Christopher Winkels you’re actually better off investing in this synth as it will more than likely never be made again so it will appreciate relative to the dollar in the long run. Especially with real negative rates for the foreseeable future
@@fromdusktodawn509 Dave will DEFINITELY never do this again. He was opposed to the idea in the first place. I think it's like with Moog, they were pushed hard enough and finally accepted. I'm sure it's stressful doing reissues because it will get 100% scrutiny if not done 100% perfectly. It's a terrible gamble to do one, but if it works out, it really makes the brand get serious brownie points as a whole. (plus, he's 70 now, I doubt he'd be around for another release, and frankly I don't trust anyone else to do it. At 70 he still seriously knows his stuff.)
Ricky Tinez do you feel like this upstages the Prophet 6 a bit? Obviously the P6 is a beautiful keyboard but I mean....a prophet 5....can’t really say no to that if you are already going to spend $3k on the P6 Love your stuff Ricky!
I've just been saving for a Prophet 6 I wanted to buy the next days. Damn! Obviously this beast has the richer and nicer VCOs and Filter, but much more limited mod options and smaller tonal range. I guess it's worth it for everybody who can afford a whole synth park and I'll stick with the 6.
@@skylerhalemusic Hey, thx for the offer, but I'm working at a music store and got excellent employee discounts. I usually just pay the wholesale price + VAT.
@@benanderson89 If only they'd make a Juno-60 reissue already.. I can finally never look at that company ever again. It's so disappointing when someone OWNS something special, and does nothing with it.
We always say “why can’t these manufacturers make synths that sound as good as the old ones?” Well here ya go. Maybe through his trip down memory lane Dave figured out what that “it” thing is and will put it in the rest of his synths moving forward, because nothing analog since DSI started has sounded this good. He clearly can make “that” sound today. IMO nothing analog he makes from here on out should sound any lesser.
I totally agree. I'm really impressed with how good this one sounds. This to me is the first very good and classic sounding analog polysynth in a long time. It sounds just like any good example of a Prophet 5 I've heard. I also love that he added both the SSM and Curtis filter in it, so that you can emulate both Rev 2 and Rev 3 patches acurately.
@@MacXpert74 agreed this sounds incredible. Very tempting.... for others though check out the Moog Matriarch and Grandmother - imo the best sounding modern analog synths along with this.
Keep in mind that these patches might not be in the final version :) This is a beta version and this guy was tasked with building some of the patches which might or might not be final.
This was always the vintage analogue that I wanted to own but the spiralling second hand prices and potential repair bills always put me off. I had pretty much accepted that I would never own one but now I'm not so sure.
That brass at 3:07… so what I'm into out of an analog poly synth! In the beginning of '83 I was still a drummer who had piano lessons and loved synths. I got to borrow my buddy's Prophet 5 and Tascam 4-Track cassette "Porta-Studio" and made some multi-track'd Prophet 5 doodlings. I own a lot of synths today including a Prophet T8… this piece is really beginning to tempt me… especially the 10 voice version.
Yep after watching Dave’s video then this I’ve soiled myself and have my finger hovering above the pre-order button. I mean this man (Dave) just freakin did the biggest mic drop the world of synths has seen for a long long time! Boom!
Thank god Dave has the sense to make do his own Prophet 5 remake not Behringer. And won't we all reap the benefits- This uses the same components as the original - same VCOs & Filters from Curtis - Fantastic news. Come on Yamaha where's that CS80?
