This was a golden time.I was a young teen but I really appreciated the beauty of this gorgeous music. It lifts the spirits. In our trouble filled world we can know that people don't just destroy. They create beautiful art. Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 created a bit of heaven.
I would extend that appreciation to the entire Bossa Nova phenomenon. This was also the time of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto (plus his singer wife Astrud, who became internationally famous singing "The Girl from Ipanema."
Hey Becky, the first time I heard sergio mendes...I was six. My father was driving on the van Wyck expressway with me in the back seat listening to 93 WPAT and one of their songs came on. From that day on I was hooked and I mean hooked. At six you can imagine the kind of heckling I received from my friends. I didn't care. I've been in love with sergio and bossa nova in general ever since, and that was 1968. At 60 now and still can't get enough of it. You my dear have great taste in music. Peace and love.
Why does Lani get all the "credit" and all the fame, when Janis and her are always singing together simultaneously. I find it very hard to distinguish between the two voices when they perform, and ... there are not any "vocal solos" going on -- it is always them as a duet together.
I only discovered that last October. First saw her face in the Come What May music video this year. Loved her voice, found her pretty and loved that she had a sense of humor too. Looked her up in Wikipedia and wow... Never knew she was one of the driving force for Brasil 66 that I've listened too growing up. Fell in love her more.
The girls have such a heavenly voice. Pretty and sexy too. And the rhythm is so catchy. Wonderful adaption of the song from the Umbrellas of Cherbough. Love this much, despite the years...
Fabulous! My Dad introduced me to Sergio Mendez & Brasil 66 when I was a child and I love them still. Rest In Peace, Dad. Frank Jones December 17, 1935 - November 15, 2019.
FROM SPAIN...love Sergio Méndez,MUSIC .....my name is Sergio too LOLOL GREETINGS FROM SPAIN...sorry about YOUR dad...really he was a very good taste of mood with music specially... listenin Sergio Méndez... greetings!
Lani and Janis deserve a very unique special place in music history. The dual effect of the voices merging into that Whole Sound that was the signature of these many incredible Brasil 66 songs (there are approximately 24! of these scintillatingly shiny, glossy, elegant songs recorded).
Absolutely superb ... takes me right back to when I was a young woman, and the world was a kind, intelligent, beautiful place. Thank you very much indeed.
Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 is the most beautiful and purist form of music and vocals ever!!!!!! Lani Hall has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard spanning the 60s to 2022!!!!!!! The keyboards, rhythm, and vocals are superb beyond comparison!!!!!!!!
Why does Lani get all the "credit" and all the fame, when Janis and her are always singing together simultaneously. I find it very hard to distinguish between the two voices when they perform, and ... there are not any "vocal solos" going on -- it is always them as a duet together.
@@snugglethorn No, Wanda Sa was part of Brasil'65. The only Brasilian female vocalist who sang for Brasil'66 was Bibi Vogel who teamed with Lani Hall for live performances in1966 and were replaced by Janis Hansen
The sound of their layered voices just gorgeous. Both singers simultaneously singing the lyrics with expert precision combining so exactly. The combining of their voices into that ultra memorable single sound.
@ It's Janis singing solo at 1:45 into the video. At the start of the song, I'm not sure anybody really knows. I've heard it's Lani Hall multi-tracked, I've heard it's both Lani and Janis, I've heard it's Lani and another woman but not Janis, and every other permutation.
@limeyleafsfan Janis Hansen actually did the solo lead vocal parts on The Look Of Love, which was on their next album Look Around and became their biggest single. Ironically, and unfortunately, by the time it was a radio hit she was out of the group - Mendes dismissed the entire original lineup after that album to form a brand new band, although Lani Hall ultimately returned to continue as the primary lead vocalist (I believe at Herb Alpert's request).
