I had Serato DJ Pro crash on a gig last week. Here are some things you can do to prevent a total catastrophe. People have asked about USB Cables. Check out Mojaxx from DJ City's review of Chroma Cables. • Review: DJ TechTools C...
My whole laptop crashed at a birthday party gig 3 days ago 😅 Hopped on the mic and literally was banging a table, holding a beat, and just singing popular choruses, keeping the crowd singing until it restarted. 👍My whole right hand was absolutely trashed by the time I got it back up from slamming the table so hard lol, but i was kinda proud of myself for managing to keep the energy up and the crowd engaged even with no music 😭
You nailed it! Using a good USB cable with a static bubble built into the cable is a must $30 but so what! Pay the $30 so you don't have to worry. A cheap USB will also make one deck, one side freeze up while the other side will play perfectly. If this is happening to you start with that USB cable. I learned the hard way but I've always have had a backup MacBook Pro plugged in and a jam (119 BPM there bout) ready to go at all times.
MasterP DJ did change usb it worked well for a few then it did it again. Went through system and deleted the old serato after the update everything been ok so far
@@thecapothedon If it does it again it's the cable. I replaced my cable twice and I thought problem solved for a few weeks but I was wrong as it happen again but once I got the cable with static bubble it hasn't happen again in 6 months. Good luck to you cuz that's not a good feeling while doing a gig
@@thecapothedon check and see if you are running effects echo out or echo break because that effect will be on a channel and kill the audio and have you guessing what's wrong.
The skit at 2:00 was very creative and had me dying laughing!!! Loved it!!! LOL ... But yeah, you're right about being prepared and having a backup always plugged in and ready to go. I use my Tablet for that. It did save my butt one time.
DJ 2LEGIT I found it to be hilarious as well. I had just came across him yesterday on the VDJ forums then Bam!!! I see this. I have zero choice but to subscribe now.
We run the DDJ-SZ2 with Alienware i7 (overkill) but always a second laptop, the Alienware i5 4k all loaded and ready to go plus a must is old faithful CDJ 1000Mk3 on pause. Our main gripe is Serato video crashes quite often , for some reason we suddenly get multiple ffdshow opening and nearly as many splitters opening up! failing everything my colleague sings which is not a pretty sight! Great videos, keep up the good work
And I thought I was the only DJ doing clone videos lol. Love the Skit and thanks for the tip. Recommendations for USB cord brands would be highly appreciated.
I always carry extra cables of everything in my DJ bag. Plus an extra 13-inch MacBook pro. Not to mention a flash drive full of crates. And the added benefit of the mcx8000 Denon stand-alone controller.
Lol... nice vdj intermission... But this happened to me also in my early days of getting to know serato. As time went on i saw the lag more and more and then i came to realize serato was using more of the computer resources in comparison to vdj. I had 2 crashes from serato while none from my use of vdj (thus far- which is a few yrs). This is 1 of the main reasons i stuck with vdj. Good advice on the possibility of a crash. Always be prepared cuz i know it can hapn to anyone.
I was doing a wedding and my virtual dj froze up on me. And I had to reboot my laptop just like you did several times. I've always kept my turntable qued up with wax incase I have an issue and I can fade over to it, I use a pre-mixed boot legged mix-it single, radio DJ's used in the late 80's. I still have several of them. They had a ton of songs on them and they sold then for about 30 dollars a pop!! I also played a middle school and the same thing happened again. We took my iPhone and I did not have the jack you mentioned so I took my cordless mike and pulled my iTunes account up and played the rest of the night thru that. In a pinch it worked. I buy my music thru iTunes so it was easy to pull it up and search out songs the kids wanted to hear just like using Serato or Virtual DJ. I will get the RCA to plug from now on. Thanks for the info.
My boy had similar issues, but he was using chroma cables. He thought one of his USB cables was going bad, so I tried my cable, and it still had the same issue with the different cable and different laptop. The only common denominator between all the setups we had, was the S9 mixer. It looked like it was the B source, but he uses A on his solo nights, and it was still an issue.
Another good back up I use is to set the computers audio output to the sound card of the mixer. When I get a software issues or a crash of my DJ software it’s very rare for my whole computer to crash. At this point I just task over to iTunes/Spotify and hit play. This is a lot faster than messing around trying to get a phone up and running while you restart the DJ software. Or a great buffer to do so if you need to restart the OS. You have the same tracks you play with and you don’t need a internet connection. For the people that don’t keep music on their phones and stream.
This isn’t recommended for a few reasons. First, his issue was cable. You would not be able to play sound from the laptop if the cable fails. Second, if you have to reboot to recover your DJ application, you’re not going to be able to play music from that same laptop. Third, you may have other OS sounds play when you don’t want them to. Fourth, some audio devices will not work properly in real time if they are not under exclusive use from the DJ application. I would always recommend having a backup computer and a backup audio source. If needed I could go directly from my iPad to my active speaker. This means if the controller, laptop, mixer, whatever fails, there is still music.
