I gave in and got it two weeks ago. I've had many synths over the years. This one is a keeper. The variety of sounds you can get are limited and I would not have minded to see some small additions like a second lfo, a higher rate, key-sync, more stable tuning, negative envelopes, mod-wheel to filter cutoff and gradual keyboard tracking for the filter instead of the half and full mode. This is not a modulation monster and it can't do everything. However, it certainly is a sound monster: The only other synth which I have had so far that produced such a rich sound across the whole frequency range was the Subsequent37. A completely different beast of course, but there's something about the fullness of a sound which is hard to explain. This stretches into the effects sometimes: pair the Prophet with great effects and it goes from ear candy to pure bliss, but pair it with some random cheap effects and you start to hear the fullness falling apart, where the Prophet wants to be free of the effect which kind of just trails behind the might of the Prophet sound and muddles it. I guess you have to hear it for yourself. Granted, it's a lot of money, but it's super hard to put a price tag on that sound. If you want a gorgeous sounding synth and on top of that one of the best sounding ones on the market (at least to my ears, next to the UDO Super-6 and the Vermona '14), the price just loses its importance. Add to that the solid and pleasing overall feel and the big knobs which allow for small changes with ease. Perhaps one of the biggest strong points for me: the dual filters. I have been easily frustrated with filters in the past where I would need to either modulate it or leave it at specific settings to make it sound good to my ears. But with the Prophet lots of filter settings and sweeps at various resonances sound good. And when you go "I wish this was a bit brighter" or "fuller" you just switch from the more mellow Rev1 filter to the brighter and beefier Rev2/3 filter (again, at least to my ears). That immediately accessible kind of subtle but then again not so subtle change of character is super handy. Last but not least this is a piece of history right there. I am recreating YMO's Behind The Mask and I love being able to have "the real thing" for it. And I do see how musicians in the past got inspired by the Prophet. The beauty of the sound inspires one to play differently. It's not just riffs or something I've learned in the past, every sound provokes a different style of playing. Granted, other synths can cause that as well, but I never had it as strongly as with the Prophet. If you are not sure about buying it, I recommend checking out the Repro 5. It's a superb plugin and sounds brilliant.
