It's one of those dunks that doesn't really look that great at first, but on replay, you realize it's really impressive. Like Dwight Howard's 'sticker dunk'.
twobigjets so what if mj dribbled? its a fucking dunk contest, and besides...ibaka had a twisted ankle when he did this so of course he would fall on the landing
+Zach S Why does no one seem aware of the fact that MJ did a FT dunk in his first dunk contest in 1985 (his rookie season)? He did 3 dunk contests total - 1985, 1987, and 1988. He did a FT line dunk in ALL of them. In 87 and 88, he was slightly inside the FT line. But in 85, he took off from exactly where Serge takes off from here... not even a centimeter inside the line. And judging from the comments on this video, people AREN'T EVEN AWARE OF THIS. Lol. Pretty much every comment is like, "Oh MJ couldn't do a TRUE free throw line dunk like Ibaka, he took off in front of the line." It's like.... um, hello dumbasses.... are you just totally ignorant of the 1985 contest? What's going on here? Are people actually unaware of that contest?
Danilo Jovović thats the most nonsense comparison i've ever seen, arnold trained for bodybuilding, mj for basketball it's like comparing a tenis table player with a tae kwon do fighter, it makes no sense, try comparing guys that train for the same purpose at least.
@Just Some Kraken With Internet Access True, I also appreciate that dunk and performance from Javale. Btw, nah it would've been very nice-to-great if he actually did the most obvious quality choice from everyone and all the guys that had Blake Griffin-level of expectations (so the roof, I imagine and think there are many dunkers or even normal athletes that can do that, even though it never happened in the Dunk Contest unless sponsor came in like that case, so let alone if one of the best dunkers of the NBA and prime competitor in the NBA Dunk Contest doesn't do that... but then the sponsor and probably doubts and risk of health came in and screwed everything), a 49 or 50 considering both legit and then not legit/artificial and unfair reasons favoring Blake, but still nothing even begun like we all saw and instead he did poor things, that got extremely overrated and hyped at that, so a pretty trash outcome all-around (stacked on top of all the actual great snubs of dunkers and performances there) from Blake. What a disappointment.
A few NBA players have done the free throw line dunk, and they may have jumped a little further back than Jordan, but a lot of people forget that Jordan brought the ball back to his head and kinda double pumped it.
You guys are over rating the double pump . I guess can't dunk cause it's not a big deal... when you can dunk from far double pump the ball with one hand does not change anything the things that make you go further is your vertical and your speed so you can do a lot of things in mid air with that hand time so for me that's not an argument
While I miss athletic serge, I’m a bigger fan of what he’s become. Credit to him for aging gracefully and adapting/extending his range. Also, congrats to harden’s orthodontist.
What makes Jordan’s free throw line dunks so special is that he actually dribbled to the line and how high he was up in the air , along with how he palmed the ball and posed with it. #ComeFlyWithMe
No one will EVER do it better than Jordan. Every free throw dunk i watch, no matter how tall the player, you can tell they are stretching their body's to the max just to barely make the dunk. When MJ did it, the man fucking flexed his ball arm, arched his legs and fucking posed in mid-air as he effortlessly glided to the rim... not to mention he actually dribbled the ball. It was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen.
Funny, people are so offended when anyone surpasses Jordan. If someone did the exact same dunk as Jordan today including, flexing their ball arm or whatever, people would still try to find some bullshit about how Jordan's was better. Give credit where credit is due, Ibaka's dunk was over a foot farther
Frank Mel But Jordan did it with such finesse. Then consider that his name in Hebrew literally means: ONE LIKE GOD WHO DESCENDED, and his supremacy is confirmed/validated. Michael Jordan=basketball god.
Frank Mel This dunk just wasn't that impressive when someone has already done it a lot better. Jordan did this dunk twice, the better one was when he did, yes step on the free throw line, but this guy is not a foot further out, maybe 6 inches. Considering he's got about 5 inches on Jordan, still not impressed. I'm not saying Jordan does absolutely everything better than anyone else, i'm just saying his free throw dunk will most likely never be topped. Problem?
One of the reasons why it is not talked about much is the fact that he was able to do it so effortlessly. I can't believe how he did that something which nobody has ever done so far
Good dunk, and yes he was behind the line. An inch farther than Jordan's. But Jordan is shorter, he dribbled, and he looked smoother with the leg kick-out thing.
go watch Jordan again, not the one in chicago, but the first time, the one where he was wearing a gold chain, MJ was behind the line. Reggie Miller was lying.