Yamaha should make a remake of theire good old G-1 synthesizer from 1973. It was the first real polyphonic synth ever. A 8 voices synth. Abba, Stevie Wonder, Keith Emerson, Led Zeppeline, Gino Vaneli and others used that. synthesizer
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games Behringer is still releasing a Pro 600 desktop and we can expect a demo soon, they released some pictures. Because the Prophet 5 rev 2 is probably overpriced as most synths are, I will buy the cheaper Behringer one, because I can't afford to pay 2000 on a synth and I don't care if it sounds on point or close to a Prophet. I think that if it wasn't of Behringer releasing all these clones, Sequential would not have released a rev 2. www.synthtopia.com/content/2020/09/17/behringer-teases-600-sequential-circuits-prophet-synthesizer-knockoff-the-pro-800/
Mmmm. I notice this guy has the vintage knob around 2. That’s the one I wanted originally but couldn’t find in great condition. I know what you’re saying but old gear still edges it...I think....
@@RMWBarton As a Prophet-5 Owner u know how massive and clean the same time it Sounds, especially when playing the first 2 octaves. Its like a Monster breaths and jumps into your face...i dont know it i would regret selling mine but this rev4 really catched my attention. Damn.... :D
@@AndyDufresne86 I would wait. I have a 2.0 and 3.3. There's something about the originals that sounds more magical to my ears. Maybe get one and compare...then decide which to keep.
First time Ive seen this apparently perfect remake of Prophet 5. Boy, I don't think I could ask for more. Looks, sounds unbeatable. Coolest instrument ever in my book. Like a candyland of classic analog sounds and effects and beyond. Done deal.
I've dreamed for years of owning a Prophet 5, and now I cannot believe I can buy a new one!!!! And maybe even a Prophet 10!!!! That's the goodest news I've been reading in 2020.
I own a Sub 37 and been looking for a polyphonic synth. I saw Moog dropped the new MUSE which sounds amazing on demos. I was also considering a P6 or Trigon. Would the P5 still be your pick 3 years later. To my ears this sounds much warmer than P6.
Thank you! I agree, the extra octave really changes things. I wish the P6 and OB6 had options for a 5 octave keyboard. It would change my relationship to those instruments.
That plucky melody at 11:47 is hauntingly beautiful, this is the synth to listen to for hours, the sound is huge, gentle, haunting, useful, brilliant, man it's whatever you want ! !
I almost laughed out loud on the 411 example. "Here, THIS dial, I'll turn THIS dial. Then, a little more. Then, a little more. THEN a lot more! Awesome!"
Well I just ... finally... learned how to do the Cars (Gary Numan) string sound whilst doing it justice on my P5 thanks to you - well done you and shame on me (not as simple as I thought and I've been playing for many decades) lol :). BIG THANKS!
I'll be getting the Prophet-10, due out the first part of 2021 (the ETA according to Sweetwater). I'm in line! Awww, I love your puppy at the end of the video!!!
This is rather incredible. I own a few Sequential synths and this is by far their best effort to date. It's the first modern synth that sounds like a vintage analogue (that I've heard anyway). And the price is soooooooo reasonable. I might have to snag it just on those grounds alone. This from a Rev 2 Prophet owner as well :).
Not having a go and I'm obviously in a pretty small minority but they seem wildly over priced to me. For $1400 you can get a 16 voice Prologue that is pretty similar in terms of spec, paucity of LFOs and modulation possibilities included. You're looking at $4.2k for the 10 voice Prophet. Prologue misses out on aftertouch on the keybed (a $100 expression pedal gets you there mind you - it does respond to aftertouch) but picks up effects and the user programmable 3rd oscillator and effects. I realise it's "not a Prophet" - but is the sound of any Prophet that spectacularly different? It feels to me like if these synths had any other manufacturer's logo on them, there would be a very different response.
@@bcm70 Fair dues. I have a rev2 Prophet 5, original, and this kind of nails that sound pretty good. To some that alone will be worth the price premium. The Fatar keyboard is nicer than the Prologue as well. The Prologue has versatility at the oscillator level and the Prophet has a bit more at the filter (I think they said all three filters were included). The Prophet doesnt' have as much scope in terms of sound design but that's probably not the point anyway. It sounds like the originals and that's the main selling point. The comparison to the Prologue should probably start and end there. If you like the way the Prologue sounds the answer is clear.