Had this happen last year at a school dance. For me, my Mac had a logic board issue and overheated. Guess I was cutting it up too hard. I was able to recover by using (don't judge) Amazon Music so I could reboot the machine and add a fan. Got lucky but it threw off my flow. I totally hear you CTB.
Bad USB cables could be an issue for some so I’m happy you were able to determine the problem. However, there could be a number of other reasons computers crash. It’s highly recommended that users check out Serato’s support page for ways to optimize their computers. Serato’s recommendations could be applied for any DJ related software.
Absolutely. As for cables, I used to tell DJs that musicians always had it on lock. Like guitarists, you should always grab good cables. Why connect your gear with dental floss? You wouldn't. Spend the money on cables. It's the lesson that you shouldn't have to learn the hard way. And when you do, you'll never make that mistake again.
Thanks so much...u helped me stay calm... and helped me find my problem..it happened to me.. Saturday... very I'm embarrassing.but my little mp3 player helped till I rebooted.
Serato decided to crash at the end of the night, and it was a file issues "AFTER" analyzed all files.. It decided to put a lighting bolt of the file I was about to play which caused Serato to freeze... While still playing the file that was already going.. Everything was still playing fine and even the video was playing fine but the program froze and once the song ended that was it.. Why can't serato find bad files when they are analyzed but finds them when I drag the track over to the player????
I’m having a problem with opening a streaming service and losing my music from my local crates that are running from my external hard drive. Is it safe to say never use a streaming service like Tidal while using my local file crates?
Plugging a line source into a mic input isn't a great idea. Firstly mics output a very small signal - feeding line level in could cause distortion. Second, mic inputs are mono. Depending on what you're playing, you could lose some of your audio. Aux in is the way to go.
Thanks for the in depth.... I have had one channel to freeze on me. It's is the worst... Almost... I have also has that back up to fail.. Rca to 1/4 inch hooked to the phone but no sound... I'm almost positive it's the cable ... I will be prepared next time.
I experienced a crash during a gig. Fortunately Serato restarted quickly and I was able to continue. It was one of my first times using the software. Only backup was to put a disc in the CDJ (that's how long ago this was). I think the crash was caused by a lack of available memory on my Windows laptop. One suggestion was to not have any other apps running (like a web browser) while using Serato. Since using a controller, I haven't had a crash during a gig, but I have had it crash at home. I think it was again due to the lack of available memory for the app. I play around with the settings to find the right balance (the 5ms setting doesn't seem to work for me), but in the meantime, I try to monitor the memory limit indicator.
This is why I stopped using Laptops for gigs, especially when playing back HD music videos. I now use a custom built computer with a ATI Radeon performance grphics card with USB 3.0 ports which helps out the reliability a lot. I also installed a Sound BlasterX AE-5 sound card and set my software to play back through it. Laptops are starting to lag behind the software these days. The more power and resources you have on your computer the better.
I had similar issue once. It was caused by loose contcts between USB port and cable. Since then, I occasionaly rock USB in port a little bit before set, to see if it loses connection
Something happened to me this weekend... using new controller for first time at a party... hit backloop... started playing hole song in reverse... lucky I have phone plugged in.....one song and a restart later..... all fine...lucky I always have something else plugged in.
My ASUS shut down twice during two songs....figured out that it was the harddrive plugged into the USB drive was possibly causing it to freeze. During the crash I had to quickly trouble shoot the problem and found it to be just easier to get rid of the external hard drive. I used a basic extra phone to plug in some music for about 2 songs. After the reboot and visual ok without the laptop shutting down I had to go hard into bring the dance floor back! Absolutely killed it but I was upset about the freeze! My managers was like you need to double check everything next time...which infuriated me because they don't understand this is why I need to test equipment before my actual gigs. But yeah i hear ya and it's good info! Never had a major issue like this again....
Hey Cleveland, that happened to me also. I'm a mobile DJ and was doing an anniversary party using my Denon MCX8000 and Serato. Early in the gig, my left deck begin playing backwards!! Fortunately, the 8000 also plays stand alone using USB drives. I switched to USB and realized it was the USB cable. I always carry extras to disaster avoided. Love your vids. Thx.
