Maria before that damn shoulder injury later that year, was one hell of a player. Just look at her shots here, it's crazy. She never reached this level again after her return. Although she did became a much2 better player on clay. Serena as always, was the woman to beat. Can't believe both women have retired. Pretty soon Venus too 😭. I am glad that Serena chose to retire now though. I feel like this is a great transition into a new era. Look out for Swiatek and potentially Gauff. They will be the future of womens tennis
Yet, she won 4 slams post shoulder surgery against 1 slam before that, statistics that show it's rather a poor excuse to say that her level dropped because of her post shoulder surgery. Serena had knee injuries, natably one towards the end of 2003, but never used it for an excuse after her losses. Injuries are part of every athlete's trials.
Despite how bad the commentators could be sometimes I miss when ESPN would air more matches throughout the year rather than just the majors. Made tennis feel more mainstream and like more of a big deal.
The song when Micheal Joyce talked to Sharapova before the third set was “ My Lovin’ (You Never Gonna Get It)” by En Vogue. That tournament threw some Easter egg shade lol.
@@dosensadif6585 I agree Maria was at a peak in early '08, had she kept it together, she couldve beaten Serena 6-3, 6-4 maybe, but Serena was always the better player, she always had solution against Maria whether she is at her best or not
the coach wanted to say "beat this black girl"and says he almost slipped up. well it serves him right that Maria is the weak link she is!!! BLACK IS POWER
@@dosensadif6585 So you know the operation of his mind? He could have said a host of ugly vile things hence his pause. It’s sickening the things that Serena (and Venus) endured. But they did it while making history.
She didn't beat this almost whatever he and the druggypova insinuated... most players played against the opponent but Serena played against a lot more without the help of drugs and favoritism.
