Gary Leon Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer, is an American serial killer. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders. As part of his plea bargain, another conviction was added, bringing the total number of convictions to 49, making him the second most prolific serial killer in United States history according to confirmed murders. He killed many teenage girls and women in the state of Washington during the 1980s and 1990s.

"The task force investigators believed that there were probably more bodies to be found in that area, so they decided to conduct a search with the assistance of a team of teenaged Explorer Boy Scouts." Wtf? They realistically expected to find more bodies, & their go to idea was: "Let’s utilise a group of young teens, with the possibility they might discover victims' violated corpses, potentially mentally scaring them for life!"

In 1987 I wrote up a rough semi-investigative paper about the Green River Killer. At the time I wrote it I was living in Ballard Seattle, Whittier Heights. The very same week I wrote about GRK several more body’s were found localized in what would become known as a ‘ primary body dump’. Gary continued killing women for over a decade after I wrote that paper. In fact it was closer to two decades...

I understand your feeling - it sounds like they are assigning them to the habit than rather the rest of their life. I think, from what I know of this case, the intent is to show the theme, psychological origin, and method of Ridgeway’s crimes. In the bio of Ted Bundy they consistently called hiss victims “students”. which is true but not the only defining slice the women. If you look at John Wayne Gacy’s case, his younger male victims are also narrowly defined. I do agree that there is no real way to describe this situation without it being unpleasant, and that’s unfortunate.

I was one of the Explorer volunteers and to this day I have never discussed what was or wasn’t found in our searches. I also believe that Ridgeway approached me as I was the point on a line a search (I was the one on the road while everyone else was in the trees and bramble), but who knows. After all these years some memories aren’t very reliable. I also have connections in my family to Ted Buddy. My memories of him were of us scaring each other to run home at night yelling, “hurry or Ted will get you!” My sister met him at the beach where he sat with her and her girlfriend (who was his type) and my Mom worked at the crisis pre enticing center with Ann. Thank you so much for sharing this video. I had never heard about the family of Melvar following ridgeway’s car (not once but twice!!) and finding his home address and telling the cops etc etc. How many people died following that moment? The vehicle description matched his, the pock marked face matched his...it’s just incredible. Thank you again for this, much appreciated.🐿 P.s it’s fascinating that, as part of the FBI profile, they suggested that the killer may have an interest in law enforcement, with ridgeway actually applying and failing to join the police services. I also wouldn’t be at all surprised if quite a few killers got away with murder when their crimes were wrongly attributed to the green river killer....possibly.

When he did speak he had issues with staying on track and would get confused. Dad said when he was caught, my dad asked the detectives why they had never asked questions during the very numerous times he was implicated of rape and murder. Dad knew him all during this time period. But was never interviewed. Dad said by the time they asked any of his co workers, none of them could remember anything about these specific days. Crazy

I put this on the chat but I thought I would put it here too. I don't know do they post the same way? IDK but anyway. If you are interested in GR I recommend the book "Defending Gary." It's written by the defense attorney for the case. It has a different perspective. I know someone who went to school with him. She said he seemed like just a normal guy. I live in the area where this happened. Recently a Jane Doe was identified as Wendy Stephens, she was 14. So sad. Women are not disposable objects. I always think about father, Robert Rule, who forgave GR in court. During the sentence hearing GR remained emotionless as each relative spoke. Then Robert Rule said he forgave him. GR cracked and cried.