Usually if 1 deck reverses it's because you hit a shortcut key by mistake. It happened to me. Went to type in a song but the cursor wasn't in the search window. So it activated the reverse feature
Running ddj sz2 an its been glitching for about two weeks. So should I switch from a to b. Or just get a brand new cable from office depot. USB that plugs into the pioneer ddj pro? Oh an im running off of a envy x360 hp i5
My laptop crashed doing a gig in front of 650 people not a good feeling when you are experiencing this, it seems like an eternity waiting for you pc to come back to normal, will never forget that smfh

I am having the same problem. I use SX3 but i have no issues when I am playing at my club gigs using the same controller even plugging into my power while paying a song triggers this. Could it be a power surge or ? I have tried turning off my wifi etc. I guess i will try the USB cable swap.
During a set Serato froze on me. Luckily I had my Prime go with already hooked and ready to go. The song that I was playing on Serato didn't stop despite the program freezing. When I did switch over to the Prime go there was no stoppage in the music. I was able to get Searto back up and running after a few minutes. I was told to always have a back up plan.
I don't know about other people but my practice sessions sometimes end with a mood killing Serato crash. It's not rare but I wouldn't bet money each time either. Tidal loads a portion of the track then blackness... Upon the next change it crashes. I'd give anything to be able to confidently trust this
I've had the same issue and I'm so lost. I've even tried loading another song in the deck but a complete fail. Also I re analyzed several tracks but seems that serato isn't detecting those corrupt files...meaning I never see a lighting bolt only says writing tags🤦🏾♀️
@@aniyafranklin3087 Serato decided to crash at the end of the night, and it was a file issues "AFTER" analyzed all files.. It would freeze still, so I decided to try the wav encoded file, and now it plays fine.. Why can't serato find bad files when they are analyzed but finds them when I drag the track over to the player in the middle of a gig, and why can't it correct the file after re encoding it, but have to change the format of the file????
The same thing happened two weeks ago with my SB and a friends SB2, Serato DJ Pro kept working but it wouldn't recognize any Midi signal. I switched to my cable, the original cable that came with my SB and no problems happened after that.
2 of my worst was when i started my set. none of my cue points showed up smh...and i wasnt able to restart the program because the place was full. i didnt want to kill the mood 2nd was my computer should off in the middle of my set lol.. after staying calm and trouble shooting. my power cord wasnt plugged in . sometimes it can be something simple but like you said.. GOTTA STAY CALM
so i work off two V7's that i sometimes link with my Rane 62, and years ago my serato had a period when it would crash on me either during practice or live in the club i Dj'd at. that or it would do the thing and play the music back really fast. It was embarrassing, id have to Restart serato and i try to get the club vibe back to where it was. i was getting boo'd. [Luckily i picked up the habit of having all types of aux adapter cables, from a fellow dj friend, for the ipod/phone trick]. After a couple weeks of uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and serato with no luck, it turned out the ethernet cable i used to link my two V7's together was bad on one of the link ends which was preventing signal from reaching the software properly . after i replaced it, it worked without problem. i always replace my link cables every two years or so and have spare usb's just in case. The DJ Life is stressful haha
Things happen on every job ...Dj or 9to5... Don't panic find the issue and do your best to work it out.. If anyone in the crowd has a problem just wish that there car breaks down on there way home.....
I always use a usb cable with a ferrite on it. It makes a difference. Without one it might work fine at home, but not in an area with lots of RF noise! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_bead
Ok sir am a Dj too my name is Dj KayReflex and I have been into this Dj for years now but thanks for the USB problem I had the same issue too but right now the problem am haven now is, when my USB goes off from laptop my serato will not disconnect and it’s stay like 10 to 15 minutes before disconnect 🤷♂️ and I don’t know what the problem is sir and I really need help on that or maybe when the club djm s9 goes of 🤷♂️ boom it’s happened just like that
Yes I just had this happen to me at a party and it took 20 mins for me to get everything back up and running. It was tragic and the people were like kids on candy. They were antsy and ready to get back to partying.
Not a club failure but a wedding failure. Plugged my equipment into an outlet that felt loose. Went to start Serato in it would not see my DDJ SX2. Changed cables, computer and nothing worked. Had to plug in my phone and do the introductions using a streaming service t o play the songs. I forgot to turn off notifications so that was interrupting the audio. Good thing my speakers had a mixer since I had my phone on one channel and the Mic on a different channel. During all of this I had unplugged the SX2 let it sit for half an hour and restarted and it worked and I did the rest of the wedding without further issues
I’ve been having issues at gigs where my console (Roland Dj 808) will just dropout the main audio randomly, but serato is still responsive to the controller (you can still play/cue songs, just no audio), and the Mic output still works, only fix is to turn it off and on, help?
