Hi - just wanted to say a huge thankyou for your videos - Never in a million years would I have seen myself gardening, but during lockdown I planted a few seeds, then stumbled across your videos, ordered a greenhouse and waited four months for it to arrive. You are a natural teacher and so clearly love what you do, that as a beginner, I now have a veg patch and thriving greenhouse. What a joy....I have to confess a bit of a secret addiction now!
Hi Eli. You’ve become my go to YT garden videos, I’m a lockdown newbie, although my mother used to have an allotment where I was dragged every Sunday to water and weed (bless her) some of the repetitive procedures must have stuck. In the 1st lockdown we purchases a Vegepod on wheels, little bit expensive but the mobility on a small patio has been a real bonus. These have a double cover 1x double mesh and a waterproof pull over cover, this has enabled us to grow from seed and complete the growing process with for instance beetroot. I’ve never quite understood how cabbage whites get through the mesh until I read an article saying how clever they are…apparently if they cannot access an area like a meshed raised bed…they fly above and parachute their eggs from above, I possibly didn’t believe this until on the Vegepod mesh cover (similar to your raised beds) appeared little green caterpillars, I was fortunate that they were delayed in accessing the double mesh and had chance early morning to pick off the little offenders and dispose of, hope this helps other gardeners. Regards Paul
Morning ladies, do your strawberries and blackberries work their way through the fence to the neighbors 😮 are they ok with it. One of the main reasons I don’t grow blackberries is they are too much work 😂😂. I only net my brassica plants as like you said almost everything else needs the pollinators to get in 👍🐝🐝. I appreciate you don’t do what I sow as lots of people already do those types and yes we are worldwide. Thank you for sharing your videos 🇨🇦👍🐝 safe both of you
There shouldn't be an issue with the blackberries. They are in pots so they won't put runner canes out like they would if they were in the ground. The canes we tie in shouldn't be an issue because they are controlled..... but this is theory.... we'll just ha e to wait and see 😀
I've been looking forward to this video since you asked for permission to use my footage Eli, great video! Good weather week ahead of us now...Steve...😃
i think you’ve inspired me to get some winter veg in before it’s too late! i’m a 22 year old newbie gardener so i love your videos! just pulled up the last of my carrot harvest to make some soup to eat now and will be enough to freeze some for the autumn too! yum!
I have bought almost all my seeds from Premier Seeds Direct for next year. I need to get that seed organizer (I have it on my wishlist on Amazon). We've sown some chard and spinach in our garden with an insect netting cage. Our garden is surrounded by hedges and millions of wee birds that strip the leaves off before the plants are established. So with this being a slower growing time, we had to protect them. I love your videos - they're always very helpful. 😊
Thanks for another great video, as much as I respect some TV gardeners (St Monty Don) their perfect gardens can be a little much so seeing real people in real gardens is great. Had some sun here so been a garden tidy day, so many seeds to collect.
@@eliandkate Just watching how you made the net supports for your beds as every time I see them I forget to and I have no idea why but I always thought they were made of pool noodles / pipe insulation things. I have the net on wire hoops in mine and drives me mad.
After watching your garden tour, I have been looking into Thornless Blackberries / Brambles and I have ordered one. I'm so excited! I love that you can train them across your fence. Thanks for all the tips!
I am further north than you, near Arbroath, my runner beans just started to be harvest-able a week or so ago. Only 6 plants, in grow bags with long canes, 2 are almost reaching the balcony upstairs. I will freeze the excess beans
Thanks Eli, did same as you with peas and beans so I know better for next year. I learnt from you beans like to curl up poles, I did mine on netting still successful but going to make pole wigwam arch from on raise bed to another, which will save space and see what next years harvest brings. Would love a video on how you going to graduate and plant peas and beans to prevent a glut. I also made mistake of underestimating the amount of butterflies and yes I turned into a caterpillar terminator. Didnt use any netting...no excuse as it was in the shed ☹ another lesson learnt. Been making another new raised bed and strawberry planter table to match my herb table. So busy weekend for me. Thanks again, all the best from Lune Valley.👍
Loving your videos, thank you :) Waiting for the fitter to arrive to put my new greenhouse together ( first one ever so not attempting it myself) , got stuff all over the house for it, raised beds still packed in the conservatory, new tools in the bedroom and kitchen :D I am a nuisance at the moment so I'm told :) Cant wait to get started and I am going back looking at all your videos till I can get cracking.