Jordan did it four times his first two times he actually dunk from the free throw line his last two was over the line! But Ibaka dunk is very underrated cause to many cant say they actually dunk from the free throw line!
actually, the first dunk jordan did (1985) from the free throw line was behind the line. That dunk is almost never shown. Also, in 1990, during the magic Johnson's summer night classic, jordan dunked from behind the line as well. In that case, he opened his legs like the jumpman logo. In addition, in the the 1988's dunk (not the 1987), jordan's head was at the same level of the rim (no one has EVER replicated that from the free throw), pumped the ball, dribbled, styled it, and leg kicked. People just do not know how hard it is to dribble and dunk from the free throw line. Do wonder why no one has EVER replicated that either. This is at 6.6, but his real height is closer to 6.5". Also note that his wingspan is average compared to someone like pippen and 7 footers who have to reach and extend in order to make it. Jordan's dunk is purely on leaping abilities and it has many attributes that makes it iconic.
Actually, i made one mistake. Pippen did dribble when he dunked from the free throw line. However, he stepped on the line. Personally, i do not really care that much about stepping on the line. It is really hard to measure your steps with pinpoint accuracy. But that's.just me. What's funny about his dunk is that, for a millisecond, you can see him try to pump the ball but realized it was flat out impossible as he barely made it. His is a dunk that is mostly purely accomplished via extension provided by his size and crazy wingspan. Regardless, it is a nice dunk by him in my opinion; not great. And I think the crowd thought so too. They were virtually silent. A dunk like that one is just not as exciting from a tall long guy so they must have thought it nice, but not great.
Silvio Neris yeah but lavine windmilled and betweened the legs from the same spot mike did yall just dont wanna admit lavine shit on mjs head dunk contest wise 😂😂😂
Guys stop saying jordan floated cameras back then had a slower frame rate than cameras now! Plus jordan did not dunk from the line he was in fact 2inches in front of it. Ibaka literally jumped from the line. One of the most under appreciated dunks of all time right here 😔😔
Props to Ibaka, that’s awesome for a big man. As far as free-throw lone dunks go, Jordan was untouchable. He did it off the dribble and contorted his body in the air in a display of aerial artistry only he could execute. Zach Lavine has done some unreal ones, too.
Michael Jordan jumped from behind the FT line (same spot as Ibaka) in the 1985 dunk contest, and did it while dribbling the ball and with more flair. His 1988 dunk - which he wasn't behind the FT line - is more shown/known though. So, most people here are wrong, and Reggie and Marv were wrong too. Julius Erving had a foot on the line but also cocked the ball back.
NIGGA WHAAT?? You're actually wrong! Mj put the tape down right at the line or a lil behind the line and stepped right on the tape! Mj is not longer than Ibaka hence Mj's dunk is more impressive! Plus Mj was dribbling the ball when he did it...
Wow! These Africans have GREAT physiques. Serge's body is impressive like Dwight Howard's. This is genetics setting athlete's apart. Some men just have wider shoulders, more muscular builds. Very impressive. Usain Bolt the runner has this build. Wow. Africa really is where everything started!
Slave trade made athletic slaves breed with other athletic slaves while un-athletic breed at all, its more selective breeding than anything else. Thats why black athletes are more frequent. Also dark skinned people in general usually possess fast twitch fibres more frequently than white people, however white people possess slow twitch fibres more often than Blacks.
Ekaj Luap I'm sure that's true but here in USA and in Jamaica blacks seem to be totally set-apart in ability in sportsl. Just look at the little tiny basketball players who can slam dunk. They're all black. And then I remember this outstanding Physics teacher I had who was black and able to explain complex concepts to class when British teacher (who he replaced) couldn't. There's something strange going on with blacks in AMERICA, the anagram: I AM RACE. What I've learned recently is that African-Americans are the Hebrews of the Bible and that Muammar Ghadafi referred to them as "THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK". He was talking about the Bible and its people the Hebrews. Wow.
Wow, he stretched out totally and was half a foot more in than MJ. Problem is, MJ didn't just stretch out, he cocked the ball to the side of his head with ease. Had MJ really cared enough he could easily jump exactly from the free throw line much more impressive than this.