@@bcm70 The prologue was on my potential list in getting back into hardware synth along with DSI rev 2. I was also looking at the deepmind as cheaper option. But going to hold and wait for beringher ubxa. The re-release of prophet 5 sounds good but pricey.
@@bcm70 Just a short addendum to this. I recently discovered that the Prologue doesn't actually have a true analogue signal path. The outputs are essentially post-conversion (DAC). Which is kind of weird since you can't ever hear it in analogue this way. I don't know why they did this but it appears that they did. There is no bypass so before you get to the main outputs the signal has been converted to digital then back to analogue again. Strange decision but I came across this comment this morning and thought I'd let you know. Cheers.
What a great time for synthesizers! We have the Minimoog, the Fairlight , the ARP Odyssey and now the Prophet 5! This decade will be of synths as long as they don’t ruin good music
You know, this is actually a serious conundrum of Prophet 5 vs Prophet 6. It's really not so simple... the Prophet 6 has the vibe of the P5 but uses fully discrete circuits (technically the first synth Dave makes with a fully discrete VCO/VCF). Technically making the P6 "superior" for the 'purists'. It ticks every box (amazing analog distortion, DISCRETE VCO and VCF, sub oscillator, and a very nice FX section that lets you recall patches + their FX values. Whereas the Prophet 5 Rev 4 is a replica of the originals, but in the modern format/quality. It's NOT a discrete analog synth, it uses the same ICs as the originals. If the roles were reversed, it would be no trouble deciding between them - the purists would agree "I prefer the original with the discrete circuitry over the modern, IC one"... but in this case it's flipped around. The p6 is the discrete synth. Also, the Prophet 6, though not sounding identical to the P5, has a really gorgeous tone to it and yet another discrete filter (HPF) which makes it even more powerful for sound design use. Dave played his cards right. Everything in his product line is good and worth getting.
I've had a prophet 6 and an OB-6. This sounds better, discreet or not. Prophet 6 was kinda dull to me. A modern 'discreet synth' is necessarily the same as a discreet synth from 1980 (i.e the Korg Polysix sounded WAY better/more organic next to my Prophet 6 - both discreet. Korg Prologue 16 sounded better than my Prophet 6... Discreet again. I'm not a massive fan of "curtis chips" but this P5 just sounds great regardless of what it's doing in a way the P6 didn't.
There is a difference between precision SMT discrete and 40 year old through hole sloppy tolerances discrete. The P6 sounds fantastic but this has that extra fizz of vintage
@@syntheticmoment9994 I just mean that the Prophet 6 is designed to be a pristine example of Dave's work - rather than depending on a chip, he designed out a whole discrete circuit for each voice. (It's funny how sloppy circuitry is a desirable thing for synthesizers.)
@@SpacehotelMusic I'm looking forward to comparing them. I'll have both in the same room soon, so I'm curious how the Prophet 5 vs Prophet 6 will go. :)
I have never preordered anything in my life.. until I seen this announced. You bet your bottom dollar I’ll put myself in debt for six months for this beauty. I think my Minimoog will be a bit jealous though 😉
If I get this I think it'll have to be the 10. By the way, rumour has it Uli Behringer is now in a German hospital having heart attack treatment after this announcement
@@payt01 maybe in 5 years they will release 20 new synths at once :D Anyway, I will never accept a Eurorack or 4-octave crappy instrument so I will end up with a REV 4 someday
This is awesome. I hope it's not some limited edition and that it will be available for a while because there's no way I can come up with that much money before they go out of production. I just put that much into my retirement last month for this year. If only I had known earlier. :'(
I can't resist 411 at the start. That reminds me of that guy's great P5 Rev2 video from years ago. I notice that my favourite sounds on here except Numan are on the SSM filter.
I will own one of these one day....might be a long time from now, but I will 100% own one of these....This sound absolutely beautiful....Great job on the sounds in the video.