Sounds great! I say this everytime, but I think right no is te most exciting time for you - that whole new growing space thing. Just remember to really think about how you are going to set things out before you rush in :D Not sure if these help Greenhouse ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iAZPHpt3oR8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TYA9L34pZOQ.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n--O47O9DZI.html Before you build raised beds ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V4BXAILsnTE.html Garden ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kRMUCN4TnLA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ob1X64ykbUk.html
Great video and info 👍I have greenhouse envy, alas I have no space for one in my garden. Thank you for your content really inspires me to get out into the garden 😊
@@eliandkate yea, for me it is overkill too. When you use sprays you have to keep up on it. Reapply after a rain, etc. the netting helps take that regular task off the list. I think you have the right idea to me!!
Didn't catch what beans you grew but if you can stand the look for a while longer you could let those overgrown beans grow until the pods are dry and you will have seeds for next year
Hey Teresa they are cobra green beans (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oNUXnrVKV8c.html) I have loads of beans for sowing for other years, downside of having a garden not an allotment and of only growing for the two of us :D. so there's no need for me to keep any :D
Interesting I bought two cultivated blackberry bushes online I v had them in a pot for almost 2 years and no blackberry s I v bought the one you v got growing on Kane’s and they have produced within 6 months so going to put the potted blackberry’s in to the raised beds and give them a feed not giving up on them as yet I ll do the wire going across the fencing as well was going to put a trellis up but that’s more economic doing it that way and saves some penny’s as well thank you
Great video thank you. It’s really useful to know the reasons for choosing which seeds you sow and why at this time of year. It’s just a shame that days to maturity aren’t printed on seed packets. I’ve found it quite difficult to find that information for different plants and varieties.
At the time I watched this video, there were thirty-seven positive comments … but not a single “Like”. Come on, people. If you don’t hit the like, Eli doesn’t know if you liked the contents. And if you have time to comment, you have time to like (or dislike, if you’re a dink). Eli: I spray Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT is what everyone calls it, unless they’re into dead languages). This stuff is OMRI listed and is a natural substance that kills caterpillars. I had quite a few of the buggers and BT killed them systemically over a period of a few days. A second spraying a week later, and no more caterpillars. On top of this, you can also plant a little Borage in the bed with your leafy stuff. The flowers are cute and attract bees, but also the plant confuses moths, and they’re less likely to lay their eggs in the vicinity. Nice video. I almost felt that I was there (sitting and watching you and Kate doing all the work, that was).
Glad you got to chill with me in the garden. I see loafs of folk online using BT, I use it for my housepla ts to sort fungus gnats 😀 think it would be totally overkill for my one row of leafy greens though lol
Hi Eli, great info as always. Just letting you know that my first season here in the Borders with the greenhouse has produced loads of great tomatoes. It took a while for them to start to ripen but the load has been huge. I'm so chuffed, tomatoes are my favourite things to eat. Growing in the Quadgrow has been great and the size of the fruit is amazing. Even the Gardeners Delight have been the size of standard tomatoes and the Shirley the size of beefsteaks. I'm not sure if this effects taste. What do you think?
I've heard other folk mention that their tomatoes are much bigger than mine (same variety) - can't explain it at all :D But they've said it didn't affect the flavour theirs - so fingers crossed
I really like your hinged bed covers. Do you preserve your green beans? I have been canning them & plan to pickle some this week. Hubby and I canned pickled coleslaw today for the first time. TFS
No I don't. I'm not a big one for eating pickles etc so I'm trying to focus more on just growing what I need rather than having an absurd abundance :D I'll get there eventually.
@@eliandkate We live in the country so the closest grocery store is at least 12 miles away. After this nasty pandemic and finding bare shelves I started canning again. So far 19 pints of green beans that I don't have to shop for. It takes time but I'm sure you will get there. Freezing is also another option. Have a great day.
I’ve got netting over various brassica plants in my community well-being garden, but sneaky slugs still chomping at things. Can you suggest anything to help please? X
Slugs are just one of those thjngs and the wetter the weather the more you get. You could try some nematodes, a few folk online were saying that really helped them.
