Listened to this work many times on CD, but it's not until you actually see it being played that you realise how much physical energy it requires. A fine performance by these two musicians.
I played the first movement of this as part of my auditions for music college. It has been many years since then and I don't play anymore, but hearing this still fills me with all the emotions and passion that I felt when I played it.
As a tennis player, I must say I'm confused by your analogy, but nonetheless appreciate your attempt to compare the greatest sport on this planet with Prokofiev and Sol Gabetta's playing.
Just the best Prokofiev Cello Sonata ever, Polina's Piano tones are rich, powerful and extremely Sensitive all at once and such a perfect match for Sol's powerful, rich and inventive Cello playing wow! I hope this performance gets released sometime very soon for HiRes download or as CD.. please
When you think of all that Prokofiev has lived through and must express, I can't think of any other cellist who can bring out these feelings as fully as Sol Gabetta. All compliments to Polina Leschenko to keep up with her. Wonderful performance by the two of them.
This was an enormously terrific performance by Sol Gabetta, whom I expected such a level of fantastic playing from and Polina Leschenko, a terrific pianist whom I am thrilled to meet. I knew I'd enjoy this because I love Prokofiev's immense creativity.
Hey there, I may have commented before. Now that 1 of my cellists are working on this greater appreciation of a top flight performance and congrats, ladies! Stunning show! WOW!
Sometimes, when my ears are assailed by a particularly ugly bit of cacophony over a public speaker, I despair for the future of music. But then I hear a radiant performance like this from such talented artists, and my hope is amply restored. Many thanks for this and all your wonderful posts.
A sonata I didn't know. So joyful and lyric - in line with the ballets and other theater pieces. (I can't figure out why the piano sonatas are so strident. I never listen to them.) Great cellist and equally great pianist.
I feel like the page-turner is the Western classical music equivalent of the tamboura player in North Indian classical music. Their main job is to be invisible in plain sight. Excellent job, page-turner! I hardly noticed you were there, and when I did, it was the camera's fault, not yours.
Nothing like being completely into an outstanding performance for it to be suddenly interrupted by ads for Walt Disney and Mountain Dew. RU-vid is full of cancer. Advertising is the scourge of society.
A very intense and lyrical rendition by Sol Gabetta, indeed a great cellist. As for the sonata itself, it is beautiful indeed, but the style is less sharp than in his Pariis works. Personally I regret it somehow.
1st movement. Good. Normal. 2nd movement. Interesting for cellists no doubt but I'm not one and I always used to switch off a bit. Not this timr. though. Fast. Exuberant. Wonderful. 3rd movement I'm not bothered how this excellent movement is played. Here it's fast. That's fine. Very nice. The performance is the best I've ever heard of this work. Two wonderful musicians.
Try explaining Monet to someone who is color blind, or reciting poetry to someone who does not understand the language. Or pouring a gallon of water into a teacup.
Superbe violoncelliste, superbe musicienne! Par contre je ne reconnais pas la sonate (!!) Quelle est cette nouvelle édition avec des tempi complètement exacerbés, et des phrasés.... pour le moins étonnant? C'est bien d'interpréter, mais attention à la caricature!
I know that this two women are very good playing their respective instruments, but sorry, the only word it comes to me when I hear them playing this piece is "chaos". Ritmically very caprichious, too rustic (when the cello plays the pizzicati I hear only noise) and a very unpleasant cello sound, rigid and pressed (easy to see the muscles of Ms. Gabetta very tense). It seems also that they didn't rehearse enough together the piece. Sorry, not good for me.
the connection between piano and cello is quite unprepared, but great individual work. i think intense is just her style tbh, and i have mixed opinions about that.