Cleveland Terry Bowens I’ve got an early 2015 MacBook Pro with 8GB, I keep all my music on an external 2 TB hard drive. I’ve already exchanged the Roland for a new one but the problem consists (must be something with the computer)! Btw I don’t expect you to know exactly how to fix my problem, but I do really appreciate you reading this! Anyone other DJs ever have this issue?
yes things happen it happen to me once i use external hard drive i use a pc never had an issue. until one night i had the ttm57l what happend you ask? movable parts - my brother whom works for IBM like 32years at that time - explained To me the next day I picked up 5 hd it took 72 hrs at that time to make new copies. and i always have one (at that time) xtra with me. today ... no serato i use traktor to date .... but i have the 9 hard drives one at my mother's house. and i just moved to SSD it cost a bit more but much faster to transfer 1-1/2 hr. and reported to last 17,560 days . so keep on top of info and help a brother or sister out with this type or DJ INFO. thanks brother
One of the craziest DJ fails I had was doing a party for a frat at USC Halloween party I live in San Pedro the party was in downtown LA I forgot my hard drive this is when Serato just came out didn’t know that you could use internal music so I had my friend get the hard drive I had to load CDs through my hard drive do you know how long it takes to load a CD and to play maybe three songs out of the CD back to back everybody was dressed up at least 300 people , Sidenote we did a party for them a month earlier rocked it for like 100 bucks this time they gave us 300 but they already gave me the check before the party started they were pissed they demanded the check back I told him he would have to get it from my cold dead grip hands , lol , another thing is that I told one of the frat boys while I change CDs to speak on the mic and get the crowd hype ‘ all he said was” Wait for it ….. Go !!! USC …. And gave the mic back, It takes about 30 seconds to load a CD that’s forever in the DJ life world Then this girl actually bumped my table knocked my power out from my computer back in the days I was running a PC now it’s all day Mac but everything shut down I tried to blame everything on her she ruined the party she messed up my stuff you owe me money laid it on thick…. Was just really stalling for my friend to bring the hard drive which it took him about an hour then I got it then I was killing it but but they still wanted to check back they were complaining that everybody left there about 100 people left, Ended up just killing it but my friend that’s in the frat still gets shit about it … Lol Doesha
First sry for my bad english. Hey bro, my controller ddj sb2 freezes up at last party 3days ago, I'm using it for 2years and never had any problems.. but on this party basses and volume was too strong that my controller moves on the table, because of vibrations.. and at one moment controller just freezes up, NO SERATO BUT CONTROLLER, I just could not do anything.. so I reconnect usb cable and set volume little lower, and to the end of the party everything was fine. It can be possible that controller freezes up because of strong vibrations? Because laptop works perfectly, or maybe usb cable is the problem..
@@ClevelandTerry No, controller was connected but I can't do anything, even channels level freezes up, crossfader, everything.. I just can turn on effects but nothing to do with them.
Dang wish this video was made before hahaha good video though. Altho what i do, is i carry a second laptop and kid you not. I run VDJ on it hahaha. Since VDJ u could use straight of the laptop, i have a jack to rca conected from my 2nd laptop to my DDJ SX2 channel 3 or 4 and in case of any issue i hope right on the VDJ to simply mix couple songs until i get my main laptop going again.
I was having screen freezes on my 2017 MBP Touchbar but only in the club. I bought some expensive usb cables and it didn’t change anything. I found out that it was the lighting in the club messing with the sensors on my computer. I disabled the Touchbar lighting sensor and the problem went away. Now I can use any usb cable and I have no issues.
Yo thank you so much!!! My serato DJ keeps crashing on me and I don’t know why. I’ve updated the software. I’ve updated my operating System I’ve updated everything and analyzed my whole library and it still crashes on me.
My serato dj pro has been doing this same thing serato is pissing me off im going to switch to virtual if this happens 1 more time i cant be at a wedding or any gig and my system freeze up or stop its not professional at all and very embarrassing at the most.
I hate to say this but Serato DJ Pro has USB issues...It's crashed on me at least 5 times now... I've been trying to help HQ get it right with the Rane 68, I'm doubtful they will ever get the Flex FX sync fixed...
Interesting. You may be on to something, however Rane has legitimate issues with their hardware. I don’t know why it’s so hard for them to get their $#it together. Drivers are all screwed up.
I never had a Crash on Scratch Live ever... So basically it seems to me like they making the newer software way more flimsy at it's core... lol but we're all paying more for the hardware though...
So I have had an issue with my serato crashing almost everytime I start to play music. I generally do weddings so with that being said. I can crash say something move to my phone or iPad via aux cord. Reset the program and begin again. But recently I have been crashing more than once in a set!!!! I have not changed the USB cord out in forever. I will try this now and update if I have anymore issues. Side note I have changed external HD anylized all the tracks several times. Bought new computer while keeping it up to date at all times. None of those things seemed to work. Wait I have also Uninstalled program and re installed as well. Still crashing. I can almost always expect for it to crash with high gain levels meaning with more vibration happening around equipment. So I will change out cord smh never done that yet. Hopefully it works.
