I understand being sentimental, but it can reach a point where you have run out of room to make new memories. One of the best coping skills (for me personally) is taking pictures of the items, and keeping the images in a safe place. It helps you see the item and remember the memories attached to it without cluttering up your space. I hope y’all find your own way out of this, and have a great rest of your day!

Keep your sentimental treasures, I’m going to start scrapbooking the things that are important to me and place some objects in some light/shadow boxes. Because of homelessness in my youth I’ve lost so many things with sentimental value , organizing is important but memories are great too. Also take the time to write down or type out the important moments in your life, even if it seems mundane. These things will help your family and descendants remember you for a long time. I wish I had knew more about my grandmother before she passed but alas

This was me until a friend I have a lot of respect for told me to stop hoarding trash. She came and helped me clean. And it really was a case of keeping trash. Like candy wrappers I felt were significant, pieces of junk I found on the ground and "felt bad for". Strings and bottle caps and toilet paper rolls I thought were going to be super useful one day and thought I'd regret throwing it away. And she didn't call me bad for keeping this nonsense, she just said that she likes that I'm sentimental but that I deserve better. I'm still a packrat but now I collect books, candles, and antique ornaments. And they are lovely to look at and bring me much joy.

for everyone struggeling with hoarding. here are some tips: • sort your belongings into sections (1. Things I use on a day to day basis 2. things I haven't worn or used for half a year 3. things that are very sentimental to me but I don't use regularly 4. ... etc.) • struggling to let go of something but you don't use it? Put it in a bag and store it put a date on it and open it in half a year again. Did you miss the items you put in there? Did you open the bag in this half year? If not you can give it away. • take a photo of items you have an emotional connection to. that way the feeling won't be lost but you can give away the item because you still have a picture of it. • say thank you to the items you're throwing out. they've been with you through your best and worst and that way you let them go emotionally. • don't just throw everything in the bin. You can donate it or sell it if it's important to you. You can put out a box of stuff that's still good but nobody would buy infront of your house with a note "I'm looking for a new home" and it will be gone in a few days • ask for help! You don't have to do this alone. even an understanding friend might help. but of course reaching out to professionals like therapists and professional cleaners is also a good idea. • don't stress yourself about needing to get rid of everything. If you cherish an old rusty can like the boy in the video then do so proudly. Clean it, put it on a shelf where you can see it and tell the story proudly. You can do this!

From my mom, an interior decorator who deals with casual hoarders a lot: take a box (or boxes) of all your crap, put them in the garage, and leave them there. If you need something from the box, go take it out, but ONLY that thing. If you can go one month, three months, six months without thinoung about whats in the boxes, you dont need it, get rid of it. Of coyrse, sentimental things are fine to keep, but dont overdo it.

My mother was like this: always wanting to pare down and clean up *everyone else's* mess. Meanwhile, her bedroom slowly became buried in piles of shoes (and their boxes), clothes, etc that eventually spilled out to where she'd make me clean out closet space *so she could hang her extra clothes in my closet* and store papers and boxes in my bedroom. She filled the finished basement with junk and possessions she never even unboxed, and then criticized the appearance of the small space I carved out among the boxes to put a chair and TV in so I could have some alone time. Her living room had tiny paths carved out of the old newspapers and magazines she scattered all over everything, so she could get to the one chair she could still sit in, the kitchen, her bedroom, and the front door. All the rest of the floor was unsafe to walk on. We had a two car garage, but I parked in the street because half of it was filled with junk (and she complained about me parking in the street "like a slob" but wouldn't let me park in the driveway). The people most concerned with running everyone else's life and business are often the ones who have let their own lives and business spiral out of their control, but are too afraid to face it.
