Sentry Safe Biometric Model QAP1 or QAP2 Gas Strut Fix - Don't get frustrated when your Sentry pistol safe when it fails to open and/or the gas strut fails...fix it by replacing the gas strut spring with a longer, stronger spring! Don't bother calling Sentry to be on hold for an hour and then they tell you that the gas strut is not in stock or if it is, it costs $20+ dollars not including shipping! Simply get a longer, sturdier spring from your local hardware store (HD, Lowes, Ace, etc.) and remove the gas strut, unscrew the yoke end of the strut, slip on the longer, sturdier spring, replace the yoke and then replace the the gas strut and it's fixed! Just make sure that the spring isn't so long that the lid won't fully close. Please subscribe and thumbs up!

I just grabbed both ends of the spring and stretched it out about a half inch. Works fine now. Probably won't last but we shall see.

John, your "fix" worked perfectly! I bought a $1.25 spring from Ace Hardware and it's fixed! Thanks!

I have 3 of these in 2 sizes and all 3 have that issue, you just saved me trying to figure out a decent replacement strut that would most likely have made no difference, Thank you a ton. I will be doing this shortly.

So glad that I saw this. Now I can fix this safe. How did they think that it was ok to sell these knowing this would happen?

Somebody at SentrySafe said "You know... we could save $0.12 if we used this cheap garbage strut instead of a reliable one. And we'll collect our money well before the customers realize how crappy it is."

My pleasure! Mine just happened too so I luckily thought of this after researching and finding nothing but Chinese crap that doesn't fit properly or order from the safe company at a ridiculous cost. I had a spring that fit perfectly, but you can also use two shorter ones. Just don't make them so long that the lid wont close. Good luck!

Thanks for the video! I went down the rabbit hole of looking for a new strut. This is simple and I think my strut is still good.

I just bought 2 struts for $13.49 on amazon. They fit perfectly, and took about 10 minutes to change. Unscrew both mounting points from the original strut, and reuse.

Thanks! Yes, the cheap Chinese gas strut fails after a few years and they are hard to find and expensive. The spring trick works!

THANKS for opening my eyes! I was searching for a replacement cylinder, and your video popped up. Grabbed my drawer full of salvage springs and one fit perfectly... DONE! Spring size?... just open and measure it... Pull the old spring out and drive to Lowes or Home Depot... By the way, you will need a 13mm open-end to hold the interior nut and remove the top nut.

Your video has been very inspiring to me. I spent five dollars at a hardware store and purchased a pack of springs. After replacing the spring, the issue was effectively resolved. However, after over a month, I encountered a new problem where the lid of the safe no longer lifts up easily. I have to use my fingernail to pry it open. This led me to suspect that the gas strut might be the issue. While I was looking for a suitable replacement strut, I came across this product (Apexstone 7.68" 80N gas strut), which appears to be promising. However, I still need your advice on whether it would be a good choice. Thank you.

I feel like the strut should at least provide enough force to open the door when it's part way open, which yours seems to do. Even if I replace the spring, the strut itself isn't really doing much. I was hoping for a way to adjust the strut itself. Thanks for the post.
@JohnSims3
@JohnSims3 Год назад
That's all I cared about was the door opening. I don't think the strut is adjustable at all...Mine wasn't totally gone either. It's too bad that a cheap strut isn't available!

Problem is it really didn’t open fully. Yes, it did pop up a little, but … It is a quick and easy fix, but I like things to work as designed. The struts are cheap on Amazon. Poor design by sentry, and should have been spring only, and not a strut. I assume they went the strut route to make it as silent as possible when opening. The issue I have is Sentry charging so much if you call them. Plus shipping. I called and would have cost me almost $40.

I just bought struts (2 for $13.49) on Amazon. Easy to install. If it only last 1 years, I have spare. For $7 each, it’s well worth it. But, thank you for doing the video. I have fixed so many things, from RU-vid

I guess that would work in a pinch and if you had a combination of those springs laying around your house but you can order these replacement struts off Amazon for fairly cheap. In most cases you’ll even get an extra one for whenever that one quits working also if it ever does. I just ordered a package of two of these for about 15 bucks that should be the same size as the one my safe has, I just hope it’s not too strong of a strut because I have no idea what the factory struts are supposed to be able to lift and the only numbers I can see on the side there’s one that says 50N which is about 12 pounds. The pair I got is 20 pounds so hopefully if it still has the soft open like it’s supposed to have, it won’t matter. Also, my factory strut measures from center to center of factory ends fully opened 7 1/2 inches at about 5 1/2 inches fully compressed.
@JohnSims3
@JohnSims3 Год назад
Thanks! What's the part number or Amazon link?
@billplaisance6387
@billplaisance6387 Год назад
@@JohnSims3 these are the ones I ordered but haven’t tried one yet. I’ll know Tuesday when they show up but there’s several different ones to choose with different lifting capacities. I can’t remember if it’s this one that I ordered but one of them has a 10-pound option. I wasn’t sure if that would be strong enough so I went with the 20-pound option. You just have to be careful because on some if you select a different weight, it’ll be for a shorter strut which probably wouldn’t be an issue for most people but I want my safe to open fully. If you get one that’s shorter, you can add washers between the thread-on heim joints on each end of the new strut. I’ll try to report back when I get it installed so hopefully the new strut will have the same slow-opening characteristics meaning you probably won’t have to worry so much if it’s stronger than the one Sentry used. @@JohnSims3 got that strut in yesterday and it works perfect. It’s just a little bit shorter than the original but it still opens the lid pretty much all the way up. It seems like it opens with a little more force but it still doesn’t slam it open nor is it more difficult to close being that the weight lifting capacity is probably doubled. I highly recommend it.