@limeyleafsfan Actually I just discovered the existence of an album recorded in 1969 by a group called the Carnival, which was a vocal quartet formed by Janis Hansen and fellow ex-Brasil '66 member José Soares, who is the percussionist in this video. Despite being produced by Bones Howe, who was a heavy-hitter at the time, and having A-list session musicians playing on it, the album didn't do well and the group disbanded without recording a follow-up. Some of their songs are on RU-vid - here's one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yUrTIVZup2I.html I really like their sound - sort of Brasil' 66-Meets-The-Fifth-Dimension, leaning a little more toward the latter. I'd love to get the CD but it seems like it's very hard to find now. I believe Hansen subsequently married and left the music business but eventually returned to doing music projects for herself. Sadly she passed away in 2017. You can find out more if you Google her, but beware: there is also an actress named Janis Hansen who was on the Odd Couple TV show in the 1970's, who is not the same person. :)
These girls sang as one. Musical perfection. Musical genius, is the sound of Sergio Mendez and Brazil ‘66. Sergio, like Stevie, was born with the happiness gene. Just an amazing assemblage of artists.
Very clever Sergio ! Not the most handsome guy on the block - but surround yourself with real class ladies and hey presto BINGO ! A typical Aquarian ploy . But you know I am glad u did it because it works wonders for my well being and hopefully everyone who sees/hears your music is taken to that special place where only music can take you.
I prefer this lineup. I know the story of why Sergio (I call him Sergio) fired everybody except Lani Hall. Seems severe. Oh well, the following lineup kicked ass too. Just not as well as Janis Hansen and the rest here did.
@@studenttime1650 Sergio was known for staying in luxury hotels and made the rest stay in the equivalent of Motel 6. So, they decided to confront him. He fired them all or they all resigned. Lani, soon after, asked for her job back., Supposedly that was at the urging of her soon-to-be husband, Herb Alpert.
Lyrics Let someone start believing in you Let him hold out his hand Let him touch you and watch what happens When someone who can look in your eyes And see into your heart Let him find you and watch what happens Cold No, I won't believe your heart is cold Maybe just afraid to be broken again Let someone with a deep love to give Give that deep love to you And what magic you'll see Let someone give his heart Someone who cares like me Let someone give his heart Cold No, I won't believe your heart is cold Maybe just afraid to be broken again Let someone with a deep love to give Give that deep love to you And what magic you'll see Let someone give his heart Someone who cares like me Let someone give his heart Someone who cares like me Someone who cares like me Someone who cares like me Someone who cares like me ... Songwriters: Norman Gimbel / Michel Jean Legrand / Jacques Demy
i'm only repeating, i guess, what others have said. but these lyrics MEAN something; they invite someone to trust and love. keep your 2020 music with foul, reverse-racist lyrics and demeaning words fit only for animals. i know i can't go back to '66. but sure as hell i can--and do--go back to Brasil 66. come join me.
@@wildforthecats661 Her uniqueness is that she didn't go over the top and was anchored to the group ......no ego. Yet she probably didn't realize how her subtleties contributed so much to their success.
Classic.!!! The fabulous music of Sergio Mendes will stay with till the end... and I'm STILL trying to play it finger style on guitar though been playing rock and roll and blues plectrum style since around 1965.!!! Best wishes from Plymouth UK.!!
I do wish so many of Brasil 66's TV appearances were NOT lip-synched, tho.....this one of course was....canned completely, except perhaps for piano and drums maybe
That is because, at the time, the custom was to lip synch. The 1960's television technology would have made it difficult to do it live. Plus, the theory was the artists wanted to plug the record so why not sound (exactly) like the record? One major exception was the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in '64.
I always loved her voice and wondered how she learned to sing in Portuguese. This group started my lifelong love of the Portuguese language and bossa nova. I went on to teach myself how to speak Portuguese.
No, Sergio fired the entire group, American Janis Jansen and bassist BobMatthews, Brasilian Jose Soares and ace-drummer Joao Palma with the exception of Lani Hall, who later became Mrs Herb Alpert, co- founder of A&M record label for which this group cut 3 LPs
This version with Janis and Lani was better than the later version. Sergio fired everyone in the late 1960s, only Lani returned at Herb’s insistence. The two women’s voices were so close it was hard to tell which of them was singing. Mark II of the group with seven members were not as appealing and ended in late 1960s.
These ladies voices were soooooo heavenly, so sweet........ and the bossa nova rhythms are so catchy and cool. And the song from Umbrellas of Cherbough is a favourite. Love it!
Lol José Soares(playing the shaker) is rightfully placed on his own platform. In other videos, he is with the girls and, at times, will upstage them - not good. Hold on, at the end of this video, he managed to upstage Sergio. Hahaha
